Bone mineral metabolism and its relationship to kidney disease in a residential care home population: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Institutionalized older people have a high risk of bone fractures due to osteoporosis. In addition, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is highly prevalent in older people living in residential homes. Secondary hyperparathyroidism, poor calcium intake and deficiency of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D may lead to decreased bone mass in people with CKD. The present cross-sectional study assessed the relationship between markers of bone mineral metabolism and kidney function in a residential care home population. METHODS: Older subjects were recruited from residential care homes and kidney function

Immunohistochemical localization of LIM mineralization protein 1 in pulp-dentin complex of human teeth with normal and pathologic conditions.

LIM mineralization protein 1 (LMP-1) is an essential positive regulator of osteoblast differentiation and maturation and bone formation. However, the expression and distribution of LMP-1 in human teeth are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to detect the expression of LMP-1 in normal healthy human teeth and human teeth with various pathologic conditions. LMP-1 expression was determined by immunohistochemistry in all of the samples including 12 healthy teeth, 10 teeth with caries, 12 teeth with pulpitis, and 4 teeth with pulp calcification. We found that LMP-1 was expressed primarily in

Role of cinacalcet in management of mineral bone disorder in chronic kidney disease (control of calcium, phosphorus and parathyroid hormone).

The management of hemodialysis patients with chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder includes treatment to control levels of calcium, phosphorus and parathyroid hormone, so as to prevent bone and soft-tissue complications. Recently, pleiotropic effects of active vitamin D have attracted much attention, and its effect on outcome has also gained recognition. However, administration of active vitamin D may cause hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. Now, the use of a novel class of drugs, cinacalcet hydrochloride, has been proposed as a strategy to reduce parathyroid hormone secretion, while

[Analysis of effects of salt stress on absorption and accumulation of mineral elements in Elymus spp. using atomic absorption spectrophotometer].

Salinization contributes significantly to soil degradation and the growth and survival of plants. A high level of salts imposes both ionic and osmotic stresses on plants, resulting in an excessive accumulation of sodium (Na) in plant tissues. Na toxicity disrupts the uptake of soil nutrients. Plant uptake and absorption of macro-elements under salt stress have been studied in plants, but there is little literature addressing the effect of salt stress on plant accumulation and absorption of micro-elements. Species in Elymus genus are among the most important forage plants on high-salinity soils

Bone mineral density deficits in survivors of childhood cancer: long-term follow-up guidelines and review of the literature.

The development of curative therapy for most pediatric malignancies has produced a growing population of childhood cancer survivors who are at increased risk for a variety of health problems resulting from their cancer or its treatment. Because of the fact that many treatment-related sequelae may not become clinically apparent until the survivor attains maturity or begins to age, the ability of primary care providers to anticipate late effects of treatment is essential for providing timely interventions that prevent or correct these sequelae and their adverse effects on quality of life. Sorption and desorption of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn by a Fibric Histosol and its organo-mineral fraction.

It has often been stated that the contribution of soil organic matter (OM) to the sorption of heavy metals can be evaluated using the surface horizon of a Histosol as typical of soil organic matter. However, components of Histosols other than organic matter, such as clay minerals and Fe or Mn oxides, can also sorb heavy metals. In this work we compared the heavy metal sorption and desorption behaviour of a Fibric Histosol H horizon with that of its organo-mineral fraction (OMF, defined as the fraction of wet particle size <100 microm) in experiments in which Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were sorb…

Effect of platelet-rich plasma on the healing of intra-bony defects treated with a natural bone mineral and a collagen membrane.

BACKGROUND: Regenerative periodontal therapy with a combination of platelet-rich plasma (PRP)+a natural bone mineral (NBM)+guided tissue regeneration (GTR) has been shown to result in significantly higher probing depth reductions and clinical attachment-level gains compared with treatment with open flap debridement alone. However, at present, it is unknown to what extent the use of PRP may additionally enhance the clinical outcome of the therapy compared with treatment with NBM+GTR. AIM: To clinically compare treatment of deep intra-bony defects with NBM+PRP+GTR with NBM+GTR. MATERIAL AND ME

[Impaired bone mineralization in calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) knockout mice : the physiological action of CaSR in bone microenvironments].

Calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR), whose expressions in the parathyroid and kidney are important for the homeostasis of extracellular calcium ion, is also expressed in chondrocytes and osteoblasts, in which the receptor suppression is linked to impaired mineralization. Unexpected observation of rickets in CaSR knockout mice amid a plenty of calcium ion under hyperparathyroidism seemed compatible with the above findings. On the other hand, constitutive activity of osteoblast CaSR enhances bone turnover and promotes loss of cancellous bone. These findings suggest that CaSR activation in chondrocyt

Mineral metabolism and arterial functions in end-stage renal disease: potential role of 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency.

In ESRD, arterial function is abnormal, characterized by decreased capacitive function (arterial stiffening) and reduced conduit function, shown by diminished flow-mediated dilation (FMD). The pathophysiology of these abnormalities is not clear, and this cross-sectional study analyzed possible relationships among arterial alterations and cardiovascular risk factors, including mineral metabolism parameters, such as serum parathormone, and vitamin D "nutritional" and "hormonal" status by measuring serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D(3)] and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) [1,25(OH)(2)D(3)] levels.
