BACKGROUND: While medical costs of chickenpox have been researched, little is known about indirect costs. Understanding total costs is important for decisions about vaccination. This study estimated the value of lost productivity of adults missing work to care for children with chickenpox.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: It comprised an international literature review, an online survey of 1,526 parents of children aged 1-11 years, and computation of indirect costs of chickenpox in the UK. The survey covered chickenpox episodes amongst respondents' children, time children took off school/nursery,

PURPOSE: In Australia, adolescents are scheduled to receive vaccinations against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, human papillomavirus, and meningococcal disease, delivered via school vaccination programs and general practitioners (GPs). Public health measures implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic impacted uptake of some adolescent age-based vaccinations. Limited information is available on parents' approaches to vaccinating their adolescent children during the pandemic. We aimed to explore parents' experiences of adolescent age-based vaccinations during the pandemic, and factors the

Parents with advanced cancer and their dependent children experience high psychological distress, decreased quality of life, and decreased family functioning due to cancer-related concerns. Dying concerns are defined as fluctuating thoughts or feelings that are conscious or unconscious about an anticipated and approaching death that is attributed to a palliative/terminal diagnosis. This study used Gadamer's phenomenological approach to gain a shared understanding of the perspectives of the parents with advanced cancer about dying concerns, family life before and after advanced cancer diagnosis

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers of children with leukemia can be emotionally and psychiatrically vulnerable when facing difficult treatment decisions (e.g., chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation, transplantation). A common behavioral manifestation of decisional conflict is the verbalized expression of uncertainty about which medical treatment plan to take. The study aims to examine the associations between decisional conflict, mastery, and depressive symptoms among parental caregivers of children with leukemia in China. It explored the mediating role of mastery in the relationship.

The perceptions of parents/caregivers regarding their children's oral health can influence the standard of care and decision-making regarding oral health. The children's perspective on their own oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) may differ from the parents/caregivers' views. This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the agreement between the perceptions of parents/caregivers and schoolchildren regarding OHRQoL. It was conducted with a sample of children between 8 and 11 years old and their parents/caregivers from Pelotas. Children answered the Child Perceptions Questionnaire 8-10

PURPOSE: In recent years, minimal intervention procedures (MIPs) for treating dental caries in children have stood out as an innovative method. Nevertheless, the treatment decision should be based on scientific evidence, professional expertise, and parents' preference/acceptance. Evaluating the acceptance of MIPs by parents is an essential factor, but little information is available on what guides this preference.
METHODS: This scoping review aims to synthesize the evidence on parents'/caregivers' acceptance of MIP for managing cavitated caries lesions in children. A search was performed in t

Parents may influence children's intake of sweets and sugar-sweetened beverages through their feeding styles. This study prospectively assessed the association between parental feeding styles and caries risk in preschool children. In November and December 2021, we recruited 1181 preschool children aged 3-4 years in Guangzhou, China, and then conducted a follow-up visit after 15 months. The children were examined for dental caries, and their parents answered the Chinese version of the Parental Feeding Style Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. At baseline, 'cont

The patients' fear of the dentist plays an important role in the everyday life of a dentist. The anxiety level of children in relation to dental treatment/visits and to their parents' dental fear was evaluated in three different centers. Assessments of a modified CFSS-DS (mCFSS-DS) were performed by questionnaire with 60 children and their parents. Children's dmft/DMFT scores, age and gender were evaluated in relation to the parents' perception of their child's anxiety levels. For statistical evaluation, Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon tests as well as Spearman's correlation coefficient (Spearman)

This study investigates whether and how parent's cooperation affects child's cooperation, and whether that differs between children with/without autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The experiment involved a cooperative key-pressing task completed first by parent-parent dyads and then by parent-child dyads, meanwhile brain activity in the right frontal-parietal cortex of dyad partners was measured synchronously. The results showed the following: ASD children exhibited performance comparable to those of their peers, as was the level of brain synchronization with their parents, which was mainly due t

PURPOSE: Inadequate participation of Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) and parents are well-established barriers of transition. Shifts in roles are mandatory with increasing responsibilities for AYAs and decreasing involvement of parents in care. This study explores the shifts in roles of AYAs and their parents and its association with the subjective experience of transition.
METHODS: We conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with AYAs living with Cystic Fibrosis and parents. Participants were recruited through patient organizations via convenience sampling and questioned on which ro

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience impairments in their social interactions, language communication, and stereotypical patterns of behavior. Parents of children with ASD experience higher levels of stress and more depression and anxiety than parents of children with other disabilities or typically developing children. Parents of children with disabilities develop coping strategies to counteract the stresses associated with raising a child with special needs. Understanding coping strategies to help counteract the stresses associated with parenting a child with A…

In this study, we aimed to explore and describe the experiences of parents whose children have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the transitions of daily life. T1D is a long-term illness, and parents of children with T1D often become informal caregivers and face many challenges in their daily lives. A qualitative study design, in line with interpretive description, was used, and a sample of 10 parents of children with T1D participated in individual interviews. The COnsolidated criteria for REporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist was used. The interviews were analyzed using
