Precise robot-assisted guide positioning for distal locking of intramedullary nails.

This paper presents a novel image-guided robot-based system to assist orthopedic surgeons in performing distal locking of long bone intramedullary nails. The system consists of a bone-mounted miniature robot fitted with a drill guide that provides rigid mechanical guidance for hand-held drilling of the distal screws' pilot holes. The robot is automatically positioned so that the drill guide and nail distal locking axes coincide, using a single fluoroscopic X-ray image. Since the robot is rigidly attached to the intramedullary nail or bone, no leg immobilization or real-time tracking is require

Real-time tracking and inpainting network with joint learning iterative modules for AR-based DALK surgical navigation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) is a widely used treatment for eye diseases and requires accurate and even stitch positions during the suturing process. In this regard, the utilization of Augmented Reality (AR) navigation systems shows promising potential in enhancing the stitching process, and a clear and unoccluded view of the corneal regions would help surgeons better plan the stitching positions. METHODS: In this work, we present a joint-learning and iterative network for AR-based suturing navigation. This network aims to improve the performance of the

Estimating within-stride metabolic cost from stride-average data using autoencoders and expander networks.

INTRODUCTION: Biomechanical changes due to aging increase the oxygen consumption of walking by over 30%. When this is coupled with reduced oxygen uptake capacity, the ability to sustain walking becomes compromised. This reduced physical activity and mobility can lead to further physical degeneration and mortality. Unfortunately, the underlying reasons for the increased metabolic cost are still inadequately understood. While motion capture systems can measure signals with high temporal resolution, it is impossible to directly characterize the fluctuation of metabolic cost throughout the gait cy

AI-Driven CBCT Analysis for Surgical Decision-Making and Mucosal Damage Prediction in Sinus Lift Surgery for patients with low RBH.

BACKGROUND: Decision-making for maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE) surgery in patients with low residual bone height (<4 mm) presents significant challenges, particularly in selecting surgical approaches and predicting intraoperative mucosal perforation. Traditional methods rely heavily on physician experience, lack standardization and objectivity, and often fail to meet the demands of precision medicine. This study aims to build an intelligent decision-making system based on deep learning to optimize surgical selection and predict the risk of mucosal perforation, providing clinicians with

Validation of mixed-reality surgical navigation for glenoid axis pin placement in shoulder arthroplasty using a cadaveric model.

BACKGROUND: Mixed reality may offer an alternative for computer-assisted navigation in shoulder arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy and precision of mixed-reality guidance for the placement of the glenoid axis pin in cadaver specimens. This step is essential for accurate glenoid placement in total shoulder arthroplasty. METHODS: Fourteen cadaveric shoulders underwent simulated shoulder replacement surgery by 7 experienced shoulder surgeons. The surgeons exposed the cadavers through a deltopectoral approach and then used mixed-reality surgical navigation to in

Parallel cortico-basal ganglia mechanisms for acquisition and execution of visuomotor sequences - a computational approach.

Experimental studies have suggested that many brain areas, including the basal ganglia (BG), contribute to procedural learning. Focusing on the basal ganglia-thalamocortical (BG-TC) system, we propose a computational model to explain how different brain areas work together in procedural learning. The BG-TC system is composed of multiple separate loop circuits. According to our model, two separate BG-TC loops learn a visuomotor sequence concurrently but using different coordinates, one visual, and the other motor. The visual loop includes the dorsolateral prefrontal (DLPF) cortex and the anteri

Assessing system performance.

Measuring system performance during image-guided procedures is difficult but necessary if the safety, quality, and efficiency of interventional radiology are to be improved. Because overall performance during these procedures is directly related to the operator's skill, this article will focus on how observable manifestations of skill can be elicited and analyzed. The discussion includes issues encountered when the results of "high-stakes" tests such as board certification are used to predict future system performance. The underlying theme is that process improvement uses the scientific method

[CAS of the paranasal sinuses--technology and clinical experience with the Vector-Vision-Compact-System in 102 patients].

INTRODUCTION: Functional endonasal sinus surgery has gained significant importance in the treatment of chronic inflammatory sinus disease over the past 20 years. Still, the risk of jeopardizing adjacent structures, i. e. the anterior skull base, optic nerve or carotid artery, is increased, especially in revision cases. Several attempts have been made in the past to reduce the risk of iatrogenic injuries due to this kind of surgery and to increase the safety of the procedure, one of them being the introduction and clinical application of image guided and computer assisted surgery (CAS) respecti

Effects of external body vibrations on cognitive performance through brain-cardio-respiratory dynamics.

External body vibrations (EBV) affect the human physiological and cognitive states. Here we construct a neurophysiological model integrating a cortical model and the cardiovascular system, exploring impacts of EBV on physiological and cognitive function. We adopted a reservoir computing model for cortical dynamics to investigate cognitive effects, focusing on binocular rivalry. This model successfully replicated changes in human perceptual alternation observed during voluntary respiratory control and cycling exercise. Our simulation indicates that EBV exerts frequency-dependent effects on perc

Systems Virology at Scale.

Today's subcellular and multicellular models of infection are poised to tackle bigger questions about virus-host interactions and the determinants of susceptibility. This opportunity comes from increased computing power, improved model architectures, and comprehensive datasets collected from virus-infected hosts. Here we summarize recent advances in viral modeling and data science that illustrate how systems models have successfully traversed increasing time-length scales, levels of detail, and ranges of biological context. The latest progress is encouraging, but recent findings just scratch t
