Promoting Physical Activity in People With Parkinson's Disease Through a Smartphone App: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Physical activity has beneficial symptomatic effects for people with Parkinson's disease (PD), but increasing-and sustaining-a physically active lifestyle remains challenging. We investigated the feasibility (ability to increase step counts) and usability of a behavioral intervention using a motivational smartphone application to remotely increase physical activity in PD. METHODS: We performed a 4-week, double-blind pilot trial. Thirty people with PD who were able to walk independently and did not take more than 7000 steps at baseline were randomized to minimal, modera

Impact of prebiotics and postbiotics in the management of constipation: Analysis of their differentiated modulation of intestinal microbiota.

Chronic constipation represents a burden in the modern world and is most prevalent in the elderly. Constipation has been linked to alterations in the gut microbiota, especially to an increase in methanogenic microorganisms. Prebiotics and some probiotics have already shown beneficial effects in constipation through improving stool consistency and modulating the gut microbiota. In the current double-blind, randomized and parallel-arm clinical study, 24 subjects with constipation were supplemented with NextDext™, a dextran prebiotic, or ABB C24, a prebiotic-postbiotic combination of NextDext™ an

Inter-effort recovery hypoxia did not mitigate acute treadmill effects in people with Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Hypoxia exposure has been suggested as a complementary strategy for gait rehabilitation in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, due to the significant decrease in oxygen availability, the practical use of hypoxia may mitigate the positive effects of other interventions on gait in people with PD, such as treadmill-based exercise. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of inter-effort recovery hypoxia (IEH) during treadmill sessions on gait in people with PD. METHODS: Nineteen individuals with PD underwent this randomized, double-blind, controlled trial. The experimental ses

Comparison of Esketamine/Propofol and Sufentanil/Propofol on Intraoperative Hypoxemia During Bronchoscopy: A Randomized Trial.

PURPOSE: Propofol and sufentanil are the most commonly used anesthetics during bronchoscopy. Esketamine is an s-enantiomer of ketamine racemate and has both sedative and analgesic effects, it does not inhibit respiration and maintains hemodynamic stability. We aimed to compare the intraoperative hypoxemia risk of esketamine/propofol with sufentanil/propofol for patients in bronchoscopy. METHODS: This study was an investigator-initiated, single-center, randomized, double-blind clinical trial. Patients undergoing bronchoscopy were randomly assigned to receive either sufentanil group (n = 33; su

Analgesia and sedative effects of a fixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture on supragingival scaling patients: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Pain during supragingival scaling is often uncomfortable for patients, causing varying degrees of fear and anxiety, thus affecting patient comfort and compliance during treatment and reducing the effectiveness of treatment. Nitrous oxide/oxygen mixtures have the advantages of analgesic and sedative effects and are well tolerated. The purpose of this study is to explore the safety and effectiveness of a fixed inhaled nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture analgesia technology in the process of supragingival scaling and to provide empirical evidence for patients to reduce pain and reduce anx

Oxytocin Reduces Subjective Fear in Naturalistic Social Contexts via Enhancing Top-Down Middle Cingulate Amygdala Regulation and Brain-Wide Fear Representations.

Accumulating evidence from animal and human studies suggests a fear-regulating potential of the neuropeptide oxytocin (OT), yet the clinical translation into novel interventions for pathological fear requires a behavioral and neurofunctional characterization under close-to-real-life conditions. Here, we combined a naturalistic fMRI-design that elicited strong and immersive fear experience in social and non-social contexts with a preregistered between-subjects randomized double-blind placebo-controlled intranasal OT trial (24 IU, n  =  67 healthy men). OT selectively reduced subjective fear in
