Correlates of the MMPI-2 anger content scale.

Scores on the MMPI-2 anger-content scale were correlated with those on Spielberger's anger expression scale, Zelin, et al.'s anger self-report scale, and the Cook and Medley hostility scale. Subjects were 32 men and 33 women in college. As expected, the anger-content scale correlated significantly with measures of anger awareness, anger expression (anger out versus anger in), and negatively with anger control. There was also a significant correlation with measures of hostility (projection of anger) for men.

Platelet alpha 2-adrenergic receptor binding to 3H-yohimbine and personality variations in normals.

The authors examined platelet alpha 2-adrenergic receptor binding to 3H-yohimbine and several personality variables in 58 adult males in a campus community. Subjects with high receptor Bmax levels exhibited personality traits of less social inhibition and more sensation seeking and thrill seeking behavior, were more playful and autonomous, and came from healthier, more intact families. The results also suggested that high affinity states of platelet alpha 2-adrenergic receptors (low Kd) correlate with traits suggestive of stability, i.e., Autonomy, Dominance, Nurturance, Order, Succorance, and

Neuropsychological profiles of children with learning disabilities and children with documented brain damage.

This study sought to identify clusters or subtypes of children with learning disabilities (LD) and documented brain damage (BD) on the basis of a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Sixty subjects, 24 with LD and 36 with BD, participated in the study. The standard scores for several measures from the Intermediate Battery of the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery and other select measures were submitted to Q-Technique factor analysis for the entire sample. Five clusters were determined. No one cluster was composed exclusively of LD or BD subjects, with the proportions of LD and BD

Evaluation of the Pleasure Scale in the assessment of anhedonia in children.

The Pleasure Scale for Children, a measure developed to assess anhedonia in school-age children, was evaluated. Psychometric properties and concurrent validity of the scale were evaluated with 232 child psychiatric inpatient children (ages 6-13) and their parents. Based on prior research with adults, predictions were made that children with a diagnosis of major depression would evince greater anhedonia on the scale and that anhedonic children (low Pleasure Scale scores) would show a negative attributional style in relation to rewarding experiences. The results indicated that the Pleasure Scale

A summary of the reliability and stability of MMPI scales.

A sample of MMPI research published between 1970 and 1981 was analyzed to yield reliability and stability estimates for the MMPI scales. In fundamental agreement with previous research, moderately high levels of reliability and stability were found for all scales. Reliability values ranged from .71 to .84; stability values ranged from .63 to .86. These findings are based on thousands of adult subjects from college, psychiatric, medical, alcohol or drug rehabilitation, and prison populations. The present scale estimates have wide generalizability and, therefore, should be of value to clinicians

Toward an assessment of the construct validity of four measures of narcissism.

In recent years there has been growing conceptual interest in narcissism, coupled with the rapid development of several paper and pencil measures. Clearly, construct validation should be performed prior to the adoption of any measure. This study reports on the construct validation of four scales that purport to measure narcissism. A conceptual definition of narcissism is provided, and a number of empirical analyses are performed, including examination of internal consistency reliabilities, intercorrelations among the four narcissism scales, and correlations with related and unrelated measures.

Evaluation of two shortened forms of the SAWAIS with three diagnostic groups.

This study evaluated the shortened forms of the WAIS by Coolidge (1976) and Golden (1976), respectively. This was accomplished by administering the South African Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (SAWAIS) to subjects with depression (N = 42), mentally retarded subjects (N = 32), and subjects who presented with an organic brain syndrome (N = 79). Correlations between the full scale scores and the shortened form scores fluctuated between .80 and .91. With all three groups the shortened forms indicated significance (p less than .01 with all six correlations). It appears that these two shortened f

Life events preceding the onset of panic disorder.

