Using Deep Learning with Convolutional Neural Network Approach to Identify the Invasion Depth of Endometrial Cancer in Myometrium Using MR Images: A Pilot Study.

Myometrial invasion affects the prognosis of endometrial cancer. However, discrepancies exist between pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging staging and post-operative pathological staging. This study aims to validate the accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) for detecting the depth of myometrial invasion using a deep learning technique on magnetic resonance images. We obtained 4896 contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images (T1w) and T2-weighted images (T2w) from 72 patients who were diagnosed with surgico-pathological stage I endometrial carcinoma. We used the images from 24 patients (33.3%)

Prediction of age-related macular degeneration disease using a sequential deep learning approach on longitudinal SD-OCT imaging biomarkers.

We propose a hybrid sequential prediction model called "Deep Sequence", integrating radiomics-engineered imaging features, demographic, and visual factors, with a recursive neural network (RNN) model in the same platform to predict the risk of exudation within a future time-frame in non-exudative AMD eyes. The proposed model provides scores associated with risk of exudation in the short term (within 3 months) and long term (within 21 months), handling challenges related to variability of OCT scan characteristics and the size of the training cohort. We used a retrospective clinical trial datase

Hollow Au/Polypyrrole Capsules to Form Porous and Neural Network-Like Nanofibrous Film for Wearable, Super-Rapid, and Ultrasensitive NH3 Sensor at Room Temperature.

Wearable conducting polymer-based NH3 sensors are highly desirable in real-time environmental monitoring and human health protection but still a challenge for their relatively long response/recovery time and moderate sensitivity at room temperature. Herein, we present an effective route to fulfill this challenge by constructing porous and neural network-like Au/polypyrrole (Au/PPy) electrospun nanofibrous film with hollow capsular units for NH3 sensor. Taking the unique architecture and synergistic effect between Au and PPy, our sensor exhibits not only super-rapid response/recovery time (both

Detection of transient neurotransmitter response using personalized neural networks.

Measurement of stimulus-induced dopamine release and other types of transient neurotransmitter response (TNR) from dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) images typically suffers from limited detection sensitivity and high false positive (FP) rates. Measurement of TNR of a voxel-level can be particularly problematic due to high image noise. In this work, we perform voxel-level TNR detection using artificial neural networks (ANN) and compare their performance to previously used standard statistical tests. Different ANN architectures were trained and tested using simulated and real human PET

Demographic model for inheritable cardiac disease.

The cardiac muscle proteins, generating and regulating energy transduction during a heartbeat, assemble in the sarcomere into a cyclical machine repetitively translating actin relative to myosin filaments. Myosin is the motor transducing ATP free energy into actin movement against resisting force. Cardiac myosin binding protein C (mybpc3) regulates shortening velocity probably by transient N-terminus binding to actin while its C-terminus strongly binds the myosin filament. Inheritable heart disease associated mutants frequently modify these proteins involving them in disease mechanisms. Nonsyn

A deep survival analysis method based on ranking.

Survival analyses of populations and the establishment of prognoses for individual patients are important activities in the practice of medicine. Standard survival models, such as the Cox proportional hazards model, require extensive feature engineering or prior knowledge to model at an individual level. Some survival analysis models can avoid these problems by using machine learning extended the CPH model, and higher performance has been reported. In this paper, we propose an innovative loss function that is defined as the sum of an extended mean squared error loss and a pairwise ranking loss

Convolutional Neural Networks for Recognition of Lymphoblast Cell Images.

This paper presents the recognition for WHO classification of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) subtypes. The two ALL subtypes considered are T-lymphoblastic leukaemia (pre-T) and B-lymphoblastic leukaemia (pre-B). They exhibit various characteristics which make it difficult to distinguish between subtypes from their mature cells, lymphocytes. In a common approach, handcrafted features must be well designed for this complex domain-specific problem. With deep learning approach, handcrafted feature engineering can be eliminated because a deep learning method can automate this task through the

Applications of Machine Learning Methods to Genomic Selection in Breeding Wheat for Rust Resistance.

New methods and algorithms are being developed for predicting untested phenotypes in schemes commonly used in genomic selection (GS). The prediction of disease resistance in GS has its own peculiarities: a) there is consensus about the additive nature of quantitative adult plant resistance (APR) genes, although epistasis has been found in some populations; b) rust resistance requires effective combinations of major and minor genes; and c) disease resistance is commonly measured based on ordinal scales (e.g., scales from 1-5, 1-9, etc.). Machine learning (ML) is a field of computer science that

ISSLS PRIZE IN BIOENGINEERING SCIENCE 2017: Automation of reading of radiological features from magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of the lumbar spine without human intervention is comparable with an expert radiologist.

