Assessment of problems and symptoms in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Significant physical and psychosocial problems and related symptoms are observed in cancer survivors after treatment as well as during the treatment period. This study was aimed to assess problems and symptoms in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) survivors. Study was applied in three hospitals in Ankara/Turkey with 91 children who were diagnosed and treated with ALL and with their family. Data were collected using the data collection form developed by the researchers. The variables were investigated using the Mann-Whitney U and chi-square test. The most common physical problems and

Prevalence and Predictors of Overweight and Obesity Among a Multiethnic Population of Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Survivors: A Cross-Sectional Assessment.

As previous studies of obesity in survivors of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have primarily been conducted among non-Hispanic white survivors or children treated on older protocols, our objective was to describe the prevalence and correlates of overweight status among an ethnically diverse population of pediatric ALL survivors, largely treated with more contemporary therapies. We evaluated the overweight/obesity status of pediatric ALL survivors (n=406) followed in the Texas Children's Cancer Center between 2004 and 2014. Survivors were classified as underweight, normal weight,

Precursor B cell lymphoblastic lymphoma presenting as periorbital swelling.

An 11-year-old girl was admitted for further investigation as to the cause of her bilateral papilloedema and periorbital swelling. She had a 2-week history of headache and unilateral eyelid swelling, and a 2-day history of right-sided groin swelling. CT and MRI scans revealed soft tissue adjacent to the lateral orbital walls within the extraconal lateral aspects of both orbits, more on the right than the left. The scans also revealed extensive lymphadenopathy above and below the diaphragm. The patient underwent bone marrow studies and biopsy of the lymph node in her groin. The results revealed

Environmental, maternal, and reproductive risk factors for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Egypt: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is the most common pediatric cancer. The exact cause is not known in most cases, but past epidemiological research has suggested a number of potential risk factors. This study evaluated associations between environmental and parental factors and the risk for ALL in Egyptian children to gain insight into risk factors in this developing country. METHODS: We conducted a case-control design from May 2009 to February 2012. Cases were recruited from Children's Cancer Hospital, Egypt (CCHE). Healthy controls were randomly selected from the general populat

Adaptive Immunity to Leukemia Is Inhibited by Cross-Reactive Induced Regulatory T Cells.

BCR-ABL(+) acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients have transient responses to current therapies. However, the fusion of BCR to ABL generates a potential leukemia-specific Ag that could be a target for immunotherapy. We demonstrate that the immune system can limit BCR-ABL(+) leukemia progression although ultimately this immune response fails. To address how BCR-ABL(+) leukemia escapes immune surveillance, we developed a peptide: MHC class II tetramer that labels endogenous BCR-ABL-specific CD4(+) T cells. Naive mice harbored a small population of BCR-ABL-specific T cells that proliferated modest

T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia after liver transplant.

T-cell posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders after solid-organ transplant are rare and may be clinically aggressive. A 3-year-old boy had liver transplant from his grandfather because of hepatoblastoma. The immunosuppressive regimen was based on tacrolimus and prednisolone. At 22 months after transplant (age, 5 years), the patient presented to the hospital because of severe cough. Computed tomography scan of the chest showed a large left mediastinal mass (9 × 7.2 × 7 cm) and left pleural effusion. A Tru-Cut biopsy of the mediastinal mass showed diffuse infiltration with blast cells, and

Survival improvement by decade of patients aged 0-14 years with acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a SEER analysis.

To evaluate treatment outcomes in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) over the past 3 decades, we assessed the survival of children with ALL in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Among 12,096 patients from 18 SEER sites diagnosed from 1981 to 2010, survival rates improved each decade from 74.8% to 84.5% to 88.6% at 5 years and from 69.3% to 80.9% to 85.5% at 10 years (P < 0.0001). For ages 10-14 years, 10-year survival increased by more than 20 percentage points to 75.3%, but for infants, it remained low at 54.7%. Improvements in survival rates were o

Influence of insurance and marital status on outcomes of adolescents and young adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Although outcomes for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are worse when treated according to adult rather than pediatric protocols, one criticism is that this may be due to the emancipation of young adults. METHODS: Using case listing session of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 18 (1973-2010), we examined outcomes for AYA with ALL defined similar to Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) 10,403 criteria (age 18-30) predicated on marital and insurance status as surrogates for emancipation (limiting analysis to 2007-2010). Delayed-type hypersensitivity in response to L-asparaginase in a case of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

L-asparaginase (L-Asp) is an important reagent for acute lymphoblastic leukemia because asparagine is required for the malignant growth of tumor cells, especially lymphoblastic leukemia cells. An allergic response to L-Asp is not unusual because L-Asp is derived from Escherichia coli and is often recognized as a foreign protein. The hypersensitivity induced by L-Asp is of the immediate type in most cases. We report on a 5-year-old girl who was hospitalized for precursor T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia. She was treated according to a Tokyo Children's Cancer Study Group protocol (TCCSG ALL L09-160

Exposure to house painting and the use of floor treatments and the risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Painting in the home has been identified as a potential risk factor for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The aim of this analysis was to investigate whether exposure to house painting or floor treatments before birth or during childhood increased the risk of childhood ALL. Data from 389 cases and 876 frequency-matched controls were analyzed using unconditional logistic regression, adjusting for study matching variables and potential confounders. Overall, there was little evidence of an increased risk with painting inside the house in the year before the pregnancy, during the pregn

The magnetic resonance spectroscopy findings of extrapontine myelinolysis in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy findings of extrapontine myelinolysis have been rarely reported. Herein, we present MR spectroscopy findings as well as the conventional MR and diffusion MR findings of an acute lymphoblastic leukemia patient with extrapontine myelinolysis. Advanced MR imaging including diffusion-weighted imaging and MR spectroscopy may be helpful to exclude other pathologies in the differential diagnosis and make the diagnosis when there is a diagnostic difficulty on cases clinically suspicious for extrapontine myelinolysis.

Parvovirus B19 presenting with persistent pancytopenia in a patient of T-ALL post induction chemotherapy diagnosed on bone marrow examination.

Manifestations of parvovirus B19 vary even in the normal host from asymptomatic or subclinical infection to a spectrum of illness with symptoms during viremic and immune complex mediated stage of disease. We report the morphological findings of parvovirus B19 infection (confirmed on serology) in a patient of T-acute lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-ALL) who underwent induction phase of chemotherapy (MCP 842 protocol). Persistent pancytopenia in the bone marrow aspirate with mild increase in blasts was thought to be due to failure to achieve marrow remission. However, giant pronormoblasts with promine

Family history of cancer and non-malignant diseases and risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a Children's Oncology Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Studies of family history of cancer and non-malignant diseases in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) show inconsistent findings. Most studies show no increased risk with family history of cancer. Non-malignant diseases such as allergic diseases, autoimmune diseases, birth defects and thyroid diseases have been reported to be associated with ALL. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study of family history of cancer and selected non-malignant conditions (allergic diseases, autoimmune diseases, birth defects, and thyroid diseases). ALL cases were obtained from Children's C
