Pilot study to examine the effects of indoor daylight exposure on depression and other neuropsychiatric symptoms in people living with dementia in long-term care communities.

A 12-week study was conducted in eight dementia care communities involving 77 participants addressing the hypothesis that an intervention of increasing indoor exposure to daylight will reduce depression and other neuropsychiatric symptoms. At four communities, staff were enlisted to increase daylight exposure by taking participants to a perimeter room with daylight exposure for socialization in the morning (8:00-10:00 AM) each day. At the other four communities, a control group were taken to a similar sized area without daylight for socialization under typical electrical lighting conditions. P

Being black in a white skin: Beliefs and stereotypes around albinism at a South African university.

Background: Partly because of the legacy of apartheid, and despite being a constitutional democracy, South Africa continues to be a deeply divided society, particularly along racial lines. In this context many people with albinism do not fit neatly into black and white categories and are likely to experience social discrimination and marginalisation. Objectives: The study endeavoured to explore the beliefs and practices regarding albinism within a South African university, and the availability of support services. Method: The research was located within an interpretive qualitative paradigm and

Event-related repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of posterior superior temporal sulcus improves the detection of threatening postural changes in human bodies.

Perceiving others' emotions through their body movements and postures is crucial for successful social interaction. While imaging studies indicate that perceiving body emotions relies upon a wide network of subcortico-cortical neural regions, little is known on the causative role of different nodes of this network. We applied event-related repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over nonfacial, body- and action-related extrastriate (EBA), temporal (pSTS), and premotor (vPM) cortices to test their active contribution in perceiving changes between two successive images of either thre

A partial loss of function allele of methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 predicts a human neurodevelopmental syndrome.

Rett Syndrome, an X-linked dominant neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by regression of language and hand use, is primarily caused by mutations in methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2). Loss of function mutations in MECP2 are also found in other neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, Angelman-like syndrome and non-specific mental retardation. Furthermore, duplication of the MECP2 genomic region results in mental retardation with speech and social problems. The common features of human neurodevelopmental disorders caused by the loss or increase of MeCP2 function suggest that even mo

Addiction Severity Index Recent and Lifetime summary indexes based on nonparametric item response theory methods.

Baseline Addiction Severity Index (5th ed.; ASI-5) data of 2,142 substance abuse patients were analyzed with two nonparametric item response theory (NIRT) methods: Mokken scaling and conditional covariance techniques. Nine reliable and dimensionally homogeneous Recent Problem indexes emerged in the ASI-5's seven areas, including two each in the Employment/Support and Family/Social Relationships areas. Lifetime Problem indexes were derived for five of the areas--Medical, Drug, Alcohol, Legal, and Psychiatric--but not for the Employment/Support and Family/Social Relationships areas. Correlationa

Pediculus capitis infestation according to sex and social factors in Hamedan-Iran.

To determine the intensity of Pediculus capitis infestation (abundance) among school children, children's sex and social factors were analyzed as modifiers of the general prevalence of parasitism. The study included 847 school children (407 girls, 440 boys) between 6 and 12 years, from 12 in public rural primary schools of Hamedan, Province of Hamedan, Iran. Classic prevalence was obtained as the percentage of children with nits and/or lice. The general prevalence was 6.85% (girls: 13.5%; boys: 0.7%, p < 0.001), head lice were much more commonly detected in girls than in boys. The obtained res

[Reliability of the Portuguese-language version of the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN) among adolescent students in the city of Rio de Janeiro].

It is believed that social phobia has its onset during adolescence and precedes other mental disorders; it is thus important to investigate the condition among young people. To date there is no self-reported scale validated for the Brazilian population. The present study investigated the reliability of the Portuguese-language version of the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN) among adolescent students from public schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro. After SPIN was translated into Portuguese, a test-retest reliability study was carried out with 190 students. Intra-class correlation coefficient (IC

Avoidant personality in social phobia and panic-agoraphobic disorder: a comparison.

BACKGROUND: Avoidant personality disorder (APD) is generally believed to be related to social phobia (SP), especially to generalized subtype. However, it has also been reported to be prevalent in panic disorder-agoraphobia (PDA). In the present investigation, we wished to explore whether APD in each of these disorders has discriminatory features. METHOD: We studied 71 SP and 119 PDA patients with state-of-the-art clinical instruments based on DSM-III-R. RESULTS: The pattern of social avoidance in SP was more pervasive: it was characterized by a higher level of interpersonal sensitivity and g

Maternal and Child Health Following 2 Home Visiting Interventions vs Control: Five-Year Follow-Up of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Home-based interventions targeting socially disadvantaged families may help to improve maternal and child health. Only a few studies have investigated how different staffing models affect early home visiting program outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of 2 staffing models of an early childhood intervention on mother and child outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The baseline assessment of this randomized trial was conducted between November 2006 and December 2009 in 15 municipalities in Germany. The follow-up assessment at offspring age 7 years was carried out by i

