PURPOSE: Down Syndrome (DS) is characterized by intellectual disability, hypotonia, and joint laxity. Physical disability can be an additional problem and manifests as reduced lower limb muscle strength and impaired balance. The objectives of this study were to characterize DS dynamic foot-ground contact area and to study its relationship with balance impairment among adolescents with DS.
METHODS: Twenty-eight children and adolescents with DS and 28 non-DS adolescents/children were matched for age and sex. The Oxford Ankle Foot Questionnaire (parents' version) was used to measure disability r

BACKGROUND: Some foetuses scheduled for balloon valvuloplasty present with unfavourable lies that render a successful procedure unlikely or impossible. In these situations, foetal posturing previously has been achieved by maternal laparotomy. As a less invasive means, we demonstrate the feasibility of a minimally invasive foetoscopic approach.
CASE SUMMARY: Percutaneous ultrasound-guided foetal balloon valvuloplasty for severe aortic valve stenosis was attempted in a human foetus at 29 + 4 weeks of gestation under general maternofoetal anaesthesia. Unfortunately, prior to the procedure, the f

(1) Background: The assessment of postural segment control in premature infants seems to be critical during the onset of upright gross motor development, especially sitting. Identifying correlations between postural segment control and the development of sitting milestones could help with promoting optimal gross motor movement. However, data on this topic in home-raised premature infants via longitudinal design are still limited. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between postural segment control and sitting development through series assessments from the corrected age of 4

INTRODUCTION: Military personnel and civilian athletes are both at risk for mild traumatic brain injury. However, these groups are unique in their training and typical daily activities. A fundamental gap in the evaluation of military personnel following mild traumatic brain injury is the lack of military-specific normative reference data. This project aimed to determine if a separate normative sample should be used for military personnel on their performance of the Cleveland Clinic Concussion application and a recently developed dual-task module.
METHODS: Data were collected from healthy mili

Amputation in the transfemoral amputee (TFA) results in loss of sensory feedback of the amputated limb and therefore results in the poor postural stability. To assess the postural stability, the limit of stability (LOS) is a reliable parameter. In this study, we have investigated the effect of vibrotactile feedback (VF) on the LOS during the weight shifting exercise (WSE) for a TFA. The data of centre of pressure (COP) during WSE was collected from five TFA and five healthy individuals using a zebris force plate. The VF was provided on the amputated/healthy limb's anterior and posterior part o

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: Dual-task performance, in which individuals complete two or more activities simultaneously, is impaired following mild traumatic brain injury. The aim of this project was to develop a dual-task paradigm that may be conducive to military utilization in evaluating cognitive-motor function in a standardized and scalable manner by leveraging mobile device technology.
METHODS: Fifty healthy young adult civilians (18-24 years) completed four balance stances and a number discrimination task under single- and dual-task conditions. Postural stability was quantified using data gathe

INTRODUCTION: Postural reactions have been used to facilitate dorsiflexor activity following stroke. However, the effectiveness of this method is not clear in the literature. This study is designed to test the effect of postural reactions provoked by sitting in an unstable surface on dorsiflexor activity in acute stroke.
METHODS: Fifteen first-time acute hemispheric cerebral infarct patients with hemiplegia and 15 age-matched healthy adults participated in the study. Subjects performed static sitting, forward reach and lateral reach on a stool and Swiss ball. The anterior tibial activity was

In many daily jobs, repetitive arm movements are performed for extended periods of time under continuous cognitive demands. Even highly monotonous tasks exhibit an inherent motor variability and subtle fluctuations in movement stability. Variability and stability are different aspects of system dynamics, whose magnitude may be further affected by a cognitive load. Thus, the aim of the study was to explore and compare the effects of a cognitive dual task on the variability and local dynamic stability in a repetitive bimanual task. Thirteen healthy volunteers performed the repetitive motor task

BACKGROUND: Impaired postural control has been reported in static conditions in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, but postural control in dynamic tasks have not yet been investigated. Thus, we investigated measurements from a force plate to evaluate dynamic balance control during gait initiation in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia compared to matched healthy controls.
METHODS: Thirty female participants (10 per group) performed five trials of gait initiation. Center of pressure (CoP) trajectory of the initial weight shift onto the supporting foot in the mediola

OBJECTIVE: Contraversive pushing (CP) is a neurologic disorder characterized by a lateral postural imbalance. Pusher patients actively push toward their contralesional side due to a misperception of the body's orientation in relation to gravity. Although not every patient with CP suffers from spatial neglect (SN), both phenomena are highly correlated in right-hemispheric patients. The present study investigates whether peripersonal visuospatial functioning differs in neglect patients with versus without CP (NP+ vs. NP- patients).
METHOD: Eighteen right-hemispheric stroke patients with SN were

Syncope and orthostatic intolerance (OI) are common clinical syndromes often requiring medical attention. The former is defined as transient loss of consciousness and postural tone due to self-limited cerebral hypoperfusion, while the latter consists of inappropriate cardiovascular responses to upright posture such as occur with orthostatic hypotension (OH) or postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. The most frequent causes of syncope and OI are conditions that temporarily disrupt essential moment-to-moment interaction between the autonomic nervous system and cardiovascular system. In this …

About 80 papers dealing with verticality after stroke have been published in the last 20years. Here we reviewed the reasons and findings tha … n, leading or not to a pushing. Schematically, patients with a hemispheric stroke align their erect posture with an erroneous reference of verticality, tilted to the side opposite the lesion. Assessment of treatments in children with cerebral palsy has been well developed, especially in the gait laboratory. However, the prerequisite for walking is adequate postural control. We hypothesize that a treatment of an equinus deformity should improve postural control. Balance control was assessed by static posturography on the Balance Master. Nine diplegic children, six girls and three boys, participated in the study. Assessment was conducted before and after treatment of the equinus deformity. Two static tests (Weight Bearing Squat and the modified Clinical Test for Sensory Interaction o

OBJECTIVE: To investigate by static posturography the occurrence of balance disorder in migraineurs without a history of vertigo during the interictal period.
BACKGROUND: The link between migraine and balance disorders has long been known but postural balance in migraineurs without manifest vestibulopathy has been rarely studied.
METHODS: We studied 25 migraineurs and age- and gender-matched controls. With static posturography we measured: (1) postural sway with eyes open or closed on a platform or on foam with 4 different head positions; (2) limits of stability as patients change their cent

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between excursion of the diaphragm muscle and spinal curvatures in mouth breathing children.
METHODS: A total of 52 children of both sexes, aged from 5 to 12 years, were studied. After otorhinolaryngological assessment, the children were divided into two groups: mouth breathers and nose breathers. All of the children underwent videofluoroscopic examination of the diaphragm muscle and postural assessment. Diaphragm excursion was analyzed using Adobe Photoshop software, and postural assessment was recorded using photographs in left lateral view, which

Tremor is one of the most frequent neurological signs. The correct clinical classification is mainly clinical. The most frequent primarily neurological tremor is essential tremor (prevalence 2 to 5%). It presents in most cases as a more or less symmetrical postural and kinetic tremor. In about 60% of cases an autosomal-dominant inheritance is found. Tremor may manifest not only in the hands but also in the head and voice. In about 60 to 70% of the patients alcohol may improve the tremor. Parkinsonian tremor is normally a tremor at rest and it starts asymmetrically. The legs and the face are fr
