Occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by fossil-containing rocks.

AIMS: We present a hypersensitivity immune response to inhalation of antigens from fossil soils frequently used in tile manufacture. We found that the soil polished by a worker affected by pneumonitis was a paleosol containing bivalves from the cretaceous period called Hippurites. METHODS: We made a diagnostic study for pneumonitis (analysis, microbiology, radiology, high-resolution CT, bronchoalveolar lavage, pulmonary biopsy. A biochemical study of the polishing materials used (magnesium hexafluorosilicate crystallizer), steel spoilage, washing liquid and Bilbao red limestone) after scrapin…

Large-Scale Land Development, Fugitive Dust, and Increased Coccidioidomycosis Incidence in the Antelope Valley of California, 1999-2014.

Ongoing large-scale land development for renewable energy projects in the Antelope Valley, located in the Western Mojave Desert, has been blamed for increased fugitive dust emissions and coccidioidomycosis incidence among the general public in recent years. Soil samples were collected at six sites that were destined for solar farm construction and were analyzed for the presence of the soil-borne fungal pathogen Coccidioides immitis which is endemic to many areas of central and southern California. We used a modified culture-independent nested PCR approach to identify the pathogen in all soil s…

Spatial Scale and Field Management Affect Patterns of Phosphorus Loss in Cranberry Floodwaters.

Although cranberries ( Ait.) are indigenous to the northeastern United States, phosphorus (P) fertilizer additions and periodic flooding make commercial cranberry a potential source of P to the region's lakes and streams. In this study, we report values of P export in cranberry floodwaters that range from <0.8 to 4.7 kg P ha, generally reflecting differences in the hydrological, edaphic, and management factors underlying soil P transfer to floodwater. The relatively high P loading rate (4.7 P kg P ha) was associated with harvest flooding of organic-rich soils. Periods of winter flooding and th…

Exploring the bacterial communities in date palm roots in saline versus non-saline environment.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial communities associated with plant roots significantly influence plant growth and adaptation to environmental stresses, particularly in arid agroecosystems. Soil salinity is one critical abiotic stress factor that affects the microbial community structure and functionality. Understanding how soil salinity affects the composition and function of root-associated microbiota in date palms (Phoenix dactylifera L.) could offer valuable insights into enhancing plant resilience and agricultural productivity. RESULTS: This study investigated the influence of soil salinity on the b…

Detection and Genomic Characterisation of Clostridioides difficile from Spinach Fields.

Despite an increased incidence of Clostridioides difficile infections, data on the reservoirs and dissemination routes of this bacterium are limited. This study examined the prevalence and characteristics of C. difficile isolates in spinach fields. C. difficile was detected in 2/60 (3.3%) of spinach and 6/60 (10%) of soil samples using culture-based techniques. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis identified the spinach isolates as belonging to the hypervirulent clade 5, sequence type (ST) 11, ribotypes (RT) 078 and 126 and carried the genes encoding toxins A, B and CDT. The soil isolates be…

Microbial community succession in steam-sterilized greenhouses infected with Fusarium oxysporum.

Fusarium is an economically important crop pathogen but spends a large part of its life cycle in bulk soil environments where it interacts with a diverse community of soil microbes. Antagonistic interactions (e.g. competition) between the resident microbial community and Fusarium could constrain the growth of Fusarium in soil, which might therefore slow or prevent Fusarium establishment. We tracked Fusarium oxysporum in floriculture greenhouses where the soil had been steam-sterilized to remove Fusarium. The data indicated a resurgence of soil bacteria and fungi during the first 90 days post-s…

Understanding reduced inorganic mercury accumulation in rice following selenium application: Selenium application routes, speciation and doses.

Selenium (Se) has recently been demonstrated to reduce inorganic mercury (IHg) accumulation in rice plants, while its mechanism is far from clear. Here, we aimed at exploring the potential effects of Se application routes (soil or foliar application with Se), speciation (selenite and selenate), and doses on IHg-Se antagonistic interactions in soil-rice systems. Results of our pot experiments indicated that soil application but not foliar application could evidently reduce tissue IHg concentrations (root: 0-48%, straw: 15-58%, and brown rice: 26-74%), although both application routes resulted i…

Antimony migration trends from a small arms firing range compared to lead, copper, and zinc.

Small arms firing ranges (SAFRs) contain a mixed amount of bullets and bullet fragments accumulated throughout their designed lifetime. Lead-antimony (Pb-Sb) alloy copper (Cu) jacketed bullets are a common modern ammunition used at SAFRs. The impact of bullets with berm material (i.e., soil) generates a heterogeneous distribution of bullets and bullet fragments in the surrounding soil. As bullets and bullet fragments corrode in the berm soil, the migration potential for antimony compared to other metals is quite high. The goal of this study was to evaluate the spatial Sb migration potential fr…

The Elemental Composition of Fimbristylis ochotensis in Relation to Its Geothermal Habitat.

