Diagnosis and management of vasovagal syncope and dysautonomia.

Vasovagal syncope is a condition better known as neurocardiogenic or neurally mediated syncope. Dysautonomic syncope is the irregular neuroautonomic response during the body's attempt to maintain homeostasis. Both types of syncope are associated with orthostatic hypotension and are nonlethal. The underlying pathophysiology manifests the vast symptoms suffered by the individual. Research continues to develop new markers to improve diagnostic testing and therapies for treatment. Advanced practice nurses now have a new tool with Head-Up Tilt Training Programs to offer the patients who suffer from

Cauda equina syndrome. Implications for the orthopaedic nurse in a clinical setting.

Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a presentation of signs and symptoms that indicate nerve compression involving one or more of the nerve roots in the lumbar spine. The Clinical Nurse Specialist working in a general orthopaedic practice must become familiar with the presentation of CES to appropriately assess the patient and alert the physician. Prompt and accurate care of the patient is critical when cauda equina syndrome is suspected to minimize permanent nerve damage. This article describes the syndrome, its signs and symptoms, basic triage techniques, plan of care, and recovery for the patien

Assessment and nonpharmacological management for patients with cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome: a best practice implementation project.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome (CACS) is a common multifactorial syndrome, which affects up to 80% patients with advanced cancer. At present, evidence to support the benefit of pharmacological intervention in the management of CACS is limited. Patients would benefit from standard procedures for early assessment and identification of cancer anorexia-cachexia, and using nonpharmacological strategies to manage patients with CACS. This best practice implementation project aimed to implement an evidence-based practice in assessing and managing patients with CACS, thereby i

Effectiveness of an educational intervention to reduce the burden on home care workers and facilitating factors: A pre-post study.

AIMS: To determine if a training program, aimed at home care workers, for caring for the elderly and for providing their own self-care is effective for reducing workers burden in the short and long terms and to identify the associated variables that can influence burden across 12 months. BACKGROUND: An increasing number of older adults rely on home care workers as a complement to the care received from family caregivers. However, these workers do not usually have any formal training in nursing care and occasionally suffer burden. DESIGN: A pre- and post-intervention study with a follow-up at

Standardising Emollient Prescribing in Critically Ill Patients: A Quality Improvement Project.

Introduction Critically ill patients are vulnerable to skin dryness, irritation, and skin barrier impairment due to factors associated with critical illness and prolonged intensive care admission. Consistent skin care and the use of a standardised emollient may support a more uniform approach to skin barrier protection. However, variation in prescribing and product selection may result in inconsistent practice. This quality improvement project aimed primarily to increase prescribing of the locally recommended standard emollient, thereby reducing variation in product selection and standardising

Systematic review of aerosol therapy in invasive mechanical ventilation: Effective device positioning and the role of nurse.

INTRODUCTION: Aerosol therapy during invasive mechanical ventilation is a common practice in intensive care units, however, its effectiveness is highly dependent on technical factors. Variability in device positioning and nursing technique produces substantial differences between the nominal dose and the fraction of drug that reaches the lungs, underscoring the need for standardized placement to enhance both safety and therapeutic efficiency. OBJECTIVE: To examine recent scientific evidence to determine the optimal positioning of aerosol delivery devices within the ventilator circuit, thereby

Imprinted Arousal Pattern (IAP): A Transdiagnostic Clinical Reasoning for Compulsive Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Compulsive behaviors across psychiatric diagnoses often recur despite diagnostic clarity, pharmacologic stabilization, and structured psychotherapy. Substance use disorders and behavioral addictions demonstrate high relapse rates, particularly under stress, while many patients describe not a pursuit of pleasure but an inability to tolerate stillness, boredom, or emotional deadness. Although the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) provides descriptive reliability and the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework advances dime
