Development of an instrument for assessing workstyle in checkout cashier work (BAsIK).

Checkout cashier work consists of handling a large number of items during a work shift, which implies repetitive movements of the shoulders, arms and hands/wrists, and a high work rate. The work is associated with a high prevalence of disorders in the neck and upper extremity. The concept of workstyle explains how ergonomic and psychosocial factors interact in the development of work-related upper extremity disorders. The aim of the project was to develop an instrument for the occupational health services to be used in the efforts to prevent upper extremity disorders in checkout cashier work. …

Bus drivers' exposure to bullying at work: an occupation-specific approach.

The present study employs an occupation-specific approach to examine bus drivers' exposure to bullying and their trait anger, job engagement, job satisfaction and turnover intentions. A total of 1,023 bus drivers from a large public transport organization participated in the study. The findings show that bus driving can be a high risk occupation with regard to bullying, since 70% of the bus drivers had experienced one or more acts typical of bullying during the last six months. As many as 11% defined themselves as victims of bullying, 33% of whom (i.e. 3.6% of the total sample) see themselves

[Acquired musculoskeletal dysfunction syndromes in workers in the light of epidemiological studies].

Acquired musculoskeletal dysfunction syndromes (overload syndromes) that cause limitation of the system efficiency belong nowadays to the most serious problems in the medical care of workers. The etiology of overload syndromes is multifactorial, which means that occupational factors constitute only one of many causes fostering the development of those disorders. Occupational factors which increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders include physical factors related to the work environment or the way the work is performed, such as body posture, value of exerted forces, movement repetitiveness

Is driving a car a risk for Legionnaires' disease?

Legionnaires' disease (LD) is a major cause of severe community-acquired pneumonia but the source and mode of transmission are not always apparent, especially in sporadic cases. We hypothesized that LD can be acquired from the air-conditioning systems of motor cars. Swabs were taken from the evaporator compartments of the air-conditioning system of scrapped cars. Healthy subjects who were mainly employees of regional transportation companies were tested for antibody to Legionella pneumophila serogroups 1-6; they also completed a questionnaire. Legionella species were detected in 11/22 scrapped

Percutaneous injuries among dental professionals in Washington State.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous exposure incidents facilitate transmission of bloodborne pathogens such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV). This study was conducted to identify the circumstances and equipment related to percutaneous injuries among dental professionals. METHODS: We used workers' compensation claims submitted to the Department of Labor and Industries State Fund during a 7-year period (1995 through 2001) in Washington State for this study. We used the statement submitted by the injured worker on the workers' compensation claim for

An epidemiological study of the magnitude and consequences of work related violence: the Minnesota Nurses' Study.

AIMS: To identify the magnitude of and potential risk factors for violence within a major occupational population. METHODS: Comprehensive surveys were sent to 6300 Minnesota licensed registered (RNs) and practical (LPNs) nurses to collect data on physical and non-physical violence for the prior 12 months. Re-weighting enabled adjustment for potential biases associated with non-response, accounting for unknown eligibility. RESULTS: From the 78% responding, combined with non-response rate information, respective adjusted rates per 100 persons per year (95% CI) for physical and non-physical vio

Natural rubber latex-related occupational asthma: association with interventions and glove changes over time.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to natural rubber latex (NRL) has been recognized as a cause of occupational asthma (OA), especially among health care workers (HCWs) associated with use of gloves. Little or no population-based data are available which chart the changes over time in the number of cases of OA as this problem was increasingly recognized and then interventions instituted. METHODS: We obtained the numbers of allowed asthma claims with exposure to latex by year in the province of Ontario, Canada from the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board; details of the cases from the largest teach

Perceived psychological stress and upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders.

This report presents data exploring the relationship between perceived psychological stress and several variables implicated in the etiology of upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders (UECTDs). The sample was 354 workers from three different manufacturing companies. The primary job exposure for the subjects was that they were engaged in jobs that involved repetitious movements of the upper extremities, primarily of the hands and arms. Data collection included a detailed health history, a comprehensive physical examination of the upper extremities, limited electrodiagnostic testing, Cohen's

Fatigue among Israeli industrial employees.

We examined the prevalence of fatigue and its association with occupational conditions and health-related habits in 3785 industrial employees of six industrial sectors to define modifiable factors. The factors examined included complaints of fatigue during and after work, an ergonomic evaluation of employees' workstations, demographic characteristics, and health-related habits. Eighteen percent of the subjects complained of severe fatigue frequently or very frequently. We were able to identify two major modifiable variables that were independently associated with the presence of fatigue. Logis

Sick building syndrome: acute illness among office workers--the role of building ventilation, airborne contaminants and work stress.

Outbreaks of acute illness among office workers have been reported with increasing frequency during the past 10-15 years. In the majority of cases, hazardous levels of airborne contaminants have not been found. Generally, health complaints have involved mucous membrane and respiratory tract irritation and nonspecific symptoms such as headache and fatigue. Except for rare examples of hypersensitivity pneumonitis related to microbiologic antigens, there have been no reports of serious morbidity or permanent sequelae. However, the anxiety, lost work time, decreased productivity and resources spen

Otologic referral criteria.

Otologic referral is an important component of an industrial hearing conservation program. Recent federal regulations in this area are reviewed, and suggestions for implementation of otologic referral are made. Criteria for otologic referral must be distinguished from a definition of significant threshold shift for internal program action. Test-retest variability is higher in industrial than in clinical settings, and unduly stringent definitions of significant threshold shift will result in many spuriously identified cases. The American Council of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery has prop

Hearing in an ambulance paramedic population.

Ambulance cab noise levels during siren use, hearing levels of 56 ambulance paramedics, and hearing acuity changes of four ambulance paramedics during a 14-year period were examined to determine whether environmental noise levels are sufficient to produce hearing loss, to determine if hearing loss is indeed present in ambulance paramedics, and to determine if ambulance paramedics lose heaing acuity at rates faster than "normal" peers. Ambulance cab noise levels during siren use were intense (mean of 102.5 dBA in a common conditions), well above the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