The life events experienced in the 12 months prior to the first panic attack were studied in 23 patients with a DSM-III diagnosis of panic disorder as well as in 23 healthy subjects matched for age, sex, social and educational level. Patients showed significant excess of life events compared to controls, however life events were assessed. Panic patients in fact scored higher on the number of events, the weighted scores (according to Paykel's scale) and the number of subjects who underwent a major life event (death or severe illness, either personal or of a cohabiting relative) in the two month

Cumulative scales for the measurement of agoraphobia.

The questionnaire responses of 559 agoraphobic subjects were analysed to see whether there was a shared hierarchical pattern of fear and avoidance. The items were divided on the basis of a principal component analysis into 13 loading on an Agoraphobia factor and eight on a Claustrophobia factor. When analysed with Guttman Scaling Analysis valid cumulative scales were found for each factor. These scales were replicated in three independent cohorts of subjects and met the most stringent scaling requirements. The scales produced three valid scores of severity for each individual, the first descri

Neuropsychology and cluster analysis: potentials and problems.

This report presents a selective overview of the cluster analysis literature and its potential uses in neuropsychology. In addition, an actual problem involving data from the Florida Longitudinal Project is presented to provide a practical example of many of the processes and problems involved in cluster analytic techniques. It is hoped that the reader will gain a theoretical and practical understanding of such methods and their potential usefulness in neuropsychology and other related areas.

Gamified Assessment of Medication Literacy in School-Aged Children: Instrument Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Assessing medication literacy in children is essential for evaluating school-based health education, yet traditional measurement tools often fail to engage children, compromising data quality. Gamified assessments offer an alternative, but their psychometric properties, comparability to conventional formats, and responsiveness to intervention effects require systematic evaluation. OBJECTIVE: This study developed and evaluated a gamified assessment tool for measuring medication literacy across 4 domains (knowledge, attitude, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral intention) i

The Orphaned Innovation: Cost, Structural Barriers, and Global System Shifts Prompting Reimbursement Reform in Endoscopic Spine Surgery-Insights From 1.2 Million Cases.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic spine surgery (ESS) is increasingly recognized for its clinical efficacy and patient-centered advantages, including reduced morbidity and faster recovery. However, despite growing global interest, its adoption remains highly variable, shaped more by systemic, economic, and institutional forces than by technical limitations. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate global adoption barriers to ESS using psychometrically validated tools and identify region-specific structural disparities through Rasch analysis and differential item functioning (DIF). METHODS: A cross-sectional global surve

A scoping review of transcription-less practices for analysis of aphasic discourse and implications for future research.

BACKGROUND: It is important to capture a comprehensive language profile from speakers with aphasia. One way to do this is to evaluate spoken discourse, which is language beyond a single simple clause used for a specific purpose. While the historical trend in aphasiology has been to capture performance during isolated language tasks, such as confrontation naming, there is a demonstrated need and benefit to collecting language information from tasks that resemble everyday communication. As a result, there has been an increase in discourse analysis research over time. However, despite clinicians'

Social anxiety and fear of negative evaluation: construct validity of the BFNE-II.

The Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale [BFNE; Leary, M. R. (1983). A brief version of the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 9, 371-375] is a self-report measure designed to assess fear of negative evaluation, a characteristic feature of social anxiety disorders [Rapee, R. M., & Heimberg, R. G. (1997). A cognitive-behavioral model of anxiety in social phobia. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 35, 741-756]. Recent psychometric assessments have suggested that a 2-factor model is most appropriate, with the first factor comprising the straightforwardl

Criterion A as Developmental Severity: Reclaiming the Psychodynamic Core of Personality Functioning.

The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) distinguishes severity of personality dysfunction (Criterion A) from maladaptive trait expression (Criterion B). Debates about whether the Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS) is unidimensional or multidimensional have attracted considerable attention but largely miss the point. Personality functioning, as conceived within psychodynamic developmental theory, is singular by definition-not because factor analyses extract a dominant factor but because psychological development itself is one process. The DSM-5 Work Group constructed C