STUDY DESIGN: Investigation of the automation of radiological features from magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of the lumbar spine. OBJECTIVE: To automate the process of grading lumbar intervertebral discs and vertebral bodies from MRIs. MR imaging is the most common imaging technique used in investigating low back pain (LBP). Various features of degradation, based on MRIs, are commonly recorded and graded, e.g., Modic change and Pfirrmann grading of intervertebral discs. Consistent scoring and grading is important for developing robust clinical systems and research. Automation facilitates this

Neuro-fuzzy models for hand movements induced by functional electrical stimulation in able-bodied and hemiplegic subjects.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) may be effective as a therapeutic treatment for improving functional reaching and grasping. Upper-limb FES models for predicting joint torques/angles from stimulation parameters can be useful to support the iterative design and development of neuroprostheses. Most such models focused on shoulder or elbow joints and were defined for fixed electrode configurations. This work proposes the use of a Recurrent Fuzzy Neural Network (RFNN) for modeling FES induced wrist, thumb, and finger movements based on surface multi-field electrodes and kinematic data from

Analysis of connectivity in NeuCube spiking neural network models trained on EEG data for the understanding of functional changes in the brain: A case study on opiate dependence treatment.

The paper presents a methodology for the analysis of functional changes in brain activity across different conditions and different groups of subjects. This analysis is based on the recently proposed NeuCube spiking neural network (SNN) framework and more specifically on the analysis of the connectivity of a NeuCube model trained with electroencephalography (EEG) data. The case study data used to illustrate this method is EEG data collected from three groups-subjects with opiate addiction, patients undertaking methadone maintenance treatment, and non-drug users/healthy control group. The propo

Network models predict that reduced excitatory fluctuations can give rise to hippocampal network hyper-excitability in MeCP2-null mice.

Rett syndrome is a severe pediatric neurological disorder caused by loss of function mutations within the gene encoding methyl CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2). Although MeCP2 is expressed near ubiquitously, the primary pathophysiology of Rett syndrome stems from impairments of nervous system function. One alteration within different regions of the MeCP2-deficient brain is the presence of hyper-excitable network responses. In the hippocampus, such responses exist despite there being an overall decrease in spontaneous excitatory drive within the network. In this study, we generated and used mathem

Artificial neural network aided non-invasive grading evaluation of hepatic fibrosis by duplex ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are widely studied for evaluating diseases. This paper discusses the intelligence mode of an ANN in grading the diagnosis of liver fibrosis by duplex ultrasonogaphy. METHODS: 239 patients who were confirmed as having liver fibrosis or cirrhosis by ultrasound guided liver biopsy were investigated in this study. We quantified ultrasonographic parameters as significant parameters using a data optimization procedure applied to an ANN. 179 patients were typed at random as the training group; 60 additional patients were consequently enrolled as the vali

Parameters optimization of rice husk ash (RHA)/CaO/CeO2 sorbent for predicting SO2/NO sorption capacity using response surface and neural network models.

In this work, the application of response surface and neural network models in predicting and optimizing the preparation variables of RHA/CaO/CeO(2) sorbent towards SO(2)/NO sorption capacity was investigated. The sorbents were prepared according to central composite design (CCD) with four independent variables (i.e. hydration period, RHA/CaO ratio, CeO(2) loading and the use of RHA(raw) or pretreated RHA(600 degrees C) as the starting material). Among all the variables studied, the amount of CeO(2) loading had the largest effect. The response surface models developed from CCD was effective in

Body schema learning for robotic manipulators from visual self-perception.

We present an approach to learning the kinematic model of a robotic manipulator arm from scratch using self-observation via a single monocular camera. We introduce a flexible model based on Bayesian networks that allows a robot to simultaneously identify its kinematic structure and to learn the geometrical relationships between its body parts as a function of the joint angles. Further, we show how the robot can monitor the prediction quality of its internal kinematic model and how to adapt it when its body changes-for example due to failure, repair, or material fatigue. In experiments carried

Radial basis function classifiers to help in the diagnosis of the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome from nocturnal oximetry.

The aim of this study is to assess the ability of radial basis function (RBF) classifiers as an assistant tool for the diagnosis of the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). A total of 187 subjects suspected of suffering from OSAS were available for our research. The initial population was divided into training, validation and test sets for deriving and testing our neural classifiers. We used nonlinear features from nocturnal oxygen saturation (SaO(2)) to perform patients' classification. We evaluated three different RBF construction techniques based on the following algorithms: k-means (K

Neural observer based spasticity quantification during therapeutic muscle stimulation.

Repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (RPMS) is an innovative approach in treatment of central paresis, e.g. after stroke. The main goals of our current research are the improvement of the therapeutic effect by inducing closed loop controlled movements on the one hand, and the objective assessment of the RPMS therapy on the other hand. One important parameter that allows the evaluation of the therapy progress and that gives insight in neurological processes is the level of spasticity. Current methods to evaluate spasticity are not completely objective and error-prone. This paper presents

Diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss with neural networks versus logistic regression modeling of distortion product otoacoustic emissions.

We investigated whether modeling with artificial neural networks or logistic regression of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE), across diverse frequencies, may achieve an accurate diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) of cochlear origin. 256 ears (90 with SNHL and 166 with normal hearing) were evaluated with pure-tone audiometry, impedance audiometry, speech audiometry and DPOAE. Ears were split into training (n = 176) and validation (n = 80) sets. Input variables included gender, age, examination time, DPOAE intensity at F(2) frequencies 593, 937, 1906, 3812 and 6031 Hz,
