Duplications of gastrointestinal tract are unusual anomalies, especially in the colon. We report a case with two colonic duplications in a 20 year old woman who complained of recurrent backache associated with left lower quadrant abdominal pain. Intra-abdominal sepsis is frequently present after trauma, surgical resection, or intrinsic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Infection may be generalized or localized in intraperitoneal or extraperitoneal locations as well as in solid organs. The offending microflora is polymicrobial, consisting of both aerobes and anaerobes. Adequate, prompt surgical drainage and the appropriate choice of parenteral antibiotics aimed at both types of bacteria will result in a more favorable postoperative course and will reduce the possibility of local infection and secondary septicemia.

We report a novel patient with the phenotypic characteristics of Schaaf-Yang syndrome. In addition, the patient has a severe chronic digestive malfunction, rendering him dependent on intermittent enteral supplementation. A rare case of extrahepatic biliary atresia was diagnosed by a combination of prenatal ultrasound and measurements of fetal digestive enzymes in amniotic fluid. Ultrasound at 15 and 18 weeks' gestation failed to detect the gall bladder, and amniotic fluid digestive enzyme values were below the fifth percentile. The patient decided to terminate the pregnancy. Post-abortal pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis.

The coexistence of neurofibromatous skin lesions and carcinoid of Vater's ampulla is not fortuitous. The melanocytes in the brownish pigmented skin lesions bind DOPA, while the chromaffin cells in the digestive tumour contain cytoplasmic granules where precursors of amines with digestive activity are synthetized and stored. DOPA is one of these precursors. Both diseases, therefore, are interrelated by a common embryological origin: the neural crest.

We confirmed in experiments with four beetle species--Carabus granulatus L., Pterostichus vulgaris (L.), Aphodius fimetarius (L.) and A. luridus (L.)--that these can carry and disseminate eggs of Taenia saginata.
