WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Interaction between staff and patients with a diagnosis of personality disorder in forensic settings is important for quality of care, but research is lacking on what determines this interaction. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Insight, emotion-focused coping and emotion regulation of staff influence the interaction between staff and these patients. Staff who understand their own thoughts, feelings and behaviour better (more insight) needed less support, encouragement or back-up from their patients. Staff who cope by getting upset, blaming themselves

BACKGROUND: Access to mental health care is a struggle for those with serious mental illness (SMI). About 25% of homeless suffer from SMI, compared with 4.2% of the general population.
OBJECTIVE: From 2003 to 2012, St. Paul's Center (SPC) operated a unique model to provide quality care to the homeless and those at risk for homelessness, incarceration, and unnecessary hospitalization because of SMI. Data were available for analysis for the years 2008 to 2010.
DESIGN: The SPC was developed, managed, and staffed by board-certified psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioners, offering comprehe

INTRODUCTION: The question of whether gender dysphoria is associated with psychiatric comorbidity has been addressed in several studies. Several cohort studies have shown that psychiatric comorbidity is one of the main features of poor prognosis following sex change therapy. Gender dysphoria is rare, with an estimated prevalence of 0.001% to 0.002% globally. The literature shows a high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities in people with gender dysphoria, and that they are more common in male to female transsexuals. Data on long-term mortality show that transsexuals present a 51 % increase i

BACKGROUND: Individuals' childhood experiences can strongly influence their future health and well-being. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as abuse and dysfunctional home environments show strong cumulative relationships with physical and mental illness yet less is known about their effects on mental well-being in the general population.
METHODS: A nationally representative household survey of English adults (n = 3,885) measuring current mental well-being (Short Edinburgh-Warwick Mental Well-being Scale SWEMWBS) and life satisfaction and retrospective exposure to nine ACEs.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: Conventional rTMS protocols for major depression commonly employ stimulation sessions lasting >30 min. However, recent studies have sought to improve costs, capacities, and outcomes by employing briefer protocols such as theta burst stimulation (iTBS).
OBJECTIVE: To compare safety, effectiveness, and outcome predictors for DMPFC-rTMS with 10 Hz (30 min) versus iTBS (6 min) protocols, in a large, naturalistic, retrospective case series.
METHODS: A chart review identified 185 patients with a medication-resistant major depressive episode who underwent 20-30 sessions of DMPFC-rTMS (1

AIM: This study presents a case report on the emergence of delusional jealousy and person-directed hostility in a patient following anoxic brain injury.
CASE STUDY: The patient did not have a pre-injury history of mental illness, nor a family history of a psychotic disorder. This patient was followed-up over a 5-year period and his history of treatment response, violence risk management and successful rehabilitation are presented. This study also highlights issues in relation to continuation of treatment with antipsychotic medication, use of compulsory admission under the Mental Health Act an

Paroxetine binding could be a vulnerability marker for traits associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD). To study this relationship, we examined [³H] paroxetine binding in female patients with BPD and their sisters. The sample consisted of 54 sibling pairs in which a proband met criteria for BPD. All subjects were given the Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines, revised (DIB-R), the Diagnostic Assessment for Personality Pathology: Brief Questionnaire (DAPP-BQ), the Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS), the Affective Lability Scale (ALS), the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A), the

BACKGROUND: The study illuminated how persons with psychiatric disabilities experienced the processes of change in a residential context.
MATERIAL: Qualitative interviews with residents living in supported housing were conducted and analyzed using constant comparative analysis.
DISCUSSION: Residential conditions appear to provide a complex structure that facilitates rehabilitative interactions, in which 'progressive tensions' arise between opposing values, such as authentic versus artificial, and independence versus dependence, both of which are important in the process of change.
CONCLUSIO

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the latent structure of childhood aggression, like the latent structure of adult antisocial behavior, is dimensional. One thousand and five Israeli schoolchildren completed a translation of the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (AQ; Buss & Perry, 1992) and were rated by their homeroom teachers on the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI; Robinson, Eyberg, & Ross, 1980). The AQ Physical Aggression and Verbal Aggression scales were combined to form the 1st indicator, the AQ Anger and Hostility scales were combined to form the 2nd indicator, t

The tenth revision of the International Classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders (ICD-10) introduced the category F23 'Acute and transient psychotic disorders' (ATPD) to incorporate clinical concepts such as the French bouffée délirante, cycloid psychosis (Germany), and the Scandinavian reactive and schizophreniform psychoses. The aim of this paper is to review the literature on ATPD and to examine how it has been differentiated from the other categories of F2 group 'schizophrenia and related disorders'. Papers published between 1993 and 2007 were found through searches in Medline, P

