Pharmacotherapy Use for Non-Motor Symptoms Among de novo Parkinson's Disease Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative Participants.

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients experience a range of non-motor symptoms that are believed to be related to disease pathophysiology, many of which are treatable by medications. Among newly-diagnosed PD participants in the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative study, we describe (1) the frequency of medication use for common non-motor symptoms, and (2) when non-motor symptomatic treatment was initiated relative to PD diagnosis. Non-motor medication use was reported by 73% of participants, most commonly for depression, constipation, and anxiety. Treatment of some non-motor symptoms, notab

Sleep medicine in otolaryngology units: an international survey.

PURPOSE: No study to date has described the overall landscape of sleep disorders management and training in otolaryngology departments of different countries. The aim of our study was to investigate and compare settings, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and training programmes. METHODS: An international online survey was developed with the collaboration of the YO-IFOS (Young Otolaryngologists-International Federation of Otorhinolaryngological Societies) to assess the current practice of otolaryngologists in the management of sleep disorders. The survey also included a session dedicated t

A supervised exercise intervention fails to improve subjective and objective sleep measures among older adults with and without HIV.

BACKGROUND: Chronic sleep disruption can have significant negative health effects and prior studies suggest that people with HIV (PWH) have disproportionately higher rates of sleep problems. METHODS: We evaluated baseline sleep of sedentary, older adults (50-75 years) with (n = 28) and without HIV (n = 29) recruited into a 24-week exercise study. Subjective sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI); objective sleep parameters were assessed using wrist-worn actigraphy. Regression models were used to investigate changes in outcomes. RESULTS: Fifty-seven particip

Association of Sleep Duration and Variability With Body Mass Index: Sleep Measurements in a Large US Population of Wearable Sensor Users.

PURPOSE: Ocular infection by human adenovirus species D type 37 (HAdV-D37) causes epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, a severe, hyperacute condition. The corneal component of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis begins upon infection of corneal epithelium, and the mechanism of viral entry dictates subsequent proinflammatory gene expression. Therefore, it is important to understand the specific pathways of adenoviral entry in these cells. METHODS: Transmission electron microscopy of primary and tert-immortalized human corneal epithelial cells infected with HAdV-D37 was performed to identify the means of v

Association between sleep disturbances, fear of hypoglycemia and psychological well-being in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus, data from cross-sectional VARDIA study.

AIM: To assess the relationship between sleep quality, fear of hypoglycemia, glycemic variability and psychological well-being in type 1 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Our data were provided by the VARDIA Study, a multicentric cross-sectional study conducted between June and December 2015. Sleep characteristics were assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Fear of hypoglycemia and psychological well-being were measured with the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey version II (HFS-II) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), respectively. Glycemic variability (GV) was determined us

[The relationship between diabetes, stress and sleep problems in the light of the Hungarostudy 2013 research data].

Introduction: The problem of diabetes worldwide raises increasingly serious public health issues in Hungary. In recent years, the emphasis on obesity as a primary cause of diabetes has been driven by a complex understanding of the causes of civilization: the role of sleep problems and stress in the development of the disease and the aggravation of the condition has been proven and supported. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between stress, sleep problems and diabetes in the representative Hungarostudy 2013 survey. Method: In the cross-sectional questionnaire study,

Effect of ALDH2 on Sleep Disturbances in Patients with Parkinson's Disease.

Monoamine neurotransmitters play essential roles in the regulation of arousal and sleep. Impaired metabolism of monoamine neurotransmitters could result in the accumulation of neurotoxic aldehyde metabolites and, hence, neuronal degeneration. Aldehyde dehydrogenases play an important role in the metabolism of the neurotoxic aldehyde metabolites, including the aldehyde metabolites of dopamine, serotonin, and noradrenaline. Deficient aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) has been suggested to result in the accumulation of these biogenic aldehydes. An ALDH2 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs671

Examining Sleep Duration and Sleep Health Among Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Adults: Findings From NHANES (2005-2014).

Objectives: This study proposed to examine sexual identity differences in sleep duration and sleep health (use of sleep medications or sedatives, trouble sleeping, and diagnosis of sleeping disorders) among American adults. Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2014) were used. Sex-stratified multiple logistic regression models were used to compare sleep duration and sleep health between sexual minority (gay/lesbian, bisexual, not-sure) and heterosexual participants, adjusted for predetermined covariates. Heterosexual participants were the reference grou

Sleep patterns deteriorate over time in chronic corticosterone-treated rats.

Repeated corticosterone (CORT) injections reliably produce depressive-like behavior in rodents. Our previous study showed that sleep parameters were altered in rats after daily injections of CORT for 7 days, and sleep disturbances appeared to be correlated with depressive-like behavior. The aim of the present study was to investigate time-dependent correlations between changes in sleep parameters and the formation of depressive-like behavior in rats after more prolonged treatment with CORT. Rats received daily injections of CORT (40 mg/kg, s.c.) for 7, 14, or 21 days. Electroencephalographic r

The pain-depression dyad and the association with sleep dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Depression, pain, and sleep disturbance is a symptom cluster often found in patients with chronic illness, exerting a large impact on quality of life (QOL). A wealth of literature exists demonstrating a significant association between depression, pain, and sleep dysfunction in other chronic diseases. This relationship has not been described in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). METHODS: Sixty-eight adult patients with CRS were prospectively enrolled. Patients at risk for depression were identified using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) using a cut-off score of ≥

Psychosocial Screening and Assessment Practice within Cardiac Rehabilitation: A Survey of Cardiac Rehabilitation Coordinators in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Many cardiac rehabilitation (CR) guidelines and position statements recommend screening for psychosocial risk factors, although there is wide variation in the recommended factors and recommended screening tools. Little is known about screening in CR in Australia. METHODS: Cardiac rehabilitation coordinators at the 314 CR programs operating across Australia, drawn from the 2014 Australian Directory of Cardiac Rehabilitation Services were invited to participate in an online survey. RESULTS: Of 165 complete responses, 157 (95%) CR coordinators indicated that they screened at entry w

Antipsychotics for fibromyalgia in adults.

BACKGROUND: This review is one of a series on drugs used to treat fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a clinically well-defined chronic condition of unknown aetiology characterised by chronic widespread pain that often co-exists with sleep problems and fatigue. It affects approximately 2% of the general population. Up to 70% of patients with fibromyalgia meet the criteria for a depressive or anxiety disorder. People often report high disability levels and poor health-related quality of life. Drug therapy focuses on reducing key symptoms and disability, and improving health-related quality of life. A

Techniques and transitions: a sociological analysis of sleeping practices amongst recovering heroin users.

This paper seeks to make sense of the sleeping practices of people who are recovering from heroin use. It brings together two hitherto unrelated literatures: the sociology of sleep and studies on heroin use and recovery. Conceptual resources developed within the sociology of sleep are deployed to facilitate the analysis of interview data generated as part of a qualitative investigation into the everyday lives of recovering heroin users living in England. Twenty one men and 19 women were interviewed with 37 of the 40 being interviewed twice, giving a corpus of 77 interviews. Without exception a

A comparison of disrupted sleep patterns in women with cancer-related fatigue and postmenopausal women without cancer.

PURPOSE: Fatigue and disrupted sleep often coexist and both are prominent clinical problems in cancer affecting quality of life. Disrupted sleep patterns are likely related to cancer-related fatigue. The relationship needs further investigation. This study aimed to characterize and compare disrupted sleep patterns in fatigued breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy with postmenopausal women without a history of cancer. Anxiety levels were also examined. METHODS: Data for this secondary analysis came from two studies. Global sleep quality and state anxiety were self-reported by 30 fatigu
