The role of Seladelpar in primary biliary cholangitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic autoimmune liver disease characterized by progressive bile duct destruction, leading to cholestasis and, if untreated, liver failure. Although ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) remains the first-line treatment, many patients exhibit an inadequate response, necessitating alternative therapeutic options. Seladelpar, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta (PPAR-δ) agonist, has emerged as a promising alternative due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized

Probiotics for adults with major depressive disorder compared with antidepressants: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

CONTEXT: Despite recent advances in antidepressants in treating major depression (MDD), their usage is marred by adverse effects and social stigmas. Probiotics may be an efficacious adjunct or standalone treatment, potentially circumventing the aforementioned issues with antidepressants. However, there is a lack of head-to-head clinical trials between these 2 interventions. OBJECTIVE: A systematic review and network meta-analysis was conducted to compare the efficacy and acceptability of these 2 interventions in treating MDD. DATA SOURCES: Six databases and registry platforms for the clinica

The effects of high intensity exercise on pregnancy outcomes and complications during pregnancy: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: There is a strong correlation between the level of physical activity undertaken during pregnancy and the health of both the mothers and the fetus. The physical activity guidelines for pregnancy recommend moderate to high-intensity exercise, yet in practice, few pregnant women currently engage in high-intensity exercise, and there is no consensus on its effect on pregnancy outcomes. The objective of this meta-analysis was to investigate the effects of high-intensity exercise on pregnancy outcomes and pregnancy complications in healthy pregnant women. METHODS: Electronic searches of

Integrative Evidence on Mulberry Extract for Modulating Metabolic Risk Factors Associated with Vascular Dementia.

Metabolic syndrome refers to a group of conditions that commonly occur together, including abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, high triglyceride levels, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL). These factors collectively increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cognitive impairment. Recent research has identified a connection between metabolic syndrome and cognitive disorders such as mild cognitive impairment and vascular dementia (VaD). Mulberry (Morus alba L.) is a natural source of bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory

Beta-blockers for electroconvulsive therapy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an established treatment for various mental disorders. However, ECT can induce significant haemodynamic fluctuations, raising safety concerns. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of adding beta-blockers to ECT on maximum heart rate after stimulation and the occurrence of adverse events. Only randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that compared the addition of beta-blockers to ECT with treatment as usual (TAU), such as placebo added to ECT or ECT without antihypertensive or antiarrhythmic medications, were included. The primary

Non-traditional barriers to participation in pharmacologic chronic kidney disease clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: The Agenda for Sustainable Development agenda prioritizes access to care for non-communicable diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), and sustainable cities and communities. City-level health may impact local research capacity and subsequent participation in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We identified city-level barriers to CKD RCT participation in the cities from the Global Observatory of Healthy and Sustainable Cities (GOHSC). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 214 drug CKD RCTs (2003–2023) with participants spanning 146 GOHSC sites. We queried open

Effect of processed electroencephalography-guided anesthesia on postoperative delirium: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication following surgery, associated with extended hospital stays, cognitive decline, and increased mortality, yet effective pharmacological prevention remains elusive. Processed electroencephalography (p-EEG) guided general anesthesia is designed to reduce excessive neural suppression linked to POD development. However, conflicting evidence exists due to variations in devices and regional practices. METHODS: We systematically searched Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from database inception to J

Brain Tissue Oxygen Combined with Intracranial Pressure Monitoring in Patients with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: An Updated Systematic Review and Pooled Analysis Following the OXY-TC Trial.

BACKGROUND: Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with high mortality and long-term disability. Effective TBI management, aimed at minimizing secondary brain damage, requires constant monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP) with or without brain tissue oxygen pressure (PbtO2). The recent OXY-TC trial suggested that combined ICP + PbtO2 monitoring does not improve the 6-month neurological outcomes, prompting a meta-analysis to reassess the clinical role of PbtO2 monitoring. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis by searching the PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane
