Infection and immunoglobulin concentrations in Chediak-Higashi mice.

The Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) has been reported in man, cattle, mink, and mice. CHS humans and cattle have an increased incidence of pyogenic infections, whereas CHS mink are more susceptible to Aleutian disease. Age- and sex-matched groups of CHS mice (mutant strain) and C57 Bl/6N (parent strain) were challenged with Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus intravenously and Streptococcus pneumoniae intraperitoneally. A significant increase (P < 0.001) in mortality rate for the CHS mice was demonstrated with all five challenge organisms. Hetero

[The bacterial microflora of diabetic foot infection and factors determining its spectrum in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)].

The aim of the study was to describe the bacterial microflora of diabetic foot infection and to identify the factors which determine the bacterial spectrum in order to increase empiric antibiotic prescription in Ouagadougou. The study was a cross-sectional one, carried from July 1st, 2011 to June 30, 2012 in the departments of internal medicine and general and digestive surgery in Yalgado Ouédraogo teaching hospital. Samples for bacteriological tests consisted of aspiration of pus through the healthy skin, curettage and swab of the base of the ulceration or tissue biopsy from foot lesions. The

Emergency department management of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus is a known cause of a variety of illnesses that present to the emergency department, including skin and soft tissue infections, pneumonia, and sepsis. Managing these conditions has become more difficult with the emergence of bacterial strains in the community that are resistant to traditional first-line antibiotics. Emergency care providers need to be aware of the increased prevalence of these resistant bacteria, to understand the characteristics of the infections with which they are associated, and to know the effective antibiotic options for treating these bacterial inf

Urinary tract infections. 2. Therapeutic approach.

Acute urethral syndrome is effectively treated with a standard course of an appropriate oral antibiotic. Cystitis can be treated similarly but, because it is regarded as benign in normal hosts, may be better treated symptomatically. Acute pyelonephritis requires a parenteral antibiotic because of its frequent association with bacteremia. In chronic pyelonephritis, an oral antibiotic is chosen for long-term use on the basis of its ability to penetrate damaged renal tissue. When urinary tract infection recurs, reinfection must be differentiated from relapse. Reinfection usually requires long-ter

A comparison of risk factors associated with community-associated methicillin-resistant and -susceptible Staphylococcus aureus infections in remote communities.

In this case-control study, cases [community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA), n=79] and controls [community-associated methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (CA-MSSA), n=36] were defined as a laboratory-confirmed infection in a patient with no previous hospital-associated factors. Skin and soft tissue were the predominant sites of infection, both for cases (67.1%) and controls (55.6%). Most of the cases (79.7%) and controls (77.8%) were aged <30 years. Investigations did not reveal any significant statistical differences in acquiring a CA-MRSA or CA-MSSA infection.

Epidemiology of capsular and surface polysaccharide in Staphylococcus aureus infections complicated by bacteraemia.

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of serious hospital- and community-acquired infections. The discovery of serologically distinct capsular polysaccharides on the surface of clinical isolates has allowed the development of vaccines and passive protective immunity. We have studied patient characteristics, infection characteristics and the surface and capsular polysaccharide serotype distribution in patients with S. aureus infections complicated by bacteraemia admitted to VA hospitals in Maryland between 1995 and 2000. Nine hundred and ninety-three blood cultures from 331 patients were pos

[Resistance situation of selected small animal pathogenic bacteria and prudent use of antibiotics - how do I integrate this?].

As part of a collaborative project funded by the BMEL ("HKP-Mon"), we had the opportunity to access a large data set of antimicrobial resistance tests from Laboklin. A total of 175,171 results from the years 2019 to 2021 were available to us for evaluation. These data sets were used to evaluate relevant bacterial pathogens in dogs and cats and their resistance situation. Results on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) aureus (MRSA), S. pseudintermedius (MRSP), third-generation cephalosporin-resistant (3GCR) Escherichia (E.) coli, 3GCR Klebsiella (K.) pneumoniae and Pseudomonas (P.) aerugi

A blueprint for broadly effective bacteriophage-antibiotic cocktails against bacterial infections.

Bacteriophage (phage) therapy is a promising therapeutic modality for multidrug-resistant bacterial infections, but its application is mainly limited to personalized therapy due to the narrow host range of individual phages. While phage cocktails targeting all possible bacterial receptors could theoretically confer broad coverage, the extensive diversity of bacteria and the complexity of phage-phage interactions render this approach challenging. Here, using screening protocols for identifying "complementarity groups" of phages using non-redundant receptors, we generate effective, broad-range p

Reductions in Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium difficile Infection and Intensive Care Unit-Acquired Bloodstream Infection Across the United Kingdom Following Implementation of a National Infection Control Campaign.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile infections declined across the UK National Health Service in the decade that followed implementation of an infection control campaign. The national impact on intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired infections has not been documented. METHODS: Data on MRSA, C. difficile, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), and ICU-acquired bloodstream infections (UABSIs) for 1 189 142 patients from 2007 to 2016 were analyzed. Initial coverage was 139 ICUs increasing to 276 ICUs, representing 100% of general adult UK ICUs.

Clinical Presentation, Risk Factors, and Outcomes of Hematogenous Prosthetic Joint Infection in Patients with Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia is a life-threatening condition that may lead to metastatic infection, including prosthetic joint infection. METHODS: To assess clinical factors associated with hematogenous prosthetic joint infection, we retrospectively reviewed all patients with a joint arthroplasty in place at the time of a first episode of S. aureus bacteremia over a 5-year period at our institution. Patients with postsurgical prosthetic joint infection without hematogenous prosthetic joint infection were excluded. RESULTS: There were 85 patients (143 arthroplasties) with eith

Surgical management of infected thoracic aneurysms.

Infected thoracic aortic aneurysm (ITAA) is a relatively rare disease. The diagnosis of ITAA is generally made comprehensively based on symptoms, laboratory data and CT findings. Several series of blood cultures are mandatory to first detect the infecting organism. ITAA is usually suspected as a result of the CT findings. A short-interval CT re-examination is essential to confirm the correct diagnosis. A CT scan commonly demonstrates a rapid enlargement of the aneurismal lumen and soft tissue mass surrounding the aorta. One of the characteristics of ITAA is the presence of several nodular or s

Emergence and resurgence of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus as a public-health threat.

Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive bacterium that colonises the skin and is present in the anterior nares in about 25-30% of healthy people. Dependent on its intrinsic virulence or the ability of the host to contain its opportunistic behaviour, S aureus can cause a range of diseases in man. The bacterium readily acquires resistance against all classes of antibiotics by one of two distinct mechanisms: mutation of an existing bacterial gene or horizontal transfer of a resistance gene from another bacterium. Several mobile genetic elements carrying exogenous antibiotic resistance genes migh

Anti-infective catheters: novel strategies to prevent nosocomial infections in oncology.

Intravenous access contributes significantly to the therapeutical success and to the comfort of oncologic patients. The highest risk for bloodstream infections, however, is vascular catheter-mediated. In oncology high mortality is associated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus sepsis. Besides established hygienic measures, the coupling or incorporation of antimicrobial substances to or into catheter materials may be a suitable way to prevent the development of catheter-associated infections. Here we present a risk- benefit evaluation of different models of a
