Inflammation of the choroid plexus in progressive multiple sclerosis: accumulation of granulocytes and T cells.

The choroid plexus (CP) is strategically located between the peripheral blood and the cerebrospinal fluid, and is involved in the regulation of central nervous system (CNS) homeostasis. In multiple sclerosis (MS), demyelination and inflammation occur in the CNS. While experimental animal models of MS pointed to the CP as a key route for immune cell invasion of the CNS, little is known about the distribution of immune cells in the human CP during progressive phases of MS. Here, we use immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy to explore the main immune cell populations in the CP of progressi…

Coincidental occurance of episodic ataxia and multiple sclerosis: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Episodic ataxia is a clinical condition characterized by episodes of balance and coordination problems that last minutes to hours. It can be inherited or sporadic, and it can be seen sporadically in epilepsy, basilar migraine, multiple sclerosis, vertebrobasilar ischaemia, and labyrinth diseases. METHODS: In this article, we present a case of a patient who had a coincidental occurrence of episodic ataxia type 2 (EA2) and multiple sclerosis (MS) Results: The patient who had a previously unidentified heterozygous mutation in the calcium voltage-gated channel subunit alpha 1 A gene…

Mesenchymal stem cells as a treatment for multiple sclerosis: a focus on experimental animal studies.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive and debilitating neurological condition in which the immune system abnormally attacks the myelin sheath insulating the nerves. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are found in most adult tissues and play a significant systemic role in self-repair. MSCs have promising therapeutic effects in many diseases, such as autoimmune diseases, including MS. MSCs have been tested in MS animal models, such as experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. Other studies have combined other agents with MSCs, genetically modified MSCs, or used culture medium from MSCs. In this r…

Impact of obstructive sleep apnoea on cognitive function in multiple sclerosis: A longitudinal study.

Cognitive impairment (CI) and fatigue are common in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), with well-known profound effects on quality of life. Sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), are also common in MS patients. The presence of CI has previously been shown to strongly correlate with OSA diagnosed using polysomnography in MS. Treatment of OSA has not previously been investigated as a potential modality to improve cognition in MS patients. Therefore, we sought to investigate the potential effects of OSA treatment on both cognitive function and fatigue in MS patients. Twenty-…

Empathy and theory of mind in multiple sclerosis: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BackgroundMultiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Recently, numerous studies have shown that MS disrupts a number of social cognitive abilities, including empathy, theory of mind (ToM), and facial emotion recognition. In contrast to well-documented deficits in the core social cognitive domains of ToM and facial emotion recognition, it is not clear the broad and specific subcomponents of empathy processing affected. In addition, the specific subcomponents of ToM affected in MS are also unclear. The aim of this study is to conduct …
