Adult primary malignant teratoma of the thyroid is a rare disease that has a poor outcome despite aggressive therapy. A 32-year-old woman underwent a simple lobectomy of the thyroid for a progressively enlarged nodule in August 1990. Pathologic assessment of the tumor revealed a malignant teratoma. Initial success with nerve sparing retroperitoneal lymph node dissections in patients with low stage nonseminomatous germ cell tumors of the testis has led to the application of these techniques to a select group of 40 patients treated after chemotherapy at our institution between March 1988 and November 1991. One hundred and fifty-eight cases of mediastinal tumors have been studied clinicopathologically, based on patients of Nagasaki University Hospital from 1961 to 1984. BACKGROUND: Carcinoma of the upper respiratory tract is rare in childhood, and cytogenetic aberrations have not been characterized in this population. The chromosomal translocation 15;19 has been reported four times previously. All patients were young and had tumors arising in the thorax. The three reports that provide clinical follow-up all describe superior vena cava syndrome and death soon after presentation. The cerebellum plays an important role in the visual guidance of movement. In order to understand the anatomical basis of visuomotor control, we studied the projection of pontine visual cells onto the cerebellar cortex of monkeys. Wheat germ agglutinin horseradish peroxidase was injected into the dorsolateral pons two monkeys. Retrogradely labelled cells were mapped in the cerebral cortex and superior colliculus, and orthogradely labelled fibers in the cerebellar cortex. The largest number of retrogradely labelled cells in the cerebral cortex was in a group of medial extrastriate visual areas.
