A positive association between cryptosporidiosis notifications and ambient temperature, Victoria, Australia, 2001-2009.

Increased temperatures provide optimal conditions for pathogen survival, virulence and replication as well as increased opportunities for human-pathogen interaction. This paper examined the relationship between notifications of cryptosporidiosis and temperature in metropolitan and rural areas of Victoria, Australia between 2001 and 2009. A negative binomial regression model was used to analyse monthly average maximum and minimum temperatures, rainfall and the monthly count of cryptosporidiosis notifications. In the metropolitan area, a 1 °C increase in monthly average minimum temperature of th

Determining the optimal vaccine vial size in developing countries: a Monte Carlo simulation approach.

Outreach immunization services, in which health workers immunize children in their own communities, are indispensable to improve vaccine coverage in rural areas of developing countries. One of the challenges faced by these services is how to reduce high levels of vaccine wastage. In particular, the open vial wastage (OVW) that result from the vaccine doses remaining in a vial after a time for safe use -since opening the vial- has elapsed. This wastage is highly dependent on the choice of vial size and the expected number of participants for which the outreach session is planned (i.e., session

BACKGROUND: Thailand is one of the developing countries encountering medical workforce shortage. From the national registry in 2006, there were 33 166 physicians: 41.5% worked in the government sector, 21.6% worked in the private sector, and the remaining worked in non-medical fields. There is no current data to confirm the effectiveness of the national policy to increase physician production. We demonstrate our findings from the strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analysis in medical students and the potential impact on national workforce planning. METHODS: We introduced SWOT

An education model for otitis media care field-tested in Latin America.

The World Health Organization has designated the teaching of otitis media management skills a "priority" status. Effective treatment of ear disease requires that the physician be both informationally educated as well as physically trained to use otoscopy. Little is known about how well this education can be provided in a short time and in a foreign country. To more objectively assess teaching effect, results of an education session for rural Mexican pediatric primary-care providers who were given an intensive otitis media lecture and otoscopy skills workshop in 1990 were evaluated. To test imm

Learning neuroimaging models from health system-scale data.

Neuroimaging is a ubiquitous tool for evaluating patients with neurological diseases. The global demand for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies has risen steadily, placing substantial strain on health systems, prolonging turnaround times and intensifying physician burnout. These challenges disproportionately impact patients in low-resource and rural settings. Here we utilize data from a large academic health system to develop Prima, an AI foundation model for neuroimaging that supports real-world, clinical MRI studies as input. Trained on over 220,000 MRI studies, Prima uses a hierarchica

Socioeconomic Inequalities in the Use of Dental Services According to Ethnicity Among Older Peruvian Adults.

This study investigates the socioeconomic inequalities in the use of dental services among older Peruvian adults according to ethnicity. Oral health issues are prevalent among older populations, with a significant burden in Peru. The study uses data from the Peruvian Demographic and Family Health Survey from 2017 to 2023, focusing on adults aged 60 and older. The analysis reveals that older White/Mestizo individuals have higher dental service utilization compared to other ethnic groups, such as Quechua/Aymara and Afro-Peruvian populations. The research examines the impact of variables such as

Chandipura virus in India: A comprehensive epidemiological review.

The Chandipura virus (CHPV) is an emerging arbovirus in India, transmitted primarily by sandflies and associated with outbreaks of acute encephalitis in children. First identified in 1965 in Maharashtra, CHPV has since been linked to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in several states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh. The virus predominantly affects children under 15 years, particularly in rural areas with poor housing conditions, and is most prevalent during the monsoon season when sandfly activities are high. Its clinical presentation includes a rapid-onset febr

BCLA CLEAR Presbyopia: Epidemiology and impact.

The global all-ages prevalence of epidemiologically-measured 'functional' presbyopia was estimated at 24.9% in 2015, affecting 1.8 billion people. This prevalence was projected to stabilise at 24.1% in 2030 due to increasing myopia, but to affect more people (2.1 billion) due to population dynamics. Factors affecting the prevalence of presbyopia include age, geographic location, urban versus rural location, sex, and, to a lesser extent, socioeconomic status, literacy and education, health literacy and inequality. Risk factors for early onset of presbyopia included environmental factors, nutrit

Marriage practices, decision-making process and contraception use among young married men in rural Odisha, India.

Research on sexual and reproductive health including contraception use has predominantly focussed on women's behaviour. Much less is known about men's behaviour. We investigated the links between marriage practices and decision-making about contraception use among young married men in rural Odisha. This cross-sectional study used a mixed methods design. Data were collected through household surveys and in-depth interviews. Study findings revealed that over half of men were ill prepared for marriage and lacked understanding about what it would entail. Familiarity and communication between spous

Examining intersections of biographies & biologies: Diversity & outcomes of people with multiple sclerosis in Canada (iBio2Div-MS) protocol.

BACKGROUND: Although advances have been made in understanding multiple sclerosis (MS) disease etiology and developing new therapeutics, the benefits of these advances have been distributed inequitably across population groups. Persons with MS (PwMS) who are racialized, men, of lower social position, or living in rural areas experience worse outcomes for reasons yet to be fully elucidated. OBJECTIVE: We designed a prospective three-year longitudinal study to assess the individual and joint effects of contextual, biographical, and biological factors (e.g., sex, age, and genetics), on performanc

Prevalence and correlates of diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes mellitus among adults in rural Uganda during the COVID-19 pandemic: an evaluation of a community-based screening programme.

BACKGROUND: One in two people with diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa remains undiagnosed, which has contributed to the region's high rates of diabetes-related morbidity and mortality. While the COVID-19 pandemic likely exacerbated diabetes prevalence, limited data from the region, including Uganda, hampers our understanding of this impact. To address this gap, we analysed the diabetes prevalence and correlates among adults from three rural districts of Uganda using data from a community-based screening programme conducted by community health workers (CHWs) during the pandemic. METHODS: We used a

Seroprevalence and Epidemiological Characteristics of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome in Patients with Chronic Diseases in Korea.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a tick-borne disease with a high mortality rate. While research has focused on high-risk rural populations and healthy individuals in endemic regions, such as Jeju Island, data on patients with underlying chronic diseases remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence of SFTS virus (SFTSV) in patients with various chronic diseases across the Republic of Korea. Serum samples (n = 2948) collected from 10 regional biobanks between 2009 and 2019 were analyzed using a double-antigen sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Th

Psychological Burden Among Family Caregivers of People with Epilepsy in Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces, South Africa: A Qualitative Study.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition that often requires long-term care provided by family members, particularly in low-resource settings. This responsibility places caregivers at risk of significant psychological burden, which remains underexplored in rural South African contexts. This study explored the psychological burden experienced by family caregivers of people with epilepsy in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, South Africa. A qualitative exploratory-descriptive design was employed. A total of 60 informal caregivers were snowball sampled from rural and peri-urban communities in
