Pathomorphology of the liver has been reviewed in twelve German infants with chronic exogenic copper intoxication. Eight cases suffered from florid Indian childhood cirrhosis. Seven of these children died because of liver failure. One child received liver transplantation. The radiation dose delivered at small intestinal biopsies in children was investigated in a national study engaging 42 of 43 paediatric departments performing small intestinal biopsies. Measurements were performed with a thermoluminescence system at 257 biopsies. The results show a considerable variation of both duration of fluoroscopy (range 2-660 s; department medians) and radiation dose (range 0.1-14 mSv; department medians). During 13 years, 47 infants were treated for mechanical ileus resulting from intestinal obstruction located proximally to the coecum (duodenal obstruction, malrotation, jejuno-ileal obstruction and meconium ileus). Of the 355 patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) examined at the Mayo Clinic, 49 had died (9 of causes other than TSC). We attempted to determine what pattern of organ involvement occurred most often in the 40 patients who died of TSC. We have reviewed in a retrospective study 38 children treated in our Hospital, during the last seven years, because of non congenital gall-bladder disease. The diagnosis established were cholelithiasis 58 for 100, hydrops 26 for 100, acalculous cholecystitis 13 for 100 and hemobilia in one child. Cholelithiasis was more frequent in females at a rate of 2/1. Just the opposite incidence was found for acalculous gall-bladder pathology. We report the results of using 83 expanding intramedullary rods in 24 children with osteogenesis imperfecta after a mean follow-up of five years three months. In all, 62% of the rods have expanded after one primary operation. Thirty-four additional operations were necessary; 11 for the correction of rotation or angulation deformities and 23 for revision of the rod or T-piece. All these revisions were successful. Until 1980, 300 cases of gastric volvulus had been reported in the literature. Of these only 50 had presented in children. The disease is considered rare. We reviewed our experience at Sainte-Justine, in the last 30 years and found 10 cases, all of which diagnosed since 1980. Four patients were under one year of age. Eighty-five infants and children found to have microcephaly had computed tomographic (CT) brain scans performed. A greater degree of microcephaly correlated with the finding of atrophy or ventricular dilation on CT scan. Patients who had known preceding destructive brain insults had the highest incidence of abnormal findings on scans (20/22). The prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was studied in 3020 pregnant Saudi women. All the sera of 119 (3.9%) HBsAg-positive asymptomatic carrier mothers were titrated for HBsAg and investigated for hepatitis Be antigen (e-Ag) and its antibody (anti-e-Ag).
