Vibration sensitivity of slowly and rapidly adapting cutaneous mechanoreceptors in the human foot and leg.

The activities of 30 rapidly adapting cutaneous receptors (FA) and 23 slowly adapting cutaneous receptors (SA) were recorded from the lateral peroneal nerve using the microneurographic method. Their sensitivity to mechanical vibrations with constant amplitude applied at various frequencies to the center of the receptive field was studied. These two populations of cutaneous receptors were found to be very sensitive to this stimulus: they could be driven in a one to one manner up to between 100 and 200 Hz. The difference lay in the response observed when the vibration frequency was increased to

Anatomic location of acute diabetic foot infection. Its influence on the outcome of treatment.

One hundred ten diabetic foot infections were studied in 76 patients with reference to the effect of the anatomic location of the infection on the treatment outcome. Distal infections were located in the toes or metatarsal-phalangeal joints; proximal infections were located along metatarsals, at the heel, or above the ankle. Overall limb salvage was significantly lower in the proximal group (47.8%) than in the distal group (96.6%). A revascularization for healing was required in 12 per cent of hospitalizations. Mortality was significantly higher in the proximal group, but the healing times for…

Supramalleolar derotation osteotomy for lateral tibial torsion and associated equinovarus deformity of the foot.

The development of lateral tibial torsion in the paralysed lower limb is well documented, but its pathogenesis is poorly understood. This paper attempts to provide an explanation for its development when it is associated with a varus or equinovarus deformity of the hindfoot. Correction of the lateral tibial torsion by supramalleolar derotation tibial osteotomy and reorientation of the ankle mortise appear to unlock the talus from the laterally rotated position, correcting a mobile hindfoot varus deformity and altering soft-tissue tensions about the ankle so that the correction achieved is main…

[Results of soft tissue operations in the management of congenital club foot (author's transl)].

A review is given on the experiences of 152 cases of operatively treated club foot. Exact X-ray assessment is thought to be very important, as even after excellent morphological and functional end results residual X-ray changes have been observed which potentially may lead to the redevelopment of abnormalities. Clinical and radiological assessment together can only be informative of the result of management. Analysis of the "own" and "referred" patients showed better clinical and radiological results in the first group, which has been attributed to the early operation, regular follow-up and ca…

Camptodactyly, cleft palate, and club foot (the Gordon syndrome). A report of a large pedigree.

A second family is described in which camptodactyly, club foot, and cleft palate (the Gordon syndrome) is transmitted in a pattern consistent with autosomal dominant inheritance with reduced penetrance and variable expressivity. Penetrance appears to be more reduced in females than in males, and cleft palate is the least frequently manifested trait.

[Reflections concerning the radiological assessment of static flat foot in the child (author's transl)].

After a precise review of the numerous parameters studied classically in AP and lateral films of the feet under load, the authors emphasis 5 measurements which are easy to determine and which they feel to objectively cover all the deformities which may be found in the static flat foot. These are: Talo-calcaneal divergence in AP and lateral views, the angle between the calcaneum and the floor, the lateral cavitation index and, finally, the angle of the axis of the talus and of the 2nd metatarsal in AP. A score of 20 is attributed to each. A score of 0 to 20 is attributed to each of these points…
