BACKGROUND: In asphyxiated neonates, abnormal proinflammatory cytokine/chemokine production may be induced. High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB-1) protein is a new type of proinflammatory cytokine that induces abnormal inflammatory responses involving proinflammatory cytokine production. However, the physiological significance of HMGB-1 in asphyxia is poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate whether serum HMGB-1 levels were changed in asphyxia by measuring the serum concentration of HMGB-1 in both asphyxiated and normally delivered neonates at birth.

Dicrocoeliosis is a parasitic disease caused by trematodes belonging to the genus Dicrocoelium. It usually produces mild symptoms, and for this reason, dicrocoeliosis often remains undetected. This study used random peptide libraries, displayed by bacteriophage T7 and M13, to identify mimotopes from four monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific to Burkholderia pseudomallei. Bound phages, selected from fourth-round panning with each mAb, were tested for binding specificity with each mAb using ELISA, before being further amplified and checked for phage peptide sequence using PCR and DNA sequencing. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) using the QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G) test, the TSPOT.TB test and the tuberculin skin test (TST) in drug users and to evaluate the performance of the QFT-G and TSPOT.TB tests vs. the TST.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine risks associated with each test outcome.

A study was conducted between January 2003 and June 2004 on 19,082 carthorses in 28 towns in Ethiopia to investigate the epidemiology of equine histoplasmosis (EH). Clinical and microscopic examinations were used and an overall prevalence of 18.8% (3579/19082) was recorded. Statistically significant (P<0.001) differences was observed in the average prevalence with high, medium, and low prevalence categories. Brucella spp. have been recently isolated from a variety of marine mammals. Serum samples from 58 Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursipa aduncus) from the Solomon Islands were tested for antibodies to Brucella spp. by the tube agglutination test (TAT), enzymed-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and immunoblotting. Anti-Brucella spp. antibodies were detected by TAT and ELISA in 31 and 40 of 58 samples, respectively. These results suggest that Pacific bottlenose dolphins from the Solomon Islands are infected with Brucella spp. or a Brucella-like organism.
