A literature overview of the relationship between life-events and alcohol use in the general population.

AIMS: A critical review of the evidence of effects of stressful life-events on alcohol use in the general population, with a particular focu … d alcohol use. Specification of the model to be tested, including buffering factors such as gender, social support, coping resources, as well as baseline consumption, is important for a correct estimation of the effect of negative life-events.

Experiences from the development of a comprehensive family support program for pediatric trauma and rehabilitation patients.

This report discusses the successes and problems associated with the development of a family support system designed to improve outcomes in a pediatric trauma population. Studies have demonstrated lowered health-related quality of life among injured children during rehabilitation, along with substantial parental stress. By developing comprehensive support services for families, we may decrease parental burden and improve parents ability to care for their children, thus improving health outcomes for them. Through analysis of data from a longitudinal study of injured children, focus group interv

Link Family Support - an evaluation of an in-home support service.

A significant body of research has shown that parents who have a child or a dependent adult with a disability experience significant and persistent levels of stress. One of the recognized strategies for coping includes the provision of in-home practical support. Enable Ireland provides a range of services for children and adults with a physical disability. The present study explored home support services with a sample of 16 families of service users of Enable Ireland Cork. Practical support was deemed to be whatever support or intervention requested by the parent of the child/dependent adult w

[Psychosocial factors associated to depressive episodes with hospitalization in women: a case-control study].

UNLABELLED: The part played by psychosocial factors has frequently been studied in mental disorders whether as protective factors or as vulnerability factors, using variously adequate methods. A large body of research has shown that poor social support or poor self-esteem or presence of stressful life events could play a large part in triggering disorders. The importance of socioeconomic factors in mental illness is so great that such factors (unemployment, insecurity in employment, homelessness, lower social classes, low income) skew the studies in which they are not considered. In this study…

The silent child--mothers' experiences before, during, and after stillbirth.

BACKGROUND: The quality of care received by a woman who gives birth to a dead baby is crucial for her long-term well-being, and limiting the period between diagnosis of intrauterine death and induction of delivery decreases her anxiety risk. The primary objective of this study was to explore why induction of delivery for most women should not be delayed more than 24 hours from the diagnosis of intrauterine death. A secondary objective was to determine how the time between diagnosis and delivery should be spent. METHODS: Twelve women were interviewed about their experience before and during th

The psychosocial impact of cancer: exploring relationships between conditional goal setting and depression.

This study explores depression in cancer patients with reference to conditional goal setting (CGS) theory. CGS theory proposes that depressed individuals believe that personal happiness is conditional upon attainment of specific goals (personal CGS). Other individuals may set important goals believing that goal achievement is a necessary prerequisite of social acceptance and approval (social CGS). CGS has been found to contribute to depression in normal populations. 15.2% of the 67 newly diagnosed cancer patients in this study showed clinical levels of depression. A significant relationship wa

"The pieces fall into place": the views of three Swedish habilitation teams on conductive education and support of disabled children.

A survey concerning how Swedish habilitation staff view the support of disabled children and their families was conducted in 2001. It focused on what support the staff knew about, offered and considered good for the children and parents, and on how they viewed conductive education. Interviews were conducted with 25 team members in three habilitation teams in the south of Sweden. The results show that the support habilitation staff most feel children need is the opportunity to investigate their surroundings, play with other children, meet other children in the same situation and try out differe

Children orphaned by AIDS: a global perspective.

Internationally, the orphan crisis caused by the human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) pandemic remains a serious issue with long-term social consequences. At the end of 2001, an estimated 14 million children worldwide had lost their mother or both parents to AIDS or related causes. Sub-Saharan Africa is the most severely affected, accounting for more than 80 percent of those orphaned as a result of AIDS. Without the care of parents or an appointed caregiver, children are likely to face extraordinary risks of malnutrition, poor health, inadequate schooling,

Relative importance and interrelations between psychosocial factors and individualized quality of life of hemodialysis patients.

