OBJECTIVE: To observe the potential effect of tea polyphenols and EGCG on cultured hypertrophic myocyte induced by Ang II.
METHODS: The study used cultured neonatal rat myocytes as a model to observe the potential effects of 10 microg/ml, 50 microg/ml and 100 microg/ml tea polyphenols and EGCG on hypertrophic myocyte induced by Ang II. We will measure the protein contents, the volume of myocyte, the numbers of fibrocasts.

In animals with peroxide model of atherosclerosis and patients with cerebral atherosclerosis, the protecting effects of antioxidants were studied. These were shown to inhibit both humoral and local manifestations of experimental atherosclerosis. In the patients, lipid levels were lowered with peroxidation indices returning to normal levels and clinical state simultaneously improving.

Treatment of reconstituted collagen fibrils and pieces of rat dermis with the crude extract, purified tannins or (+)-catechin from betel nut (Areca catechu) increases their resistance to both human and bacterial collagenases in a concentration-dependent manner. These tanning agents may stabilise collagen in vivo following damage to the oral epithelium, and promote the sub-epithelial fibrosis which occurs in betel nut chewers.
