Safety Evaluation of Weissella cibaria JW15 by Phenotypic and Genotypic Property Analysis.

Weissella cibaria is one of the bacteria in charge of the initial fermentation of kimchi and has beneficial effects such as immune-modulating, antagonistic, and antioxidant activities. In our study, we aimed to estimate the safety of W. cibaria JW15 for the use of probiotics according to international standards based on phenotypic (antibiotic resistance, hemolysis, and toxic metabolite production) and genotypic analysis (virulence genes including antibiotic resistance genes). The results of the safety assessment on W. cibaria JW15 were as follows; (1) antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) (kanamy…

The role of the human gut microbiota in colonization and infection with multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Anticandidal Activities by Lactobacillus Species: An Update on Mechanisms of Action.

Lactobacilli are among the most studied bacteria in the microbiome of the orodigestive and genitourinary tracts. As probiotics, lactobacilli may provide various benefits to the host. These benefits include regulating the composition of the resident microbiota, preventing - or even potentially reverting- a dysbiotic state. Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen that can influence and be influenced by other members of the mucosal microbiota and, under immune-compromising conditions, can cause disease. Lactobacillus and Candida species can colonize the same mucosal sites; however, certain …

Prevention of Atopic Dermatitis.

Despite advances in atopic dermatitis (AD) treatments, research into AD prevention has been slow. Systematic reviews of prevention strategies promoting exclusive and prolonged breastfeeding, or interventions that reduce ingested or airborne allergens during pregnancy and after birth have generally not shown convincing benefit. Maternal/infant supplements such as Vitamin D have also not shown any benefit with the possible exception of omega-3 fatty acids. Systematic reviews suggest that probiotics could reduce AD incidence by around 20%, although the studies are quite variable and might benefit…

Pancreatic Diseases and Microbiota: A Literature Review and Future Perspectives.

Gut microbiota represent an interesting worldwide research area. Several studies confirm that microbiota has a key role in human diseases, both intestinal (such as inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, intestinal infectious diseases, irritable bowel syndrome) and extra intestinal disorders (such as autism, multiple sclerosis, rheumatologic diseases). Nowadays, it is possible to manipulate microbiota by administering prebiotics, probiotics or synbiotics, through fecal microbiota transplantation in selected cases. In this scenario, pancreatic disorders might be influenced by gut microbiota…

Durian extract possesses anti-proliferative and probiotics effects in in vitro models. These effects warrant further investigation in human interventional studies for the development of functional food.

Cow's milk proteins can be detected also in oral polio vaccine, certain probiotics and lactulose syrup. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest caution in administration of pharmaceuticals containing milk allergens in children allergic to milk.

Combating Cholera.

Cholera infections caused by the gamma-proteobacterium Vibrio cholerae have ravaged human populations for centuries, and cholera pandemics have afflicted every corner of the globe. Fortunately, interventions such as oral rehydration therapy, antibiotics/antimicrobials, and vaccines have saved countless people afflicted with cholera, and new interventions such as probiotics and phage therapy are being developed as promising approaches to treat even more cholera infections. Although current therapies are mostly effective and can reduce disease transmission, cholera outbreaks remain deadly, as wa…

Alternatives to prokinetics to move the pylorus and colon.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Gastrointestinal motility disorders (GMDs) are common in the ICU. When encountering these problems, one typically thinks of prokinetics. This review summarizes current evidence of treatments. RECENT FINDINGS: Prokinetics are not the first-line therapy for GMDs. In fact, the clinical implications of using prokinetic agents are rather controversial. Current evidence on alternative treatment modalities such as fluid and electrolyte management, laxatives, opioid antagonists, purgative enemas, acupuncture, physical therapies and probiotics is growing. SUMMARY: Current state of …

Eckol-rich phlorotannins and fucoidan from brown seaweeds promote lactic acid Bacteria growth and postbiotic production.

Emerging evidence shows that gut microbiota-derived metabolites regulate enteric and central nervous systems, and patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit reduced levels of lactic acid bacteria (LAB)-derived postbiotics, particularly short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and γ-amino butyric acid (GABA). This study examines the structures of brown seaweed prebiotics, phlorotannins and polysaccharides, and their effects on LAB growth and postbiotic production. Phlorotannins profiling revealed an abundance of eckol and its derivatives. Monosaccharide analysis identified fucoidan as the predominan

l-Malic Acid Potentiates Bifidobacterium breve Bb18 Tolerance and Synergistically Ameliorates Colitis via Gut Microbiota-Metabolite Modulation.

This study investigated l-malic acid (l-MA) as a protectant enhancing Bifidobacterium breve Bb18 (Bb18) bile tolerance and its synergistic therapeutic efficacy against DSS-induced colitis in mice. In vitro, 0.4% l-MA optimally enhanced Bb18 tolerance to glycodeoxycholic acid (GDCA) by 52.3%, preserving membrane integrity, boosting energy metabolism, and upregulating bile salt efflux genes, thus promoting a multidimensional cellular adaptive response. In vivo, the combination of Bb18 and l-MA synergistically alleviated the colon length shortening by 20.1%, reduced inflammation, and restored gut

Effects of Selenium-Enriched Lactobacillus plantarum on Production Performance, Egg Selenium Deposition, and Ovarian Antioxidant Function in Laying Hens During the Late Laying Period.

In late-laying hens, the progressive decline in reproductive performance is fundamentally linked to oxidative stress-induced ovarian dysfunction, where conventional dietary selenium (Se) levels often fail to maintain systemic and localized redox homeostasis. The aim of this study was thus to investigate the regulatory effects of supplemental selenium-enriched Lactobacillus plantarum (Se-LP) on production performance, egg quality, Se deposition, and ovarian antioxidant function. A total of 720 hens (63 weeks of age) were randomly assigned to five treatments (8 replicates/group, 18 hens/replicat

Gut microbiome dysbiosis in uveitis - mechanistic insights and emerging therapeutic strategies.

Recent studies have suggested the existence of a gut-eye axis, thus bringing the role of gut microbiota (GM) in the development of ocular inflammation in uveitis into focus. The proposed mechanisms for GM dysbiosis-induced uveitis include molecular mimicry, increased intestinal permeability by disruption of barrier integrity, immunomodulation, and alterations. Data from observational clinical studies indicate distinctive microbial signatures associated with uveal inflammation. Based on these findings, novel therapeutic modalities targeting the GM, such as antibiotics, probiotics, prebiotics, f…

The Dual Role of the Gut Microbiota in Cancer Chemoresistance.

Chemoresistance is one of the primary reasons that cancer chemotherapy fails to deliver successful treatment outcomes and contributes to poor overall survival rates for patients with cancer. New research has begun to shed light on the effects of the gut microbiome (GM). This new research will examine how certain microorganisms (referred to as "bad bacteria") can contribute to cancer treatment failure, as well as how others (such as Bifidobacterium, Akkermansia, and Lactobacillus) can enhance treatment success. This review will focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects, includi
