The paper estimates the effect of SO2 pollution on infant mortality in Germany, 1985-2003. To avoid endogeneity problems, I exploit the natural experiment created by the mandated desulfurization at power plants and power plants' location and prevailing wind directions, which together determine treatment intensity for counties. Estimates translate into an elasticity of 0.07-0.13 and the observed reduction in pollution implies an annual gain of 826-1460 infant lives. In Germany aprox. 15% of all employees have irregular or flexible working hours. Disturbed sleep and/or hypersomnia are direct consequences of shift work and therefore described as shift work disorder. Beyond this, shift work can also be associated with specific pathological disorders. There are individual differences in tolerance to shift work. Optimization of both shift schedules and sleep to "non-physiological" times of the day are measures to counteract the negative effects of shift work. There is still not enough evidence to recommend drugs for routine use in shift workers.

The Schild excavation (1971-1975) unearthed 1871 feline bones from at least 181 cats from the town market in medieval Schleswig-Gottorf. Seven of the 189 mandibles and one of the 126 skulls were investigated using a combination of macroscopic, radiographic, and histologic examinations as well as Knoop hardness measurements. The preliminary results of examinations of three mandibles and one skull are presented and reveal that feline dental resorptive lesions were present in cats that lived in a settlement period dating from the 13th and 14th centuries in former Schleswig, Germany.

In Germany,traumatic brain injury (TBI) has an annual incidence of approximately 200000. In contrast to earlier assumptions, pituitary insufficiency is a common complication of TBI, with a prevalence of 30-50%. Primary ciliary dyskinesia is a rare etiology of sterility in man (prevalence between 1/6000 and 1/40000). Kartagener's syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by total or partial dysfunction of the ciliary or flagellated cells. This syndrome associates situs inversus, sinusitis, bronchiectasis and occasionally sterility in males. We report a case of immotile cilia syndrome with male infertility and compare the data with four other couples reported in the literature (two couples in Germany, two in the United States). The difficulty is to select an alive sperm cell for ICSI.

We report the first case of a tinea corporis with partly profound lesions in a 13-year-old girl on her arms, legs and trunk due to Trichophyton schoenleinii but without any lesion on scalp and hair. Moreover, this is the first case of an infection with Trichophyton schoenleinii in Germany since more than 40 years. The diagnosis was confirmed by microscopy of mycological specimens. Other causes of the skin symptoms could be excluded (atopic dermatitis, bacterial or other fungal infection). Clinical and epidemiological aspects of this anthropophile dermatophyte are briefly reviewed.

The authors carry out a study on a dressing which associates hydrocolloids and a lubricating material, Vaseline, used on 28 patients who suffer from acute or chronic wounds having diverse etiologies. The authors evaluate the biological process through which each wound builds scar tissue, its tolerance, efficiency and degree of acceptance with results which are frankly positive. The data in this study for these parameters coincide with those of other research projects which have been carried out in France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

In order to establish the infection patterns in the first intermediate host of Dicrocoelium dendriticum, investigations were carried out on sheep pastures situated in the eastern part of Brandenburg, Germany, during the grazing periods in 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1990. It was found that the majority of specimens of the first intermediate host, Helicella obvia, become infected in the autumn of their second year of life, when their shell diameter is of medium size. The percentage of snails containing daughter sporocysts was highest in spring. Slimeball output could be provoked only in May and June.

We describe the first case of septicaemia with Flavimonas oryzihabitans reported from Germany and possibly associated with colonisation of a venous port system. The patient, an 8-year-old T-cell leukaemic girl, was receiving a third course of chemotherapy before bone marrow transplantation. In the Federal Republic of Germany, some 700 people drown every year. Of particular importance is the so-called swimming bath black-out that occurs while swimming under water, which must always be avoidable when the causes are known and appropriate precautionary measures taken. Of life-saving importance in a case of drowning is the rapid and proper use of first aid. The severe pulmonary injury induced by freshwater or salt water aspiration urgently requires the treatment of the victim in an intensive care unit of a hospital, even after successful resuscitation.

Gastroduodenoscopy and retrograde cholangiopancreatography has been performed on 25 occasions in 20 children aged between 7 and 16. Radiographs of the clinically relevant duct or ducts were achieved in 96% of attempts, with no complications. A monovalent specific staphylococcal antiserum, type A, was obtained by means of the isolated and purified preparation of type A staphylococcal enterotoxin. This antiserum was proved to be identical to antiserum of the same type, manufactured by Serva Feinbiochemica GmbH & Co. (West Germany).