Fimbristylis ochotensis (Meinsh.) Kom. is a rare and vulnerable plant species of significant scientific and ecological importance. It is an obligate thermophyte that grows exclusively around hot springs and geothermal fields on the Kamchatka Peninsula and in northern Japan. For the first time, the elemental composition of Fimbristylis ochotensis and its associated soils was determined using neutron activation analysis, supplemented with ICP-OES and a direct mercury analyzer, on samples collected from three hot spring zones on the Kamchatka Peninsula. In total, 43 elements were quantified in so…

Light heterogeneity shapes contrasting ecological responses to photovoltaic arrays in Tibetan alpine grasslands.

Alpine grassland ecosystems are highly sensitive to climatic fluctuations and anthropogenic disturbances. The construction and operation of photovoltaic (PV) power stations may alter environmental conditions, yet the relationships among PV-induced microenvironmental changes, vegetation responses, and soil processes remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated two PV power stations located in alpine meadow and alpine steppe settings, integrating microenvironmental monitoring, vegetation surveys, soil measurements, correlation analyses, and partial least squares path modeling to char…

Environmental source of histoplasmosis in India: An unsolved One Health enigma.

BACKGROUND: Histoplasmosis is an emerging mycosis in India. Although clinical cases are increasingly recognized, the environmental niche of the Histoplasma (H.) capsulatum fungus remains poorly defined, with only a single soil isolation reported from India in 1975. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the presence of H. capsulatum in soil samples from endemic regions of West Bengal using conventional culture and sensitive molecular methods. METHOD: Forty-five soil samples were collected from Nadia and Bardhaman districts, targeting sites enriched with high nitrogen content, such as areas under the tree…

Spatial distribution of potentially toxic elements and ecological-health risks in a wastewater-irrigated peri-urban agroecosystem: a multi-matrix assessment from Muzaffargarh, Pakistan.

Peri-urban vegetable growing areas are vital for food security but are increasingly threatened by contamination from nearby industrial sites. This study examined potentially toxic element spatial distribution, bioaccumulation, and associated ecological-health risks in vegetables cultivated with wastewater-irrigated soil for over 30 years in southern Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 540 samples of drinking water, soil, and vegetables were collected from three sectors (X, Y, and Z) for comparative analysis. Potentially toxic elements were assessed using spectrophotometry. The results of soil analyse…

The contributions of rainfall and fog to leaf water of tree and epiphyte communities in a tropical cloud forest.

INTRODUCTION: Tropical cloud forest ecosystems are expected to face reduced water inputs due to climatic changes. METHODS: Here, we study the ecophysiological responses of trees and epiphytes within in an Asian cloud forest to investigate the contributions of rainfall, fog, and soil to leaf water in 60 tree and 30 vascular epiphyte species. We measured multiple functional traits, and δ2H, and δ18O isotope ratios for leaf water, soil water, rainfall, and fog in the wettest (July) and driest (February) months. Using a Bayesian stable isotope mixing model, we quantified the relative contribution…

Pesticide effects on nitrogen cycle related microbial functions and community composition.

The extensive application of pesticides in agriculture raises concerns about their potential negative impact on soil microorganisms, being the key drivers of nutrient cycling. Most studies have investigated the effect of a single pesticide on a nutrient cycling in single soil type. We, for the first time, investigated the effect of 20 commercial pesticides with different mode of actions, applied at their recommended dose and five times their recommended dose, on nitrogen (N) microbial cycling in three different agricultural soils from southern Australian. Functional effects were determined by …

Associations between schistosomiasis and the use of human waste as an agricultural fertilizer in China.

BACKGROUND: Human waste is used as an agricultural fertilizer in China and elsewhere. Because the eggs of many helminth species can survive in environmental media, reuse of untreated or partially treated human waste, commonly called night soil, may promote transmission of human helminthiases. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted an open cohort study in 36 villages to evaluate the association between night soil use and schistosomiasis in a region of China where schistosomiasis has reemerged and persisted despite control activities. We tested 2,005 residents for Schistosoma japonicum in…

Influence of phosphorus nutrition on growth and metabolism of Duo grass (Duo festulolium).

Use of suitable plants that can extract and concentrate excess P from contaminated soil serves as an attractive method of phytoremediation. Plants vary in their potential to assimilate different organic and inorganic P-substrates. In this study, the response of Duo grass (Duo festulolium) to variable rates of soil-applied potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH(2)PO(4)) on biomass yield and P uptake were studied. Duo grown for 5 weeks in soil with 2.5, 5 and 7.5 g KH(2)PO(4) kg(-1) soil showed a significantly higher biomass and shoot P content of 8.3, 11.4 and 12.3g P kg(-1) dry weight respectively…

Review of concentrations and chemistry of trichloroacetate in the environment.

This paper reviews the concentrations of trichloroacetate (TCA) in the atmosphere-plant-soil system. Data originate mainly from Europe. The median TCA concentration in rainwater and canopy drip decreased until 1995. From then the median TCA concentration in rainwater remains rather constant while for canopy drip later data are not available. The same seems to hold for concentrations in air although a very limited data set is available. The median concentrations in coniferous needles and groundwater are constant for the period observed. The median TCA concentrations in soil decreased until 1992…
