In vivo cell kinetic measurements in human oesophageal cancer: what can be learned from multiple biopsies?

The importance of intratumour variability of cell kinetics was studied in 60 patients with cancer of the oesophagus. Five biopsies per tumour were taken. The labelling index, S-phase duration and potential doubling time (Tpot) were measured using flow cytometry. The mean Tpot value was 5.56 +/- 4.43 days (+/- 1S.D.) for adenocarcinomas and 4.40 +/- 2.45 days (+/- 1S.D.) for squamous cell carcinomas. These values were statistically significantly different. Although intratumour variation in Tpot measurements occurred, the intertumour variability was more important (P < 0.00001). This feature per

[Clinico-pathologic studies on 143 cases of tonsillar malignancies with special reference to lymphomas].

143 cases of tonsillar malignancies consulted or treated in our hospital during the past 33 years (1958-1991) were studied morphologically and histochemically. There were 126 non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL), 14 squamous cell carcinomas and one each of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, malignant melanoma and histiocytic lymphoma. The results showed that: 1. The ratio of peripheral T-cell and B-cell lymphoma was high (2.08:1), of which the reason is unexplained, 2. Many tonsillar NHLs had been misdiagnosed as undifferentiated carcinomas, poorly differentiated carcinomas or reticular cell sarcomas in the p

A new approach for realizing the "antioncogram".

On the basis of an organoid culture method which allows organoid reorganization and histotypical growth of human carcinomas under in vitro conditions, we propose in the present study an organoid culture assay (OCA) as "antioncogram", i.e., as in vitro model for testing the drug sensitivity and resistance of individual patients' carcinomas previous to clinical chemotherapy. At the beginning of the assay, specimens of human carcinomas are disaggregated to dense single cell suspensions and dropped on a filter sheet at the air-medium interface. Organoid culture nodules develop within several days

De Novo Malignancies after Liver Transplantation: A Multicenter Cohort Study of Incidence, Timing, and Outcomes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: De novo malignancies are an important long-term complication following liver transplantation (LT), driven by chronic immunosuppression and extended post-transplant survival. Understanding patterns by tumor type, timing, and patient characteristics is essential for optimized surveillance. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and temporal trends of de novo neoplasms in LT recipients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 6943 adult LT recipients from 16 Turkish centers were evaluated between 1999 and 2023). Two hundred eight patients with 220 histologically con

Frequent Immunohistochemical Expression of Transcriptional Repressor GATA Binding 1 in Salivary Gland Neoplasms: A Sensitive but Nonspecific Marker.

CONTEXT.—: Salivary gland (SG) neoplasms (SGNs) display considerable immunophenotypic diversity. A significant proportion of SG carcinomas develop metastases, with increased diagnostic difficulty at metastatic sites. Transcriptional repressor GATA binding 1 (TRPS1), a novel immunohistochemical marker for breast cancer, has been found to stain certain SGNs. OBJECTIVE.—: To investigate TRPS1 and SRY-related HMG-box 10 (SOX10) immunoexpression in various SGNs and non-SG carcinomas, head and neck paragangliomas, and head and neck mucosal melanomas. DESIGN.—: TRPS1 immunoreactivity score (IRS) wa

Metastasis of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Larynx to the Right Adrenal Gland-A Case Report.

Background/Objectives: Malignant adrenal tumors comprise both primary adrenal neoplasms and metastatic lesions, with the latter being significantly more common. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the larynx is a prevalent head and neck cancer that typically spreads to the cervical lymph nodes, with distant metastases being rare. Among such metastases, adrenal gland involvement is particularly uncommon, presenting unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The study aimed to explore the progression, diagnostic process, and therapeutic management of a rare case of SCC of the larynx metastasizin

Complete pathologic response after concomitant pembrolizumab and radiotherapy in a patient with pretreated metastatic thymic carcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Thymic carcinoma (TC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy, accounting for approximately 6% of thymic neoplasms. Due to its frequent late-stage diagnosis and poor prognosis, standard treatment typically involves multimodal therapy, including platinum-based chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. However, effective treatment options remain limited, with response rates being unsatisfactory. Recent studies have highlighted the potential of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in treating thymic epithelial tumors, particularly in tumors with high programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) e

Management of Clinically Negative Neck in Early-Stage (T1-2N0) Oral Squamous-Cell Carcinoma (OSCC): Ten Years of a Single Institution's Experience.

