Although the prevalence of contact allergy in children is largely unknown, the most frequent contact allergens in childhood are nickel, fragrances, p-phenylenediamine, thimerosal, preservatives and components of skin care and hygiene products. Children with persistent eczema or otherwise suspected contact allergy should be patch tested. For children, the same preparations of allergens and test techniques can be used as for adults. Patch tests should be done with allergens suggested by history and with a shortened standard series, at best with small Finn-Chambers that are attached for 1 day onl

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Due to the continuously changing environmental conditions, it is necessary to regularly monitor and update the spectrum of contact allergens that elicit contact dermatitis. New contact allergens and known contact allergens with currently increasing importance need to be identified for diagnostic and preventive purposes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Within the last few years, allergic contact allergy to a number of substances derived from plants and other materials was reported for the first time. Furthermore, it has become obvious that dyes, especially paraphenylenediamine-related dyes

Chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD) is an inflammatory, immune-mediated photodermatosis characterized by erythematous, pruritic, lichenified plaques affecting photo-exposed areas of the body. The pathogenesis of CAD remains unknown, with many postulated theories in the literature. The predominant hypothesis suggests a delayed type IV hypersensitivity reaction caused by photosensitive skin antigens, similar in disease process to allergic contact dermatitis. Despite current evidence suggesting no familial inheritance, we present, to our knowledge, the first reported cases of CAD affecting three mem

The recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to the dramatic increase in use of personal protective equipment (PPE) among health care providers and the general public. Herein the authors discuss the various occupational dermatoses including allergic and irritant contact dermatitis, acne, seborrheic dermatitis, and rosacea related to frequent handwashing, disinfecting of surfaces, and prolonged wear of various PPE including face masks, gloves, and gowns. The authors provide an overview of published PPE-associated occupational dermatoses during the COVID-19 pandemic and also d

Skin lesion which develops after deep sea diving is termed as coral dermatitis. The corals are known to produce a toxic substance which when comes in to contact with human skin may elicit hypersensitive reactions. Most previous reports highlight the allergic reactions caused by deep sea diving. This is a rare case of staphylococcal skin infection in a second-year medical student caused by Staphylococcus aureus; he reported a history of deep sea diving before being presented to the hospital with skin rashes. This case highlights the importance of considering infectious aetiology in cases of cor

Advances have been made in understanding and treating both common and rare dermatologic conditions. Atopic dermatitis benefits from bathing and ceramide moisturizers. Common allergic contact dermatitis may have specific presentations. Tinea capitis is effectively treated with terbinafine. Infantile hemangiomas should be treated early in the disease course and respond well to propranolol; any white sign of ulceration should be noted. Localized alopecia areata responds well to topical clobetasol, avoiding the need for intralesional injections. Topical rapamycin can be used to treat tuberous scle

Toll-like receptors are important pattern recognition receptors which have key roles in both innate and adaptive immune responses. They are strongly associated with the pathogenesis of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Furthermore, Toll-like receptors have also been implicated in the pathogenesis of several skin diseases such as skin infections, psoriasis, acne vulgaris, lichen planus, Behçet's disease, leprosy, syphilis, Lyme disease, atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis, mycosis fungoides, non-melanoma skin cancers and melanoma. In this manuscript, the structure and function

Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate (SHMG) is a preservative used in many commercially available products, including shampoos, conditioners, soaps, moisturizers, body sprays, baby wipes, room sprays, cleaning agents, and pesticides. It is in a class of chemicals known as formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Notably, members of this class have been associated with allergic contact dermatitis, possibly due to the agents themselves, the formaldehyde they release, or both. Studies on SHMG in animals have demonstrated potential for sensitization and dermatitis, and formaldehyde-allergic patients have be

Several diseases may be confused with scabies. Atypical manifestations of scabies have previously been reported, including urticaria, contact dermatitis, and dermatitis herpetiformis. There are also reports of scabies mimicking bullous pemphigoid. Here we report a case of scabies in a patient with manifestation similar to bullous pemphigoid. Direct smear of the bullous lesions was performed and was positive for scabies mites. The skin biopsy specimens submitted for light microscopy and direct immunofluorescence study were considered to be compatible with bullous pemphigoid. The patient treated

Itching is usually manifested by scratching. It is lacking before three months of age. The practitioner must determine whether itching is generalised or localised and whether a skin disease is present. The main skin diseases responsible for generalised itching are scabies, atopic dermatitis, urticaria and papular urticaria. When itching is localised, contact dermatitis or pediculosis are usually responsible. Diagnosis rests on careful analysis of symptoms. In patients without skin lesions, an external cause (irritation, environment) or an internal cause (cholestasis, chronic uraemia, lymphoma,

Total osmotic pressure does not differ significantly in suction blister fluid or in serum of healthy persons from blister fluid, suction blister fluid or serum of patients with dermatitis herpetiformis, bullous contact dermatitis and pemphigus vulgaris. The average values reach about 293 mOsmol/kg. This results from direct measurement of total osmolality with an electronic semimicroosmometer based on the principle of freezing point reduction. In opposite to colloid osmotic pressure the total osmotic pressure does not take part in blister formation of human skin in spite of the different concen

In this case report, latex-induced asthma is described in a dental assistant with an associated history of contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, and rhinitis. She switched to vinyl gloves, which eliminated her cutaneous symptoms, but her respiratory symptoms continued. Skin-testing to latex was strongly positive. Methacholine challenge and peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) were abnormal during the workweek but normalized after a two-week vacation. Nebulized latex was implicated in the development of occupational asthma, and personal latex-avoidance measures did not prevent the condition.

Rosacea is a common, recurrent, inflammatory dermatologic disorder characterized by the presence of facial erythema, visible blood vessels, papules, and pustules. The condition may cause serious psychologic morbidity and may significantly affect quality of life. The first topical rosacea therapy approved by the US Food and Drug Administration was metronidazole for the treatment of inflammatory lesions and erythema. Previously, metronidazole was available as a 0.75% gel. Improved solubility was achieved in a new, stable, aqueous gel that permitted the formulation of metronidazole 1.0%. This new
