Targeting neurobehavioral substrates of effortful control to reduce childhood anxiety: The Camp Kidpower study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood anxiety affects up to 20% of preschoolers, with long-term implications including depression, substance abuse, and suicide. Despite some success with exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), many children retain clinically significant symptoms, highlighting the need for innovative interventions. This study integrates the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) and experimental medicine frameworks to target effortful control (EC)-the capacity to regulate attention and impulses-to reduce anxiety in young children through a novel intervention, Camp Kidpower. METHODS:

Response suppression and decision-making in association football referees.

Inhibitory control, a cornerstone of executive function, is hypothesized to play a pivotal role in sports decision-making by regulating information processing and behavioural control. This study explores association football referees' inhibitory control and decision-making across different levels of expertise. Utilizing the Stop-Signal Task (SST) to assess response suppression and a video-based decision-making task, we investigated whether higher-level referees would demonstrate superior performance in both domains. Participants included 24 football referees from the Spanish Football Federatio

Exploring predictors of comfort in palliative care among nursing students: A cross-sectional analysis of knowledge, fear of death, and thanatophobia.

AIM: This study explored the predictors of comfort in providing palliative care among nursing students in Colombia, focusing on knowledge, fear of death, thanatophobia, and age. BACKGROUND: Providing quality palliative care requires nurses to feel prepared and emotionally equipped to support patients at the end of life. However, nursing students often report discomfort and fear when facing death and dying. Understanding the factors that influence their comfort is crucial for improving palliative care education. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was used with a sample of 355 nursing students i

Prospective Dysphagia Assessment in Adult Patients With Nephropathic Cystinosis.

INTRODUCTION: Myopathy and dysphagia are common manifestations of nephropathic cystinosis, a rare autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder. We previously demonstrated that both the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing are affected and impact function and quality of life in patients. To better understand and characterize swallowing impairment, we evaluated patients with nephropathic cystinosis experiencing dysphagia and myopathy. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated patients who had participated in a prior clinical trial readiness study of myopathy and dysphagia, using functional outc

Scoping Review of Psychological Therapies in Acute Pain Relief-To Whom, From Who, and Which Channels.

PURPOSE: Chronic pain remains a worldwide burden. This prolonged pain arises from acute pain, especially prolonged postoperative pain. Although there are available psychosocial interventions, the investigation of these interventions in an acute health care setting is underrated. This study aimed to examine existing literature addressing the providers, recipients, and media of psychological interventions in acute pain management. DESIGN: A scoping review. METHODS: Five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase) were used via access from the University of Pecs, Un

Reimagining Physician Assistant Education: Championing Cognitive Diversity to Promote Inclusivity, Neurodiversity Awareness, and a Sense of Belonging.

Neurodiversity, encompassing conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and dyslexia, represents a significant and often under-recognized segment of the population, including within science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine fields like medicine. Neurodiverse individuals possess unique skills, including enhanced creativity, analytical thinking, and meticulous attention to detail, which are valuable in health care professions. However, failure to recognize and support these individuals can result in missed opportunities, social isolat

Identification and Verification of Error-Related Potentials Based on Cerebellar Targets.

The error-related potential (ErrP) is a weak explicit representation of the human brain for individual wrong behaviors. Previously, ErrP-related research usually focused on the design of automatic correction and the error correction mechanisms of high-risk pipeline-type judgment systems. Mounting evidence suggests that the cerebellum plays an important role in various cognitive processes. Thus, this study introduced cerebellar information to enhance the online classification effect of error-related potentials. We introduced cerebellar regional characteristics and improved discriminative canoni

Structural and functional features characterizing the brains of individuals with higher controllability of motor imagery.

Motor imagery is a higher-order cognitive brain function that mentally simulates movements without performing the actual physical one. Although motor imagery has attracted the interest of many researchers, and mental practice utilizing motor imagery has been widely used in sports training and post-stroke rehabilitation, neural bases that determine individual differences in motor imagery ability are not well understood. In this study, using controllability of motor imagery (CMI) test that can objectively evaluate individual ability to manipulate one's imaginary postures, we examined structural

Emotion dysregulation in youths with obsessive-compulsive disorder and its implication for treatment - An exploratory study from the TECTO trial: A protocol and statistical analysis plan.

