Ketamine abuse has increased in prevalence in the UK over the last decade, becoming more commonly abused than cocaine in young people. This pictorial review is a primer for radiologists on the pharmacology, pathophysiology, and varying imaging presentations of ketamine abuse across multiple modalities. The review discusses the changing epidemiology of ketamine abuse, the fundamentals of ketamine pharmacology, and pathophysiology of ketamine-related pathologies. We have included three cases of long-term ketamine abuse, including ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (

Age-related cerebrovascular dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a critical contributor to cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression. Aerobic physical activity (PA) and other modifiable lifestyle interventions can substantially reduce the likelihood of dementia; however, their ability to mitigate cerebrovascular alterations remains poorly defined. PA reportedly improves systemic vascular health and cognitive function in aging humans, but its impact on cerebrovascular function during aging and amyloid β (Aβ) pathology is unclear. Here, we longitudinally quantified microvas

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a serious and prevalent neurocognitive complication that poses a major clinical challenge because its mechanism is unclear. This study identifies a pathogenic pathway centred on the direct interaction between transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) and the essential N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) subunit GluN1. Using a murine POD model, the neuron-centric glutamatergic dysfunction in the hippocampus was initially confirmed through ex vivo metabolic kinetic analysis. Transcriptomic analysis revealed upregulation of Trpv4, predominantly in neurons.

Introduction: Giant sinus of Valsalva aneurysms (SVA) represent a rare cardiovascular pathology that may remain asymptomatic for an extended period. However, they are associated with a high risk of life-threatening complications, including compression of adjacent structures and aneurysm rupture. Case presentation: We report a clinical case of a 71-year-old female patient with a long-standing history of arterial hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias, in which echocardiography revealed aneurysmal dilatation of the right coronary sinus. Cardiac computed tomography (CT) confirmed the presence of a

Galectin-3 (Gal-3) dysregulation has emerged as a critical mediator of inflammatory processes in arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (AC), playing pivotal roles in modulating Wnt/β-catenin signaling and regulating macrophage polarization. AC is a rare genetic disorder, primarily driven by desmosomal gene variants, characterized by fibro-fatty replacement of the ventricular myocardium, progressive ventricular dysfunction, and heightened arrhythmic risk in the young and athletes. To investigate the role of this multifaceted lectin in AC pathogenesis, we developed and characterized a stable lgals3a (-a

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) are opportunistic pathogens in pigs and can cause systemic infections with neurological signs. Cases in suckling piglets have rarely been reported. In November 2024, suckling piglets aged 1-3 weeks on a commercial pig farm developed neurological signs, including altered consciousness, vertical nystagmus, ataxic gait, and recumbency. Within two affected batches comprising 1150 and 1200 piglets, 17 and 26 animals, respectively, developed clinical signs (morbidity 1.48% and 2.17%). Initial treatment with amoxicillin and dexamethasone was ineffec

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a systemic disorder, caused by different pathogenic variants in the fibrillin-1 gene (FBN1). Interestingly, patients with MFS are often characterized with an asthenic body type, most likely associated with systemic metabolic alterations. We evaluate the effects of a high-fat diet (HFD) on aortic pathology and metabolism in a mouse model of MFS.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Male Fbn1C1041G/+ MFS mice and wild-type littermates were fed a chow or a HFD for 13 weeks. Compared to chow, HFD-fed mice show increased body weight and white adipose tissue, developed

OBJECTIVE: Asherman's syndrome (AS) is a significant cause of subfertility in women from developing countries. Over 80% of AS cases in these regions are linked to dilation and curettage (D&C) procedures following pregnancy. The incidence of AS in patients with infertility and recurrent miscarriage can be as high as 10%, while the pregnancy rate in cases of moderate to severe adhesions can be as low as 34%. We aimed to establish a hysteroscopic artificial intelligence system using image-deep-learning algorithms for fertility assessment.
METHODS: This diagnostic study included 555 cases with 49

BACKGROUND: Polyomavirus ureteritis is a rare but increasingly recognized complication in kidney transplantation, with the potential to cause ureteral stenosis and graft loss. We report two pathologically confirmed cases of polyomavirus ureteritis presenting as ureteral stenosis, successfully treated with ureterovesical reimplantation surgery and adjustments in immunosuppressive therapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: The first case describes a 41-year-old male renal transplant recipient, who presented with progressive hydronephrosis and an elevated serum creatinine (Scr) level of 308 μmol/L 5 months pos

Intracerebral aneurysms (IAs) are pathological dilatations of cerebral arteries whose rupture leads to subarachnoid hemorrhage, a significant cause of disability and death. Inflammation is recognized as a critical contributor to the formation, growth, and rupture of IAs; however, its precise actors have not yet been fully elucidated. Here, we report CNS-associated macrophages (CAMs), also known as border-associated macrophages, as one of the key players in IA pathogenesis, acting as critical mediators of inflammatory processes related to IA ruptures. Using a new mouse model of middle cerebral

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: A choledochal cyst is a rare congenital biliary tract pathology. It displays an evident dilation that could arise in any part along the biliary tree. Its incidence rate reflects its rarity when it takes place in 1 per 100,000-to-150,000 newborns. 75 % of them are detected in early childhood, whereas around 20 % are identified and diagnosed in adulthood. The gender-specific predominance favors females over males with an almost 4:1 ratio. Our case is of an adolescent male, and this constitutes a rare variant of the previous criteria. Furthermore, the distal end of th

Identifying a submandibular (Wharton's) duct punctum often hinders sialendoscopy; however, there is a paucity of evidence on whether the appearance of Wharton's duct papilla impacts the sialendoscopic procedure. A classification of Wharton's duct papillae based on the macroscopic appearance, size of dilatation probes, and sialendoscopic approach was proposed herein. The classification describing four main types of papillae, A, B, C, and D, was prospectively evaluated on 351 Wharton's duct papillae in 315 patients. For each papillae type, the demographic/clinical data, intraoperative complicati

BACKGROUND Incarcerated inguinal hernias (IGHs) combined with abdominal cocoons (ACs) are uncommon in adults. Abdominal cavity exploration using laparoscopy via the hernial sac (hernioscopy) has rarely been reported. Here, an elderly man with unilateral IGH complicated by a contralateral inguinal hernia and AC was found using hernioscopy. We present the surgical decision-making points in an elderly patient with IGH, enrich the diversity of AC, and propose a relatively novel hernioscopy approach. CASE REPORT A 90-year-old man presented with chronic constipation and reducible right inguinal mass

BACKGROUND: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) associated with tumors of the cauda equina is rare. Here, we report two cases of NPH attributed to cauda equina ependymomas.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 63-year-old male presented with progressive gait disturbance, dementia, and urinary incontinence. When the lumbar MR documented an intradural tumor involving the cauda equina at the L2-L3 level; the tumor was excised; pathologically, it proved to be a myxopapillary ependymoma. Postoperatively, however, the patient's continued gait disturbance led to a brain CT that documented ventricular dilation consis

Different types of cardiac hypertrophy have been associated with an increased volume of cardiac myocytes (CMs), along with changes in CM morphology. While the effects of cell volume on gene expression are well known, the effects of cell shape are not well understood. This paper describes a method that has been designed to systematically analyze the effects of CM morphology on gene expression. It details the development of a novel single-cell trapping strategy that is then followed by single-cell mRNA sequencing. A micropatterned chip has also been designed, which contains 3000 rectangular-shap
