[Coordination patterns assessed by a continuous measure of joints coupling during upper limb repetitive movements].

We analyzed the coordination patterns between elbow, shoulder and trunk in a motor task consisting of reaching out, picking up a cylinder, and transporting it back by using the Dynamical Systems Theory and calculating the continuous relative phase (CRP), a continuous measure of the coupling between two interacting joints. We used an optoelectronic motion analysis system consisting of eight infra-red ray cameras to detect the movements of nine skin-mounted markers. We calculated the root square of the adjusted coefficient of determination, the coefficient of multiple correlation (CMC), in order…

No Association Between Growth Hormone Therapy and Upper Extremity Physeal Tension Injuries: A Matched Case-control Study.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence has identified a strong association between growth hormone therapy and physeal injuries in the lower extremity; however, few studies have investigated this association in the upper extremity. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Do pediatric patients with physeal tension injuries of the shoulder and elbow have higher odds of having exposure to recombinant growth hormone therapy than matched controls? (2) Are the odds of having exposure to recombinant growth hormone therapy in physeal tension injuries different when stratified by shoulder and elbow injuries? METHODS: Using a ma…

Motor unit mechanisms of speed control in mouse locomotion.

During locomotion, the coordinated activity of dozens of muscles shapes the kinematic features of each stride, including systematic changes … from the lateral and long heads of the triceps brachii, which drive monoarticular extension of the elbow and biarticular movements of the elbow and shoulder, respectively. In contrast to prior studies employing bulk electromyography (EMG) to examine muscle activity, our recordings revealed the diversity of spike patterning across motor units, as well a …

A Novel Technique of Arc Fixator for Supracondylar Humerus Fractures in Older Children: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Traditionally displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus are treated by percutaneous pinning and above-elbow slab/cast support. Crossed pinning is commonly used as it provides better biomechanical stability than lateral pinning. The fracture is often associated with a high risk of complications such as neurovascular injury, pulselessness, and the development of swelling or compartment syndrome in acute scenarios. These clinical conditions require regular examination of neurovascular structures and forearm swelling, which is difficult with a slab or cast. Post-surgery Slab o…

Correlation between electromyography findings and plasticity grading score after long-term phrenic nerve to musculocutaneous nerve transfer in brachial plexus injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with complete traumatic brachial plexus injuries often require nerve transfers to restore lost function. Phrenic nerve (PN)-musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) transfer can be used to restore elbow flexion. The degree to which reinnervated muscles achieve independent control requires central plastic changes. The central program of the PN donor nerve needs to disconnect and establish connections with that of the recipient MCN. This study aimed to improve understanding of the brain's changes after PN-MCN transfer by correlating electromyography (EMG) findings with clinical plasticit…

Clinical Results of Treatment of Comminuted Olecranon Fracture With Free Articular Fragments Using the Embedded Subchondral K-Wire Fixation Along With Plate Fixation.

PURPOSE: Comminuted olecranon fractures with free articular fragments pose considerable surgical challenges because of anatomical complexity … aphic evaluations (Mayo classification and computed tomography imaging) and functional scores (Mayo Elbow Performance Score and range of motion). RESULTS: All fractures achieved union by 20 weeks, with 42.9% united by 12 weeks and 85.7% by 15 weeks. Anatomic reduction was achieved in 64.3% of cases, whereas the remaining 35.7% had satisfactory reductio …

Chronic pain and mortality risk among middle-age and older Japanese: the Shika town cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between chronic pain (CP) and mortality among the Japanese elderly population remains unclear due to limited … ates among those with chronic headache (alive = 1.40% vs dead = 9.10%; P = 0.004) and neck/shoulder/elbow/hand pain (alive = 15.50% vs dead = 31.80%; P = 0.038) were significantly higher among the dead group compared to those alive in women. The odds of mortality associated with chronic headache (9.238 [95% CI 1.729-49.352]; P = 0.009) and neck/shoulder …

Lateral Open Wedge Osteotomy and Lateral Condyle Fusion In Situ for Children With Condyle Nonunion and Cubitus Valgus Deformity.

PURPOSE: Long-term nonunion of the lateral humeral condyle (LHC) can result in progressive cubitus valgus, elbow pain, instability, and delayed ulnar nerve palsy. Various techniques have been proposed for correction, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The purpose of this study was to introduce a lateral open wedge osteotomy (LOWO) procedure combined with in situ osteosynthesis of nonunited LHC for the treatment of long-term LHC nonunion with cubitus valgus deformity. METHODS: We evaluated 18 pediatric patients who had a cubitus valgus deformity greater than 10 degrees after nonun…

Treatment trends in distal humerus fractures between ABOS part II candidates.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine how fellowship training influences the treatment of distal humerus fractures with either total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) or open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). METHODS: The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Part II Examination Database was queried for all orthopaedic surgeons who sat for the Part II examination between the years 2003-2019. Inclusion criteria were ORIF or TEA cases, selected by individual CPT codes for each procedure, and patients of at least age 65 years who sustained acute distal humerus fractures. Analysis w…