"I Haven't Been Diagnosed, but I Should Be"-Insight Into Self-diagnoses of Common Mental Health Disorders: Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, social media has become a rich source of mental health data. However, there is a lack of web-based research on the accuracy and validity of self-reported diagnostic information available on the web. OBJECTIVE: An analysis of the degree of correspondence between self-reported diagnoses and clinical indicators will afford researchers and clinicians higher levels of trust in social media analyses. We hypothesized that self-reported diagnoses would correspond to validated disorder-specific severity questionnaires across 2 large web-based samples. METHODS: The partici

What Factors Are Associated With Disability After Upper Extremity Injuries? A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial factors are key determinants of health after upper extremity injuries. However, a systematic review is needed to understand which psychosocial factors are most consistently associated with disability and how the language, conceptualization, and types of measures used to assess disability impact these associations in upper extremity injuries. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What factors are most consistently associated with disability after upper extremity injuries in adults? (2) What are the trends in types of outcome measures and conceptualization of disability in patients'

Stress differentially affects fear conditioning in men and women.

Stress and fear conditioning processes are both important vulnerability factors in the development of psychiatric disorders. In behavioral studies considerable sex differences in fear learning have been observed after increases of the stress hormone cortisol. But neuroimaging experiments, which give insights into the neurobiological correlates of stress × sex interactions in fear conditioning, are lacking so far. In the current functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we tested whether a psychosocial stressor (Trier Social Stress Test) compared to a control condition influenced subs

Timing of HIV interventions on reductions in sexual risk among adolescents.

Examined the effectiveness of an HIV intervention program among 151 adolescents ages 13 to 24 years who were randomly assigned to (a) seven sessions of 1.5 hr each (10.5 hr); (b) three sessions of 3.5 hr each (10.5 hr); or (c) a no-intervention condition. Using cognitive-behavioral intervention strategies, social skills and HIV-related beliefs, perceptions, and norms were targeted in both the three- and seven-session, small-group intervention conditions. Regression analysis indicated that over 3 months, the number of unprotected risk acts and the number of sexual partners were lower in the sev

Positive psychosocial factors and the development of symptoms of depression and posttraumatic stress symptoms following acute myocardial infarction.

INTRODUCTION: Acute myocardial infarction (MI) is a potentially fatal condition, leading to high psychological distress and possibly resulting in the development of depressive symptoms and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). The aim of this study was to investigate the association of clusters of positive psychosocial factors (resilience, task-oriented coping, positive affect and social support) with both MI-induced depressive symptoms and PTSS, independent of demographic factors. METHODS: We investigated 154 consecutive patients with MI, 3 and 12 months after hospital discharge. All patient

Investigation of non-National Immunization Program vaccination intentions in rural areas of China.

BACKGROUND: China's current immunization program was revised in 2007. Some common childhood vaccines such as those for influenza, pediatric pneumonia, Haemophilus influenzae, varicella, and rotavirus have not been included in the National Immunization Program (NIP) and need to be purchased by children's guardians at their own expense. Rural areas, constrained by economic development and vaccine awareness, have a low non-NIP vaccination rate and more family medical expenses and social burden. This study aims to examine the awareness and attitude of rural parents about non-NIP vaccines and relev

Why Exercise Does Not Work Equally Well for Everyone: Life-Course Conditions and the Limits of Precision Medicine.

Advances in molecular profiling and digital health technologies have accelerated efforts to develop precision approaches to physical activity. Initiatives such as the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC), alongside wearable-based monitoring, promise to tailor exercise prescriptions to individual biological responses. Yet a central paradox remains: the biological systems activated by exercise are the same systems implicated in chronic disease under conditions of psychosocial stress. Why do similar biological processes produce adaptive benefits in some contexts and pat

INTRODUCTION: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin condition causing considerable distress. It impacts mobility, social interaction, and quality of life. In Brazil, there is a notable gap in epidemiological data and patient experiences regarding HS. METHODS: This study, spanning 2019 to 2022, employed netnography to probe the experiences of Brazilian patients with HS. This approach gleans insights from online interactions, offering a direct view into patients' lives. RESULTS: Notably, the data illuminated the challenges patients face, such as difficulties in obtaining a diagnosis

Disentangling emotion processes in borderline personality disorder: physiological and self-reported assessment of biological vulnerability, baseline intensity, and reactivity to emotionally evocative stimuli.

This study investigated M. Linehan's (1993) theory that individuals meeting criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD) have high biological vulnerability to emotion dysregulation, including high baseline emotional intensity and high reactivity to emotionally evocative stimuli. Twenty individuals with BPD, 20 age-matched individuals with generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD), and 20 age-matched normal controls (NCs) participated in 2 separate emotion induction conditions, a standardized condition, and a personally relevant condition. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), skin conducta

Inguinal, or Hexsel's hyperhidrosis.

Inguinal Hyperhidrosis (IH) is a focal and primary form of hyperhidrosis in which the individual has intense sweating in the inguinal region. It usually appears in adolescence, not later than the age of 25, in the most cases, and continues into adulthood. With a sample of 26 patients we described Inguinal Hyperhidrosis (IH). Fifty percent of the patients have a positive family history of this condition or other forms of focal or generalized hyperhidrosis, which suggests a familial pattern. Biopsies performed on the inguinal area in a patient with IH and control patient showed normal histology.
