Detection and classification of gaseous sulfur compounds by solid electrolyte cyclic voltammetry of cermet sensor array.

Electrochemical sensors composed of a ceramic-metallic (cermet) solid electrolyte are used for the detection of gaseous sulfur compounds SO(2), H(2)S, and CS(2) in a study involving 11 toxic industrial chemical (TIC) compounds. The study examines a sensor array containing four cermet sensors varying in electrode-electrolyte composition, designed to offer selectivity for multiple compounds. The sensors are driven by cyclic voltammetry to produce a current-voltage profile for each analyte. Raw voltammograms are processed by background subtraction of clean air, and the four sensor signals are con

Low-affinity nerve growth factor receptor (p75) in dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and other nonneural tumors: a study of 1,150 tumors and fetal and adult normal tissues.

Low-affinity nerve growth factor receptor (p75) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor family. It may modulate the binding of nerve growth factor (NGF) to the functional high-affinity receptor tyrosine kinase (trk) A. NGF is thought to be responsible for growth, apoptosis, and function of the nervous system. The presence of this receptor (p75) was determined in a large group of neural and nonneural tumors and fetal and adult tissues. One thousand one hundred fifty tumors were analyzed with monoclonal antibody for p75, along with selected normal fetal and adult tissues. Immunoreactiv

Variability of energy metabolism and nuclear T3-receptors within the skeletal muscle tissue of pigs different with respect to the halothane gene.

Energy metabolism of skeletal muscle tissue of pigs growing from approximately 12 to 18 kg (12 homozygous halothane negative, HH; 16 heterozygotes, Hh; 17 homozygous halothane susceptible, hh) was measured in vivo using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Data for intracellular pH, phosphocreatine (PCr), phosphomonoesters (PME), and ATP were analyzed by canonical discriminant analysis, an artificial neural network approach, and analysis of variance. Within the hh pigs, two subpopulations could be distinguished before the application of halothane treatment. Some of the hh pigs ha

The 5-HT4 receptor mediates 5-hydroxytryptamine-induced rise in short circuit current in the human jejunum in vitro.

BACKGROUND: 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is a potent intestinal secretagogue for chloride and a mediator of diarrhea in the carcinoid syndrome. 5-HT-induced chloride secretion is seen as a change in short circuit current (Isc) in muscle-stripped, chambered human jejunum. The aim of this study was to determine which 5-HT receptors mediate a 5-HT-induced change in Isc in the human jejunum. METHODS: Segments of jejunum obtained from patients (n = 23) having obesity surgery were stripped of muscularis, and the mucosal sheets were mounted in flux chambers and short-circuited. By a cumulative method,

Real-Time Classification of Causes of Death Using AI: Sensitivity Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In 2021, the European Union reported >270,000 excess deaths, including >16,000 in Portugal. The Portuguese Directorate-General of Health developed a deep neural network, AUTOCOD, which determines the primary causes of death by analyzing the free text of physicians' death certificates (DCs). Although AUTOCOD's performance has been established, it remains unclear whether its performance remains consistent over time, particularly during periods of excess mortality. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the sensitivity and other performance metrics of AUTOCOD in classifying underlying

ANOS1 variants in a large cohort of Chinese patients with congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

OBJECTIVES: Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) is a rare congenital gonadal dysplasia caused by defects in the synthesis, secretion or signal transduction of hypothalamic gonadotropin releasing hormone. The main manifestations of CHH are delayed or lack puberty, low levels of sex hormones and gonadotropins, and may be accompanied with other clinical phenotypes. Some patients with CHH are also accompanied with anosmia or hyposmia, which is called Kalman syndrome (KS). ANOS1, located on X chromosome, is the first gene associated with CHH in an X-linked recessive manner. This study ai

Durability of Evoked Compound Action Potential (ECAP)-Controlled, Closed-Loop Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) in a Real-World European Chronic Pain Population.

INTRODUCTION: Closed-loop spinal cord stimulation (CL-SCS) is a recently introduced system that records evoked compound action potentials (ECAPs) from the spinal cord elicited by each stimulation pulse and uses this information to automatically adjust the stimulation strength in real time, known as ECAP-controlled SCS. This innovative system compensates for fluctuations in the distance between the epidural leads and the spinal cord by maintaining the neural response (ECAP) at a predetermined target level. This data collection study was designed to assess the performance of the first CL-SCS sys
