A case of hepatic arteriovenous malformation is described in a calf that presented with a marked increase in abdominal volume and died 12 h after birth. At necropsy, the calf had marked abdominal distension and haemoperitoneum. The left hepatic lobe was reduced in size and covered by slightly whitish and intensely vascularized membranous tissue. At the edge of the left lobe there were cystic structures filled with translucent fluid. On cut surface, there were multiple cavitations well delimited by whitish walls and multiple dilated blood vessels that communicated with the cavitations. Histopat

The incidence of both cystic (CE) and alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is increasing in Germany. The CE can often be managed with drug treatment and interventional strategies. In contrast, AE shows characteristics of a malignant disease with a high morbidity and mortality. Benzimidazoles are potent drugs for both entities but with the necessity for a lifelong follow-up and the risk of side effects as well as progression under treatment. Therefore, the indications for surgical resection have to be carefully considered; however, the combination of drug treatment and surgery is the only curative appr

In addition to being the primary target of infections such as viral hepatitis, the liver may also be affected by systemic disease. These include bacterial, mycotic, and viral infections, as well as autoimmune and infiltrative diseases. These conditions generally manifest as abnormal liver biochemistries, often with a cholestatic profile, and may present with additional signs/symptoms such as jaundice and fever. A high index of suspicion and familiarity with potential causal entities is necessary to guide appropriate testing, diagnosis, and treatment.

The morbidity and mortality of hepatic fibrosis caused by various etiologies are high worldwide, and the trend is increasing annually. At present, there is no effective method to cure hepatic fibrosis except liver transplantation, and its serious complications threaten the health of patients and cause serious medical burdens. Additionally, there is no specific drug for the treatment of hepatic fibrosis, and many drugs with anti-hepatic fibrosis effects are in the research and development stage. Recently, remarkable progress has been made in the research and development of anti-hepatic fibrosis

Clinical progress in the development of new diagnostic modalities and therapeutic strategies for the management of patients with hepatic encephalopathy has lagged behind the vast knowledge that has been generated from basic studies. In this article, we critically assess matters that should be revisited, such as definition, classification, diagnosis and grading of hepatic encephalopathy, which are difficult to apply reproducibly using the current criteria. Many lines of investigation have confirmed that hepatic encephalopathy is irreversible in many patients and suggest the need for further stu

Hepatic granulomas can have various causes and their detection requires a systematic diagnostic evaluation. First, identification of risk factors for granulomatous diseases and the exclusion of extrahepatic organ manifestation are necessary. Laboratory investigations and serological screening for the most common underlying diseases of liver granulomas in Germany, such as primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), sarcoidosis and infectious causes (primarily tuberculosis and hepatitis C infections), are recommended. A liver biopsy is essential for confirming the diagnosis, whereby a minilaparoscopicall…

A 59-year-old woman presented to our hospital with liver dysfunction. Imaging revealed multiple lesions in the liver. The patient was diagnosed with peliosis hepatis using percutaneous and laparoscopic biopsies. However, her condition worsened with the appearance of new, obvious mass-forming lesions. Therefore, she underwent a second percutaneous biopsy of these lesions and was diagnosed with hepatic angiosarcoma. Her condition progressed rapidly, and she died two weeks after the diagnosis. Diagnosis of hepatic angiosarcoma in the early stages is difficult. It should be noted that hepatic angi

Liver cirrhosis is the final stage of continuous hepatic inflammatory activity derived by viral, metabolic or autoimmune origin. In the last … studies suggest that it could be a cirrhosis severity marker, in acute liver failure and in chronic hepatitis. Its role as predictor of mortality in fulminant hepatic insufficiency patients has been suggested. HR is one of the most enigmatic and fascinating biological phenomena. The rapid volume and liver function restoration after a major hepatectomy (>70% …

Hepatic steatosis can lead to liver cancer, cirrhosis, and portal hypertension. There are two main types, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcoholic liver disease. The detection and quantification of hepatic steatosis with lifestyle changes can slow the evolution from NAFLD to steatohepatitis. Currently, the gold standard for the quantification of fat in the liver is biopsy, has some limitations. Hepatic steatosis is frequently detected during cross sectional imaging. Ultrasound (US), Computed Tomography (CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provide noninvasive assessment of …

