BACKGROUND: Anastomosis-related complications are common after the radical resection of colon cancer. Among such complications, severe stenosis or completely occluded anastomosis (COA) are uncommon in clinical practice, and the separation of the anastomosis is even rarer. For such difficult problems as COA or anastomotic separation, clinicians tend to adopt surgical interventions, and few clinicians try to solve them through endoscopic operations.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To assess outcome of multivisceral resection in colon cancer patients and to identify predictors of survival.
METHODS: One hundred and thirteen consecutive patients with primary locally advanced colon cancer infiltrating adjacent organs undergoing multivisceral resection between 1998 and 2007 were reviewed. We report the results of the treatment and follow up of 61 patients with polyps of the colon and rectum, who underwent surgical intervention between 1983 through 1991. The mean age was 56 years (range from 41 to 56 y.) and 53% of the patients were males. The majority of the polyps were located in the anorectal region, n = 32 (52.4%) and sigmoid colon n = 17 (27.8%). Anastomotic stenosis is a poorly understood and underexamined complication of gastrointestinal surgery, reportedly most frequent in the coloproctostomy. In order to better define this problem, a questionnaire was sent to members of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons regarding patients with gastrointestinal anastomotic stenosis. A total of 123 patients with intestinal anastomotic stenosis were analyzed. Eighty-two anastomoses were stapled and 41 were handsewn. Patients who had benign polyps and cancers were studied retrospectively to define whether use of the 60-cm flexible sigmoidoscope would markedly improve the diagnostic yield over the 25-cm rigid sigmoidoscope. Of the polyps found, 48% could have been seen by the rigid sigmoidoscope and 85% by the flexible sigmoidoscope. Between 1975 and 1983, 9434 colonoscopic examinations were performed at the University Hospital of Zürich.