According to our present knowledge depression and hopelessness play an important role in attempted suicide and the development of hopelessness seems to be closely associated with poor problem solving skills. In the present study we have used the internationally well-known MEPS (Means-Ends Problem Solving Test; a measure of social problem solving ability) in Hungary for the first time and combined with other tests. We intended to explore the cognitive risk factors that potentially play a role in the suicidal behavior in clinical population. In our study we compared a group of individuals who ha

"Operationalised psychodynamic diagnostics in childhood and adolescence" (OPD-CA) has been completed in its first version after years of development. In a first interview with a 13-year-old boy, the diagnostic instruments of OPD-CA are presented by means of examples. The text passages of the transcribed first interview are evaluated in four sections by representatives of the respective working groups regarding the axes--relationships, conflict, structure and preconditions for treatment--and the diagnostic conclusions resulting from this are presented, thus providing a direct insight into the s

Data from two large undergraduate samples were used to develop the phobic stimuli response scales (PSRS). Factor analyses of data from the first sample (N = 380) led to the creation of several scales, two of which (Social and Blood-Injection Fears) demonstrated good reliability and convergent validity. Analyses of data from a second sample (N = 330) were used to modify the three remaining scales (Animal, Bodily Harm, and Physical Confinement Fears), which also showed sound psychometric properties. As predicted, the PSRS were differentially correlated with neuroticism and extraversion, which ma

BACKGROUND: Of the 2 reports in the literature on anger attacks in bipolar depression, one found them to be uncommon (12%) compared with the rate in bipolar mixed states and unipolar depression (40%-60%), whereas the other found them to be common (62%). We examined anger attacks among participants in an 8-week trial of open-label citalopram added to mood stabilizer for the treatment of bipolar depression. We also examined trait anger, hypomanic symptoms, and depressive symptoms as predictors of anger attacks. We hypothesized that if anger attacks were related to hypomanic symptoms they would r

The mechanisms of change due to different psychotherapeutic treatments of anxiety disorders are the subject of the present study. Sixty-eight patients with agoraphobia and panic (DSM III R No. 300.21, ICD 10 No. F 40.01) were included, exclusively treated with client-centered treatment (n = 28) or with additional behavioral exposure treatment (n = 40) in an inpatient setting. The patients were examined on admission, at discharge, and at 6 and 12 months follow-ups with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM III R (SKID), the Freiburg Personality Inventory (FPI R), and the Giessen Test (GIESS

The present study was designed to test the short-term efficacy and safety of naltrexone in the treatment of pathological gambling disorder. Seventeen subjects (seven men, 10 women) who fulfilled DSM-IV criteria for pathological gambling disorder, and were free from other Axis I diagnoses by Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R screening, participated in a 6-week open naltrexone flexible dose trial. Gambling symptom change was assessed with the patient-rated Clinical Global Impression (CGI) Scale, the clinician-rated CGI and the Gambling Symptom Assessment Scale. Side-effects were monito

The relationship between anhedonia and sensation seeking has been studied in 56 normal subjects of both sexes (33 males, 23 females). Anhedonia and sensation seeking were respectively defined by two reliable rating scales: Physical Anhedonia Scale of Chapman (PAS), Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scale (SS form V -40 items). The results have shown a negative correlation between this scales for males but not for females. These finding suggest that lowered levels of sensation seeking could constitute for males, like anhedonia, a risk factor of schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical experience and recent reports suggest that there is a high prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with panic disorder and that there is a high prevalence of panic disorder in patients with irritable bowel syndrome, a functional gastrointestinal disorder. To assess gastrointestinal symptoms in a nonpatient, community-based sample, the authors surveyed the prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms in individuals with panic disorder and other or no psychiatric disorders obtained in a national community survey.
METHOD: Subjects were 13,537 respondents at four sites

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the effect of depression on neuropsychological performance in HIV-infected men. Previous studies have suggested that depression may account for the neuropsychological abnormalities observed in some patients with HIV infection, but few studies have specifically examined this question.
METHOD: An extensive neuropsychological test battery was administered to 121 HIV-seropositive asymptomatic men and 42 HIV-seronegative comparison subjects. The seropositive subjects were grouped into depressed and non-depressed groups on the basis of scores on the Beck Depression I
