Functional architecture of executive control and associated event-related potentials in macaques.

The medial frontal cortex (MFC) enables executive control by monitoring relevant information and using it to adapt behavior. In macaques performing a saccade countermanding (stop-signal) task, we simultaneously recorded electrical potentials over MFC and neural spiking across all layers of the supplementary eye field (SEF). We report the laminar organization of neurons enabling executive control by monitoring the conflict between incompatible responses, the timing of events, and sustaining goal maintenance. These neurons were a mix of narrow-spiking and broad-spiking found in all layers, but t

Visual Selective Attention P300 Source in Frontal-Parietal Lobe: ERP and fMRI Study.

Visual selective attention can be achieved into bottom-up and top-down attention. Different selective attention tasks involve different attention control ways. The pop-out task requires more bottom-up attention, whereas the search task involves more top-down attention. P300, which is the positive potential generated by the brain in the latency of 300 ~ 600 ms after stimulus, reflects the processing of attention. There is no consensus on the P300 source. The aim of present study is to study the source of P300 elicited by different visual selective attention. We collected thirteen participants'

Comparing the effects of focal and conventional tDCS on motor skill learning: A proof of principle study.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has emerged as a promising intervention in clinical and behavioral neuroscience; however, the response variability to this technique has limited its impact, partly due to the widespread of current flow with conventional methods. Here, we investigate whether a more targeted, focal approach over the primary motor cortex (M1) is advantageous for motor learning and targeting specific neuronal populations. Our preliminary results show that focal stimulation leads to enhanced skill learning and differentially recruits distinct pathways to M1. This findi

Dysfunctions of the vestibular organ in patients with migrainous vertigo in the results of objective tests of the equilibrium system.

<b>Introduction:</b> Migrainous vertigo (MV) is one of the most common causes of episodic vertigo. Diagnostic criteria for MV are described in the appendix to the third edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (Beta Version). The dysfunction exerts its impact on certain peripheral and central structures within the vestibular system. </br></br> <b>Aim:</b> The aim of the study was to assess the function of the central and peripheral vestibular system in patients with MV based on the results of objective clinical tests including videon

Visual Processing During the Interictal Period Between Migraines: A Meta-Analysis.

Migraine is a poorly understood neurological disorder and a leading cause of disability in young adults, particularly women. Migraines are characterized by recurring episodes of severe pulsating unilateral headache and usually visual symptoms. Currently there is some disagreement in the electrophysiological literature regarding the universality of all migraineurs exhibiting physiological visual impairments also during interictal periods (i.e., the symptom free period between migraines). Thus, this meta-analysis investigated the evidence for altered visual function as measured electrophysiologi

Associations of neural error-processing with symptoms and traits in a dimensional sample recruited across the obsessive-compulsive spectrum.

The error-related negativity (ERN), a neural response to errors, has been associated with several forms of psychopathology and assumed to represent a neural risk marker for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders. Yet, it is still unknown which specific symptoms or traits best explain ERN variation. This study investigated performance-monitoring in participants (N = 100) recruited across a spectrum of obsessive-compulsive characteristics (n = 26 patients with OCD; n = 74 healthy participants including n = 24 with low, n = 24 with medium, and n = 26 with high OC-characteristic

Behavioural and electrophysiological analyses of written word processing in spoken and literary Arabic: New insights into the diglossia question.

Diglossia in Arabic describes the existence and the use of two varieties of the same language: spoken Arabic (SA) and literary Arabic (LA). SA, the dialect first spoken by Arabic native speakers, is used in non-formal situations for everyday conversations, and varies from one region to another in the Arabic world. LA, acquired later in life when the children learn to read and write at school, is used for formal purposes such as media, speeches in public and religious sermons. Previous research showed that, in the auditory modality, SA words are processed faster than LA ones. In the visual moda

Short interval intracortical inhibition: Variability of amplitude and threshold-tracking measurements with 6 or 10 stimuli per point.

Reduced short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) in motor neuron disease has been demonstrated by amplitude changes (A-SICI) and threshold-tracking (T-SICI) using 10 stimuli per inter-stimulus interval (ISI). To test whether fewer stimuli would suffice, A-SICI and T-SICI were recorded twice from 30 healthy subjects using 6 and 10 stimuli per ISI. Using fewer stimuli increased mean A-SICI variances by 23.8% but the 7.3% increase in T-SICI variance was not significant. We conclude that our new parallel threshold-tracking SICI protocol, with 6 stimuli per ISI, can reduce time and stimulus n

Age-related strengthening of cerebello-cortical motor circuits.

Effective connectivity between the cerebellum and primary motor cortex (M1) is critical for motor learning and motor control. Despite evidence of cerebellar atrophy and declines in motor learning and motor control with advanced age, recent behavioral studies indicate that cerebellar-dependent motor learning processes are preserved or even enhanced in older adults. However, physiological evidence of heightened cerebellar excitability leading to strengthened cerebellar-M1 connectivity with advanced age is lacking. Here, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation to assess age-related effects on c

Effects of mental fatigue on risk preference and feedback processing in risk decision-making.

Mental fatigue is a common phenomenon in modern people, especially after a long period of mental work. Individuals frequently have to make critical decisions when in a mentally fatigued state. As an important and complex cognitive function, risk decision-making might be influenced by mental fatigue, which is consequent with increased distraction and poor information processing. However, how mental fatigue shapes individuals' decision-making remains relatively unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of mental fatigue on risk decision-making performance and risk-preference i

Sex differences on the response to others' gains and losses under cooperation and competition.

Although previous studies have shown that task performance is affected by others' presence and (the consequences of) others' actions, it is unclear how task performance varies in different social situations and the role that sex plays in it. In the present study, we investigated sex differences in the evaluation processing of another person's outcomes in both cooperative and competitive contexts. We recorded the event-related potentials (ERPs) of 72 normal adults who played a gambling task with a partner or against an opponent. The behavioral results indicate that males take longer to make dec

Electrophysiology reveals cognitive-linguistic alterations after concussion.

Language deficits and alterations to the N400 ERP are commonly reported in aphasia and moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), but have seldomly been investigated after mild TBI, such as concussion. In the present study, the N400 was recorded from young adults within 1-month after concussion and matched controls during a sentence processing task. The N400 recorded to semantically incongruent sentence-final words was significantly more negative and with a more anterior distribution in the concussion group than control group. Among the concussion group, a weaker N400 was associated with