BACKGROUND: Research on improving psychotherapy for youths with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), should explore what works for whom and how by examining baseline moderators and potential mechanisms of change. Emotion dysregulation is proposed as an intermediate therapy factor in a transdiagnostic framework. This study investigates emotion dysregulation as an outcome, mechanism, and moderator of psychotherapy in youths aged 8-17 years with OCD. METHODS: Data are from a randomized clinical trial and a parallel prospective study of healthy contro

The Granular Retrosplenial Cortex Is Necessary in Male Rats for Object-Location Associative Learning and Memory, But Not Spatial Working Memory or Visual Discrimination and Reversal, in the Touchscreen Operant Chamber.

The retrosplenial cortex (RSC) is a hub of diverse afferent and efferent projections thought to be involved in associative learning. RSC shows early pathology in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD), which impairs associative learning. To understand and develop therapies for diseases such as AD, animal models are essential. Given the importance of human RSC in object-location associative learning and the success of object-location associative paradigms in human studies and in the clinic, it would be of considerable value to establish a translational model of object-location l

Breaking barriers: addressing inequities in Alzheimer's disease diagnosis and treatment in Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease represents a substantial and escalating public health threat across Africa. Alzheimer's disease leads to substantial cognitive impairment and memory loss, placing a heavy burden on the affected individuals and their families, friends, and caregivers. It affects 2.67 million people in Africa, the majority of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa. The prevalence of this disease is expected to rise drastically to approximately 150 million individuals worldwide by 2050, as estimated by the WHO. AIM: This paper offers an integrative profile of Alzheimer's disease in Afr

The Impact of Service Learning on Academic, Professional and Physical Wellbeing Competences of EFL Teacher Education Students.

In response to the challenges of the 21st century, the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) has been committed to the development of a training model that focuses on the acquisition of cognitive, physical, and social competences, among others, rather than the mere acquisition of knowledge. This approach has gained momentum in recent years, where the learners are the protagonists of their own learning process. This change of approach requires a change in methodology and involves a renewal of the methodological approach in Spanish universities. Service learning (S-L) is an active methodology th

Mapping physical activity patterns in hospitalised patients with moderate to severe acquired brain injury - MAP-ABI: Protocol for an observational study.

INTRODUCTION: The physical activity level in patients hospitalised for rehabilitation across multiple diagnoses is low. Moderate to severe acquired brain injury further reduces activity levels as impaired physical and cognitive functioning affect mobility independence. Therefore, supervised out-of-bed mobilisation and physical activity training are essential rehabilitation strategies. Few studies have measured the physical activity patterns in the early phases of rehabilitation after moderate to severe brain injury. OBJECTIVES: To map and quantify physical activity patterns in patients admitt

Postoperative Learning and Memory Dysfunction Is More Severe in Males But Is Not Persistent and Transmittable to Next Generation in Young Adult Rats.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) affects numerous patients each year and is associated with poor outcomes. Currently, the duration of POCD is not known. This preclinical study determined whether POCD was persistent, different between sexes and transmittable to the next generation. METHODS: Two-month-old Sprague-Dawley rats had left carotid artery exposure under isoflurane anesthesia and their learning and memory were assessed from 5 days, 2 months, and 4 months after surgery. Rats with or without surgery were mated when they were 4 or 6 months old, and the learning and m

Psychotherapy for co-occurring symptoms of depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder in children and adults with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) struggle accessing psychotherapy services for comorbidities, including anxiety-, depressive- and obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). Apart from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for anxiety in children with ASD, it is unclear whether psychotherapy is effective for these comorbid disorders. We therefore systematically reviewed any form of psychotherapy for co-occurring symptoms of anxiety, depression and OCD in individuals with ASD.Database searches were conducted until February 2022 using EMBASE, PsycINFO and PubMed.
