[Cognitive dysfunction and emotional disturbances in children with neurofibromatosis type one (Recklinghausen's disease). Review of the literature].

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder associated with a high risk of the neuropsychological, emotional and psychosocial disturbances in children with NF1. In this research the results of the psychological and neuropsychological studies in children with NF1 were presented. According to data of current research, the most common cognitive deficits are connected with visual-spatial impairment, however verbal, working memory and executive function deficits associated with prefrontal cortex dysfunction are also important. The results indicate that the neuropsychological deficits may i

The validity of using self-reports to assess emotion regulation abilities in adults with autism spectrum disorder.

PURPOSE: The current paper focused on the validity of using self-reports to assess emotion regulation abilities in autism spectrum disorders … period ranging from 4 to 12 months. RESULTS: ASD participants were able to report about their own emotions using self-reports. BVAQ-B showed reasonable convergent validity and test-retest reliability in both groups. Scores on both alexithymia scales were stable across the two participant groups. However, results revealed that although the TAS-20 total sc …

Effects of prenatal maternal stress by repeated cold environment on behavioral and emotional development in the rat offspring.

It has been reported that many types of stresses, which caused physiological and psychological alterations in dams as prenatal maternal stress, affected behavioral and emotional traits of their offspring. However, effects of environmental temperature changes, which induce various stress responses in both animals and humans, have not been assessed as prenatal maternal stress. Repeated cold stress (RCS) is a type of chronic cold stress in which environmental temperature changes rapidly and frequently several times within a day. In the present study, to investigate effects of chronic maternal str

Early postnatal stress alters the 5-HTergic modulation to emotional stress at postadolescent periods of rats.

Several lines of evidence have shown that traumatic events during the early postnatal stage might precipitate long-lasting alteration in the functional properties underlying emotional expression. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the early postnatal stress alters the 5-HTergic mechanism underlying regulation of emotional stress, focusing on the 5-HT(1A) receptor-mediated synaptic responses in adult rats. Pups were exposed to aversive stimulus, footshock (FS) at the postnatal period of the second (2W) and the third week (3W). At postadolescent period (10-12-week-old), electrop

Perceived facial expressions of emotion as motivational incentives: evidence from a differential implicit learning paradigm.

Participants (N = 216) were administered a differential implicit learning task during which they were trained and tested on 3 maximally distinct 2nd-order visuomotor sequences, with sequence color serving as discriminative stimulus. During training, 1 sequence each was followed by an emotional face, a neutral face, and no face, using backward masking. Emotion (joy, surprise, anger), face gender, and exposure duration (12 ms, 209 ms) were varied between participants; implicit motives were assessed with a picture-story exercise. For power-motivated individuals, low-dominance facial expressions e

Differential effects of acute diazepam on emotional and neutral memory tasks in acutely hospitalized depressed patients.

With the hypothesis that depression affects memory through a mechanism other than that of the benzodiazepines, the present study evaluated the acute effect of diazepam 10 mg upon explicit memory in patients with major depression. A double-blind, placebo (starch 50 mg) controlled experiment was carried out with 19 patients randomly divided into diazepam (n = 10) and placebo (n = 9) groups. They were evaluated by the Mini-Mental State Examination, and tests were conducted for immediate and delayed (short-term) memory with emotionally toned stimuli (negative, positive, neutral), recognition, and

Prospective assessment of emotional distress, cognitive function, and quality of life in patients with cancer treated with chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The current study sought to delineate prospectively the rates and clinical course of emotional distress, cognitive impairment, and quality of life (QOL) in chemotherapy-naive patients with cancer and to consider the determinants of global QOL. METHODS: Patients who consented to participate were administered the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30 questionnaire, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale before and at the end of treatment (EOT). RESULTS: Of the 102 patients initially assessed, 80 (78.4%) c

A qualitative study of the experience of caring for a person with bulimia nervosa. Part 1: The emotional impact of caring.

OBJECTIVE: Family carers of individuals with mental disorders have been found to experience mental health difficulties of their own. There has been little research into the impact of caring for individuals with eating disorders. A preliminary study found that carers of individuals with anorexia nervosa experience more difficulties and distress than carers of people with psychoses (Treasure et al., [2001]. Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, 36, 343-347). This is the first study to qualitatively investigate the experiences of carers of individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN). METHOD:

Conscientiousness, emotional stability, perceived control and the frequency, recency, rate and years of blood donor behaviour.

OBJECTIVES: Personality factors were used to explore aspects of blood donor behaviour (a form of prosocial volunteer behaviour). Based on the Big 5 model of personality, a number of mediation (via perceived control) and moderation hypotheses linking personality to aspects of blood donor behaviour (frequency, recency, rate and years of past behaviour) were explored. DESIGN: A cross-section quasi-experimental survey of 630 blood donors. METHOD: Prior to donation, 630 donors completed measures of the Big 5 personality domains and donor history (frequency, recency, rate and years of past behavio

Behavioral and emotional response of Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) mothers after their offspring receive an aggression.

The authors of this study investigated the behavioral and emotional response of female Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) to an aggression received by their offspring to evaluate the existence of cognitive empathic responses in a naturalistic setting. After their offspring received an aggression, mothers did not direct increased affiliative contacts to them. The factors likely to affect the degree of distress in the offspring or the perceived risk for the mother failed to appropriately modulate maternal behavior. Finally, mothers did not increase their frequency of scratching (a behavioral ind

[Increased allergy risk in depressed inpatient women: what is the role of electrodermal and cognitive-emotional variables?].