Hepatic fibrosis is a chronic liver injury process, and its continuous development can lead to cirrhosis, hepatic failure and even hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Autophagy has attracted much attention because of its controversial role in the course of hepatic fibrosis. In this review, we introduce the mechanism related to noncoding RNAs and some of the signaling pathways that promote or inhibit fibrosis by affecting autophagy. Finally, we list some targets related to autophagy that enable hepatic fibrosis therapy and forecast its prospect in hepatic fibrosis. This review will provide new idea

BACKGROUND: Hepatic injury secondary to congestive heart failure is well described, however, only limited data exist about the possible impact of acute cardiac dysfunction on the liver. We aimed to explore the possible cardio-hepatic interaction in patients with myocardial infarction.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A single-center retrospective cohort study of 1339 ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients who underwent primary coronary intervention between June 2012 to June 2019. Echocardiographic examinations were performed to assess left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and central ve

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatic tuberculosis (HTB) is rare and mimics neoplastic liver lesions clinico-radiologically leading to misdiagnosis and even unnecessary surgery.
METHODS AND MATERIAL: We analysed 43 cases of HTB diagnosed at a referral cancer centre over 10 years. Clinical details, investigations and treatment received were noted.
RESULTS: The median age was 46 years with a female preponderance (58%). HTB was diagnosed incidentally in 28% cases during surveillance imaging for a previous cancer. Constitutional symptoms (31, 72%), abdominal pain (25, 58%), fever (12, 28%), hepatomegaly

Direct-acting antiviral (DAA)-induced HCV clearance conceivably leads to improved outcomes at all stages of liver disease. However, available data suggest that the maximum measurable benefit is obtained by treating patients before they reach the stage of compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD). Ideally, all patients with chronic hepatitis C should be treated before they develop advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis, since even if sustained virologic response (SVR) reduces the risk of hepatic events (e.g. decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC]) and improves survival, further prog…

Hepatic fibrosis is a complex mechanism defined by the net deposition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) owing to liver injury caused by multiple etiologies such as viral hepatitis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Many cell types are implicated in liver fibrosis development and progression. In general, liver fibrosis starts with the recruitment of inflammatory immune cells to generate cytokines, growth factors, and other activator molecules. Such chemical mediators drive the hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) to activate the production of the ECM component. The activation of HSC is thus a cruci…

Aneurysmal ruptures are a life-threatening pathology, and while the aorta is the principal location, any aneurysmal rupture can be fatal. Most result from chronic diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, and vasculitis. Nevertheless, a rupture can result in acute decompensation and must be recognized and addressed quickly to limit morbidity and mortality. The authors describe a case of a 66-year-old female who presented to the emergency department (ED) for abdominal pain and syncope. Even though imaging did not explicitly show the specific site of rupture of the hepatic artery, the positive R

Background Hepatic and adrenocortical choristomas are unusual findings in the placenta. This meta-analysis includes our own case report and 23 previously reported cases. We searched for patterns of associated placental, fetal and maternal aberrations in order to determine whether these choristomas are clinically relevant. Case report: In our case, abortion was induced due to fetal central nervous system and renal malformations. In the placenta a hepatic choristoma (<0.1 cm), thrombangiitis obliterans and a single umbilical artery were found. Results: In the literature, the majority of lesions

Type C hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a brain dysfunction caused by severe hepatocellular failure or presence of portal-systemic shunts in patients with liver cirrhosis. In its subclinical form, called "minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE), only psychometric tests or electrophysiological evaluation can reveal alterations in attention, working memory, psychomotor speed and visuospatial ability, while clinical neurological signs are lacking. The term "covert" (CHE) has been recently used to unify MHE and Grade I HE in order to refer to a condition that is not unapparent but also non overt. "Over

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) occurs in patients with acute-on-chronic liver disease. It has a wide progression of symptoms, with its initial presentation being subtle. The symptoms of HE mainly affect mental status, the musculoskeletal system, and mood/behavior. Its severity ranges from minor disturbances in sleep-wake cycle to the patient being comatose. HE is categorized based on 4 main features: the underlying disease, the severity of manifestations, the time course, and whether precipitating factors are present. The severity of the manifestations is classically identified using the West Hav
