Tractography of the corticospinal tracts in infants with focal perinatal injury: comparison with normal controls and to motor development.

INTRODUCTION: Our aims were to (1) assess the corticospinal tracts (CSTs) in infants with focal injury and healthy term controls using probabilistic tractography and (2) to correlate the conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and tractography findings in infants with focal injury with their later motor function. METHODS: We studied 20 infants with focal lesions and 23 controls using MRI and diffusion tensor imaging. Tract volume, fractional anisotropy (FA), apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values, axial diffusivity and radial diffusivity (RD) of the CSTs were determined. Asymmetry

Trigeminal neuralgia due to neurovascular compression: high-spatial-resolution diffusion-tensor imaging reveals microstructural neural changes.

PURPOSE: To preoperatively detect, by using diffusion-tensor imaging coregistered with anatomic magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, suspected microstructural tissue changes of the trigeminal nerves in patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) resulting from neurovascular compression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was approved by the institutional review board, and written informed consent was obtained from all patients. Twenty patients (mean age, 51.3 years) with TN and evidence of neurovascular contact were examined with use of a 3.0-T MR unit combined with an eight-channel head coil before un

Evaluation of time-intensity curves in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and mastopathy obtained using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the ability of dynamic, contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) to differentiate between ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and mastopathy by analyzing their signal intensities (SIs). METHODS: After the pre-contrast MRI was performed using a 1.5-T MRI system, DCE-MRI was performed four times following intravenous administration of contrast medium. We set the volumes of interest (VOIs) on the tumor and normal mammary gland and obtained the SIs in these VOIs. We calculated the entropy (EPY) in the pre-contrast (EPY0) and

Optimal embedding for shape indexing in medical image databases.

This paper addresses the problem of indexing shapes in medical image databases. Shapes of organs are often indicative of disease, making shape similarity queries important in medical image databases. Mathematically, shapes with landmarks belong to shape spaces which are curved manifolds with a well defined metric. The challenge in shape indexing is to index data in such curved spaces. One natural indexing scheme is to use metric trees, but metric trees are prone to inefficiency. This paper proposes a more efficient alternative. We show that it is possible to optimally embed finite sets of shap

Thalamo-cortical network pathology in idiopathic generalized epilepsy: insights from MRI-based morphometric correlation analysis.

Epileptic activity underlying idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) is related to abnormal thalamo-cortical interactions. Our purpose was to map in vivo the organization of the thalamo-cortical network in IGE. We measured cortical thickness and thalamic volumes on MRI in 23 IGE patients with generalized tonic-clonic seizures only and 46 healthy controls. Significant correlations between thalamic volumes and cortical thickness were interpreted as thalamo-cortical network connections. In controls, thickness of frontal, limbic, and occipital regions was positively correlated with the thalamic vol

Comparison of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional acquisition for 18F-FDG PET oncology studies performed on an LSO-based scanner.

UNLABELLED: Three-dimensional (3D) PET acquisition has the potential to reduce image noise but the advantage of 3D PET for studies outside the brain has not been well established. To compare the performance of 2-dimensional (2D) and 3D acquisition for whole-body (18)F-FDG applications, a series of patient studies were performed using a lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO)-based tomograph. METHODS: Comparative 2D and 3D images were acquired for 27 oncology patients using an LSO-based tomograph. Data acquisition (350-650 keV, 6 ns) started 99 +/- 12 min (mean +/- SD) after injection of 624 +/- 76 MB

New automated fluoroscopic systems for pediatric applications.

Pediatric patients are at higher risk to the adverse effects from exposure to ionizing radiation than adults. The smaller sizes of the anatomy and the reduced X-ray attenuation of the tissues provide special challenges. The goal of this effort is to investigate strategies for pediatric fluoroscopy in order to minimize the radiation exposure to these individuals, while maintaining effective diagnostic image quality. Modern fluoroscopy systems are often entirely automated and computer controlled. In this paper, various selectable and automated modes are examined to determine the influence of the

Tumor sensitive matching flow: A variational method to detecting and segmenting perihepatic and perisplenic ovarian cancer metastases on contrast-enhanced abdominal CT.

Accurate automated segmentation and detection of ovarian cancer metastases may improve the diagnosis and prognosis of women with ovarian cancer. In this paper, we focus on an important subset of ovarian cancer metastases that spread to the surface of the liver and spleen. Automated ovarian cancer metastasis detection and segmentation are very challenging problems to solve. These metastases have a wide variety of shapes and intensity values similar to that of the liver, spleen and adjacent soft tissues. To address these challenges, this paper presents a variational approach, called tumor sensit

Validation of an in-silico modelling platform for outcome prediction in spring assisted posterior vault expansion.

BACKGROUND: Spring-Assisted Posterior Vault Expansion has been adopted at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, UK to treat raised intracranial pressure in patients affected by syndromic craniosynostosis, a congenital calvarial anomaly which causes premature fusion of skull sutures. This procedure aims at normalising head shape and augmenting intracranial volume by means of metallic springs which expand the back portion of the skull. The aim of this study is to create and validate a 3D numerical model able to predict the outcome of spring cranioplasty in patients affected by syndr

Comparison of m-mode echocardiographic left ventricular mass measured using digital and strip chart readings: the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological and clinical studies frequently use echocardiography to measure LV wall thicknesses and chamber dimension for estimating quantitative measures of LV mass. While echocardiographic M-mode LV images have traditionally been measured using hand-held calipers and strip-chart paper tracings, digitized M-mode LV image measurements made directly on the computer screen using electronic calipers have become standard practice. We sought to determine if systematic differences in LV mass occur between the two methods by comparing LV mass measured from simultaneous M-mode strip ch

Quantitative techniques in 18FDG PET scanning in oncology.

Aging is an essential milestone that governments worldwide must plan for. At a global level, Japan currently has the highest share of population older than 65 years. Thus, the Japanese experience may be a useful guide to other countries as they consider their policies. Elderly individuals living alone encounter many challenges typically not faced by those living in a multiperson household. Nutrition status and diet are 2 such challenges, both of which are crucial determinants of health and well-being. The health and nutrition statuses as well as some other factors in elderly individuals living

Change in upper airway geometry between upright and supine position during tidal nasal breathing.

BACKGROUND: As the upper airway is the most important limiting factor for the deposition of inhalation medication in the lower airways, it is interesting to assess how its morphology varies between different postures. The goal of this study is to compare the upper airway morphology and functionality of healthy volunteers in the upright and supine positions during tidal nasal breathing and to search for baseline indicators for these changes. This is done by performing three-dimensional measurements on computed tomography (CT) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. METHODS: This prospe