Electrodermal hypoactivity is a known phenomenon in depression. For different reasons a hyperactive electrodermal system should be more likely in allergic persons because of the known hyperreactivity both to psychological and immunological stimuli. Hypothesis of this study therefore was that this higher activity should also be seen in comorbid allergic depressed and anxious patients in comparison to non-allergic depressive patients. In a two-factorial variance analytic design (factor 1: anxiety/depression and anxiety/depression versus factor 2: allergy/non-allergy) we examined 45 age matched f

Subscales scores of the Lithuanian version of CBCL--preliminary data on the emotional and behavioural problems in childhood and adolescence.

This study set out to investigate some psychometric properties of the Lithuanian version of CBCL for providing the preliminary data on the emotional and behavioural problems in Lithuanian children taking factors such as gender, age, SES and family composition into account. The CBCL was completed by parents of 7- to 11- and 12- to 14-year-old school children (N = 1296) drawn from the urban and suburban population. Younger boys scored higher than girls on externalizing problems and total problems scores, and older girls scored higher on internalizing problems. Younger children scored higher than

Emotional responding to hyperventilation as a predictor of agoraphobia status among individuals suffering from panic disorder.

Some data suggest that panic patients with extensive agoraphobia (PDA) display more intense respiratory distress during their panic attacks than Panic disorder (PD) patients. However, no studies have determined if PDA patients also show heightened sensitivity to a respiratory challenge compared to PD patients. The current study examined the differential emotional responding to hyperventilation among PDA patients, PD patients, and a non-clinical group with a history of panic attacks. Response to hyperventilation challenge did not distinguish non-clinical panickers from panic patients; however,

[The current conception of the unconscious - empirical results of neurobiology, cognitive sciences, social psychology and emotion research].

The influence of the unconscious on psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy: a comprehensive concept of unconscious processes based on empirical evidence. The theory of the Unconscious constitutes the basis of psychoanalysis and of psychodynamic therapy. The traditional description of the Unconscious as given by Freud is of historical significance and not only gained widespread acceptance but also attracted much criticism. The most important findings of neurobiology, the cognitive sciences, social psychology and emotion research in relation to the Unconscious are compared with this traditiona

The physical, sexual and emotional violence history of middle-aged women: a community-based prevalence study.

OBJECTIVES: To determine current and lifetime rates of the experience of partner abuse and sexual violence in a community-based sample of middle-aged women and compare these to figures obtained in a general practice setting. DESIGN AND METHODS: This research was part of the Melbourne Women's Midlife Health Project (MWMHP), an observational, longitudinal, population-based study of 438 Australian-born women conducted over nine years. In 1996, during the sixth year of the study, we asked the MWMHP participants to complete a self-administered "violence questionnaire", incorporating a modified Con

Theory of mind and emotion-recognition functioning in autistic spectrum disorders and in psychiatric control and normal children.

The hypothesis was tested that weak theory of mind (ToM) and/or emotion recognition (ER) abilities are specific to subjects with autism. Differences in ToM and ER performance were examined between autistic (n = 20), pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) (n = 20), psychiatric control (n = 20), and normal children (n = 20). The clinical groups were matched person-to-person on age and verbal IQ. We used tasks for the matching and the context recognition of emotional expressions, and a set of first- and second-order ToM tasks. Autistic and PDD-NOS children could not be

Do apnea monitors decrease emotional distress in parents of infants at high risk for cardiopulmonary arrest?

INTRODUCTION: The immediate post-partum period is stressful for most parents. The need to use a home apnea monitor may tax parental coping skills even further. Therefore, we conducted a study to assess the psychosocial consequences of apnea monitoring on parental emotional distress and family functioning. METHOD: We studied 104 parents of infants at high risk for cardiopulmonary arrest. Fifty-two parents had infants who used home apnea monitors, and 52 parents were age-matched and gender-matched control subjects. Data were collected during the infant's hospitalization, and then at 2 weeks, 3

Effects of Active Versus Passive Group Music Therapy on Preadolescents with Emotional, Learning, and Behavioral Disorders.

This study attempted to compare the behavioral effects of active, rhythm-based group music therapy vs. those of passive, listening-based group music therapy on preadolescents with emotional, learning, and behavioral disorders. It was hypothesized that preadolescents who participated in active music therapy would more significantly improve target behaviors than those involved in passive music therapy. Achenbach's Teacher Report Form (TRF) was used to confirm changes among subjects in attention, motivation, and hostility as rated by homeroom teachers. Twelve music therapy sessions were conducted

Effect of the character of autonomic response and the emotional and personality features of a human being on reactions of the vestibular system.

A moderate degree (R = 0.37-0.45) of correlation between the values of vestibular reactivity, autonomic response, and emotional and personality characteristics was revealed. A conclusion was made that the following features of the background functional organization of the vestibular system, autonomic and emotional and personality characteristics are space sickness predictors: (1) a high coefficient of enhancement of the vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) and its asymmetry with an excess of the physiological norm limits, (2) the presence of depressive manifestations, (3) the impulsive and autistic pe
