BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is not a well-studied disease in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study assessed its clinico-epidemiological profile and treatment patterns.
METHODS: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted in conveniently selected dermatologic clinics of Mekelle city, Ethiopia. A two-phased study was conducted, in which the first was to determine prevalence of vitiligo while the second phase was to describe the clinico-epidemiological profile and treatment pattern of vitiligo. Vitiligo is a common depigmenting disorder ensuing the loss of epidermal melanocytes. It is a multifactorial disease with immunological, genetic and environmental factors including drug exposure. The purpose of the study was to investigate the drugs and therapeutic subclasses associated with vitiligo occurrence reported in VigiBase® , the WHO pharmacovigilance database. A case/non-case study was carried out by defining cases as vitiligo reports and non-cases as all other reports. The reporting odds ratio (ROR) was calculated for the 'suspected' drugs and drug classes according to ATC level 4.

PURPOSE: To evaluate insulin eye drops for persistent epithelial defects (PEDs) that are refractory to usual treatment in clinical practice and to analyze how it may improve epithelization.
METHODS: A prospective non-randomized hospital-based study was performed. Patients with PEDs that were refractory to conventional treatment were treated with insulin eye drops four times a day. Patients' demographics, PED etiology, concomitant treatments, and comorbidities were reviewed. The rate of PED closure and epithelial healing time were considered the primary outcome measures.