Background/Objectives: Oral cavity squamous-cell carcinoma is among the most frequent head and neck neoplasms. Early-stage T1/T2N0 accounts for 40/45% of new diagnoses. Of these, about 30% of cases hide occult metastases in the neck. The management of clinically N0 neck is of paramount importance and is still being debated. Methods: The medical records of patients with a clinical diagnosis of early-stage T1-T2N0 carcinoma of the oral cavity between 2011 and 2021 were retrospectively analysed. The inclusion criteria were complete medical and radiological records, pT1-2 pathology staging, and a

p53 Immunohistochemistry Defines a Subset of Human Papillomavirus-Independent Penile Squamous Cell Carcinomas With Adverse Prognosis.

Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is classified into 2 prognostically distinct types: human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated and HPV-independent. However, the impact of p53 status on prognosis remains controversial. We correlated HPV and p53 status with the prognosis of a large series of patients with PSCC. p53 was analyzed according to a recently described immunohistochemical (IHC) pattern-based framework that includes 2 normal and 4 abnormal patterns and closely correlates with TP53 mutational status. A total of 122 patients with surgically treated PSCC in 3 hospitals were included. Based

Proceedings of the North American Society of Head and Neck Pathology, Los Angeles, CA, March 20, 2022: SWI/SNF-deficient Sinonasal Neoplasms: An Overview.

The pathology of poorly differentiated sinonasal malignancies has been the subject of extensive studies during the last decade, which resulted into significant developments in the definitions and histo-/pathogenetic classification of several entities included in the historical spectrum of "sinonasal undifferentiated carcinomas (SNUC)" and poorly differentiated unclassified carcinomas. In particular, genetic defects leading to inactivation of different protein subunits in the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex have continuously emerged as the major (frequently the only) genetic player driving

Epidemiological Survey of Sinonasal Malignancy in North-East Iran.

INTRODUCTION: Sinonasal malignancies are uncommon neoplasms with several histological subtypes. These malignancies have a poor prognosis and, because of the nonspecific nature of the symptoms, most patients are diagnosed late when the disease is already at an advanced stage. Therefore, most sinonasal malignancies tend to be treated with surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. Understanding the incidence and prevalence of clinical symptoms, pathology, diagnosis, and subsequent prognosis of the disease is important for early diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of patients with a c

Spectrum of Sinonasal Tumors: A 10-year Experience at a Tertiary Care Hospital in North India.

OBJECTIVE: Sinonasal tumors are a highly heterogeneous group of tumors that account for less than 1% of all cancers. Precise diagnosis is essential because the natural history, treatment, and prognosis vary for different neoplasms. We reviewed 610 cases of sinonasal lesions to understand this entity better. METHODS: A total of 610 sinonasal biopsies/specimens were received over a period of 10 years (2004-14). All the samples were processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Special staining for microorganisms and immunohistochemistry were performed where indicated. RESULTS: Benign lesio

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of secondary neoplasms of the thyroid gland: a multi-institutional study of 62 cases.

BACKGROUND: Secondary neoplasms of the thyroid gland (SNTGs) are uncommon, and it is important to recognize them in thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). METHODS: The authors report a cohort of 62 SNTGs from 7 institutions in the United States and Europe. Patients were identified retrospectively by searching through medical records of the respective institutions. All initial diagnoses were rendered by FNAB. RESULTS: SNTGs represented 0.16% of all thyroid FNABs and were more frequent among women (ratio of women to men, 1.2:1.0). The mean patient age was of 59 years (range, 7-84 years)

Self-expanding metal stents in the palliation of neoplasms of the cervical esophagus.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) represent a major advancement in the palliative treatment of dysphagia caused by neoplasms of the esophagus. Malignant cervical stenoses are a challenge for palliative techniques, due to their close relationship with the cricopharynx. METHODOLOGY: Six patients with a malignant stricture of the upper esophagus, within 2 cm of the cricopharyngeal muscle, were treated with a self-expanding metal stent. All patients had a circumferential squamous cell carcinoma histologically proven. Patients were intubated under general anesthesia, and the proc
