Inner retinal preservation in the photoinducible I307N rhodopsin mutant mouse, a model of autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa.

Rod-cone degenerations, for example, retinitis pigmentosa are leading causes of blindness worldwide. Despite slow disease progression in humans, vision loss is inevitable; therefore, development of vision restoration strategies is crucial. Among others, promising approaches include optogenetics and prosthetic implants, which aim to bypass lost photoreceptors (PRs). Naturally, the efficacy of these therapeutic strategies will depend on inner retinal structural and functional preservation. The present study shows that in photoinducible I307N rhodopsin mice (Translational Vision Research Model 4

Aspects of Depression Among Socioeconomically Disadvantaged African American Young Adults.

The purpose of this phronetic/pragmatic, mixed-methods study was to integrate quantitative data with qualitative data in examining the complex relations among depression, exercise, screen-viewing time, and life plans among 14 socioeconomically disadvantaged African American young adults. Based on the thematic analysis, the two emerging themes were as follows: life priorities (passing the General Educational Development [GED] test, pursuing profession/career, and being dedicated to church/ministry) and challenges in passing GED examination (e.g., difficulties with the GED test, high stress and

Rhynchophylline Attenuates Neurotoxicity in Tourette Syndrome Rats.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder with clinical manifestations of involuntary and repeated muscle twitching and vocal twitching. The drugs used to treat TS are relatively limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of rhynchophylline (RH) and the underlying mechanism in 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOI)-induced neurotoxicity in a TS rat model. A TS model was induced with DOI. The rats were divided into control, TS, TS + tiapride (25 mg/kg), and TS + RH (20 and 40 mg/kg) groups. Behavioral tests were performed 24 h after the last a

Diagnostic Challenge in PLIN1-Associated Familial Partial Lipodystrophy.

CONTEXT: Heterozygous frameshift variants in PLIN1 encoding perilipin-1, a key protein for lipid droplet formation and triglyceride metabolism, have been implicated in familial partial lipodystrophy type 4 (FPLD4), a rare entity with only six families reported worldwide. The pathogenicity of other PLIN1 null variants identified in patients with diabetes and/or hyperinsulinemia was recently questioned because of the absence of lipodystrophy in these individuals and the elevated frequency of PLIN1 null variants in the general population. OBJECTIVES: To reevaluate the pathogenicity of PLIN1 fram

Complex sexual behaviors during sleep as a manifestation of epilepsy: a case series.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Complex sexual behavior during sleep (CSBS) is a well described clinical entity in nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep parasomnias (i.e. sexsomnia). We report a retrospective case series of CSBS as clinical manifestation of epileptic seizures and compare them with the semiology of sexsomnia. METHODS: Video-electroencephalopraphy (EEG)-monitoring data of patients with epileptic and nonepileptic paroxysmal events from one tertiary epilepsy center between 2013 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical features and presurgical, electroclinical, and follow-up data are prese

Educational attainment predicts negative perceptions women have of their own climate change knowledge.

Education may encourage personal and collective responses to climate change, but climate education has proven surprisingly difficult and complex. Self-perception of knowledge and intelligence represent one factor that may impact willingness to learn about climate change. We explored this possibility with a case study in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2015 (n = 200). Our goal was to test how gender and ethnicity influenced perceptions people had of their own climate change knowledge. Survey respondents were asked how strongly they agreed with the statement "I feel knowledgeable about climate change

Is risperidone effective in reducing challenging behaviours in individuals with intellectual disabilities after 1 year or longer use? A placebo-controlled, randomised, double-blind discontinuation study.

BACKGROUND: Many people with intellectual disabilities use risperidone long term for the management of challenging behaviours, despite its limited proof of effectiveness and its clear association with adverse events. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of ongoing treatment with risperidone in reducing challenging behaviours versus controlled discontinuation on behaviour and health parameters. METHOD: This was a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomised discontinuation trial of risperidone. In the discontinuation group, risperidone was gradually replaced by a placeb

Neural mechanisms of auditory species recognition in birds.

Auditory communication in humans and other animals frequently takes place in noisy environments with many co-occurring signallers. Receivers are thus challenged to rapidly recognize salient auditory signals and filter out irrelevant sounds. Most bird species produce a variety of complex vocalizations that function to communicate with other members of their own species and behavioural evidence broadly supports preferences for conspecific over heterospecific sounds (auditory species recognition). However, it remains unclear whether such auditory signals are categorically recognized by the sensor

Femoral neck cortical bone distribution of dryopithecin apes and the evolution of hominid locomotion.

Only a few postcranial remains have been assigned to the Miocene great ape Dryopithecus fontani, leading to uncertainties in the reconstruction of its overall body plan and positional behavior. Here we shed light on the locomotor repertoire of this species through the study of the femoral neck cortical bone (FNCB) distribution of IPS41724, a partial proximal femur from the Abocador de Can Mata locality ACM/C3-Az (11.9 Ma, middle Miocene; Vallès-Penedès Basin, Spain) attributed to this taxon. This specimen was scanned through computed tomography to measure the superior (SUP) and inferior (INF)

Habituation Learning Is a Widely Affected Mechanism in Drosophila Models of Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although habituation is one of the most ancient and fundamental forms of learning, its regulators and its relevance for human disease are poorly understood. METHODS: We manipulated the orthologs of 286 genes implicated in intellectual disability (ID) with or without comorbid autism spectrum disorder (ASD) specifically in Drosophila neurons, and we tested these models in light-off jump habituation. We dissected neuronal substrates underlying the identified habituation deficits and integrated genotype-phenotype annotations, gene ontologies, and interaction networks to determine the

Why do neurologists miss catatonia in neurology emergency? A case series and brief literature review.

Catatonia is a well-described clinical syndrome characterized by features that range from mutism, negativism and stupor to agitation, mannerisms and stereotype. Causes of catatonia may range from organic brain disorders to psychiatric conditions. Despite a characteristic syndrome, catatonia is grossly under diagnosed. The reason for missed diagnosis of catatonia in neurology setting is not clear. Poor awareness is an unlikely cause because catatonia is taught among conditions with deregulated consciousness like vegetative state, locked-in state and akinetic mutism. We determined the proportion

Early-onset granulomatous arthritis, uveitis and skin rash: characterization of skin involvement in Blau syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Blau syndrome (BS) is a rare monogenic autoinflammatory disease caused by NOD2 mutations. BS classically presents in early childhood as a triad of granulomatous polyarthritis, uveitis and skin involvement. Joint and ocular involvement have been characterized by several cohort studies but only very little data are available on skin lesions. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to provide a detailed clinical and microscopic analysis of skin manifestations and to study whether they may contribute to an early diagnosis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicentre study in a French cohort of 21