Since quality of life (QOL) of hemodialysis (HD) patients is low and frequently difficult to improve by medical therapy, it is important to identify psychosocial correlates and life-domains important for HD patients' QOL. Our hypothesis was that psychosocial factors reflecting appraisal, external and internal resources/impediments correlate with QOL and compensate for adverse effects of disease-related variables on QOL. Forty-eight chronic HD-patients identified and rank-ordered life-domains important for QOL and rated their level of satisfaction with those domains. This was performed using a

Deciding on surgery: supporting parents of infants with craniosynostosis.

Families face a difficult decision when choosing whether or not to have surgery for their infant with isolated craniosynostosis. While the skull deformity may not affect the child's physical health, growth, or development, it may have psychosocial impacts on a child's social-emotional development, self-esteem, and interpersonal interactions. Parents are challenged to balance surgical risks with potentially positive effects on their child's psychosocial health. The purpose of this research study was to explore parental decision-making related to surgery for isolated craniosynostosis, and to ide

Habilitation, support and service for young people with motor disabilities. A Swedish perspective.

'Full participation in society' and 'equal opportunities' are key concepts in Scandinavian habilitation and rehabilitation policy. Few studies have been conducted concerning young people with disabilities and their life situation. This is a short report of a study based on a questionnaire answered by 477 young persons aged between 16 and 25 years, primarily with motor disabilities. The results show that they have fewer opportunities than young people in general to participate in social life. A conclusion is that improvements need to be made regarding the quality and quantity of habilitation su

Factors affecting the decision to place a relative with dementia into residential care.

AIM: To find out the reasons why carers might decide that they could not continue caring for a relative with dementia at home. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews with carers of relatives who have dementia, before placing their relative into residential care and then again four months after that placement. n = 4. RESULTS: Wandering, aggression, incontinence and physical dependency in people who have dementia are factors that might lead carers to consider placing their relative into residential care; stress associated with Christmas can be another influencing factor. CONCLUSION: Carers lookin

'Listen, listen trust your own strange voice' (psychoanalytically informed conversations with a woman suffering serious illness).

This paper argues that the authentic voice of suffering can be denied to people with serious illness. Anguish and expressions of grief are sometimes replaced by joviality. Amid suffering, voices of anguish become strange inner voices that challenge defences of cheeriness and so are avoided, go unheard or are ignored. Bolstered by the everydayness of ward events and hospital life, suppression, repression and denial mean that people with serious illness can suffer without a voice. Listening to others requires the ability to listen to one's own inner voices and recognize how they might guide exch

[Mutual stress and support in couples with one cancer patient].

Sources of distress and support were assessed in a prospective study covering 149 couples with a cancer patient on outpatient chemotherapy, … patients appeared more vulnerable to the psychological impact of illness. Though couples' estimated social support from various sources was estimated greatly helpful, no effects were found on patients' and spouses' distress, respectively. Conclusions in respect of family-oriented interventions are discussed.

Community care for adults with Williams syndrome: how families cope and the availability of support networks.

A study of the adjustment difficulties and needs of 70 adults with Williams syndrome found that the majority continued to live at home and remained heavily dependent on their families for their self-care. Twenty-nine families (41.4%) had had no contact with a social worker in the preceding 2 years, and 34 out of the 48 families whose children still lived at home (70.8%) had no access to respite care. Advice regarding benefits, and appropriate living and occupational arrangements for the adults was also patchy. Despite progressive medical problems, and high rates of behavioural and emotional di

[Support for and problems associated with the highly health care-dependent, single-living elderly].

As a result of trends toward nuclear families and fewer children, the proportion of elderly persons living alone has been increasing in recent years. While an expansion of regional welfare has been proposed, health care problems will intensify and complexity will increase wherever single-living elderly persons desiring treatment at home are highly health care-dependent. Our visiting nurse station is no exception, necessitating a careful consideration of support system preparation, as well as means to respond on an individual basis now and in the future. With the object of investigating a suppo
