Insights and opportunities from materials chemistry research at primarily undergraduate institutions in the U.S.

Materials chemistry research at primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) in the United States is often characterized by the constraints faculty face: limited instrumentation, smaller research groups, heavier teaching loads, and rapid student turnover. This Perspective argues that PUI materials chemistry research is better understood not as a diminished form of research university science, but as a distinct and productive research mode with its own logic and strengths. Drawing on over 130 studies from more than 40 institutions, we survey contributions across energy conversion and storage, so…

Meeting learners where they are: case presentations in remote pediatric critical care education.

As the burden of pediatric critical illness is heaviest in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), educating trainees in recognizing and treating the sickest children may attenuate high mortality rates, morbidity and hospital length of stay. Remote education is increasingly utilized to provide effective teaching across borders. We describe the efforts of an international collaborative group created to supplement pediatric critical care education through online didactics. An essential part of this has been integrating case presentations into the curriculum to supplement traditional topic-based…

Dismantling Ableism in Undergraduate Medical Education: Promising Practices in Disability-Conscious Training.

The healthcare workforce in the United States does not provide the same standard of care for people with disabilities as for nondisabled peo … which may not extend beyond biomedical models of disability. First, we define current approaches to teaching about disability, highlighting limitations and opportunities for further development. We then identify and analyze approaches to teaching about disability that support the development of disability consciousness among learners. With attention to bot …

Effects of Diagnostic Labels for Students With Learning Problems on Teachers' Stereotypes and Performance Expectations.

Labeling students with learning problems may change teachers' evaluations of them. Our study examined whether the "Special Learning Needs" (SLN) and "Learning Disability" (LD) labels influenced teachers' beliefs that the diagnosis was correct and activated a low-competence stereotype. We examined whether this stereotype lowered teachers' performance expectations and teaching intentions. A sample of 413 German general and special education teachers were randomly assigned to the control (no label) or one of the experimental groups (SLN/LD label). All teachers read the description of a fictitious…

Second Language Teachers' Knowledge and Beliefs About Dyslexia: Turkish Context.

Dyslexia is one of the most common language-based learning disabilities. Teaching a second language (L2) to dyslexic students is still a contested issue among educators. Teachers' knowledge and beliefs about dyslexia play an important role in the successful inclusion of these students in L2 classrooms. The current study investigated the knowledge and beliefs of Turkish second language teachers (SLTs) about dyslexia. Data were collected from 150 participants using the Knowledge and Beliefs About Developmental Dyslexia Scale (KBDDS). The findings revealed that Turkish SLTs possess a moderate lev…

Canine Upper Digestive Tract 3D Model: Assessing Its Utility for Anatomy and Upper Endoscopy Learning.

A teaching strategy using 3D-printed models of the canine upper digestive tract (UDT) for anatomy demonstration and upper endoscopy instruction was evaluated. The canine UDT (esophagus-stomach-duodenum) was scanned and 3D-printed molds were manufactured using silicone casting. First-year students were introduced to these 3D models in practical sessions alongside real specimens. Simultaneously, fifth-year students were trained in endoscope handling and anatomical recognition using 3D specimens. Both groups completed an anonymous survey. Results showed that overall, first-year (n = 93) and fifth…

Analysis of Nursing Education Curricula in Spain: Integration of Genetic and Genomic Concepts.

The integration of genetics and genomics into nursing practice is essential for addressing genetic pathologies and providing personalized patient care. This study aims to analyze the nursing education curricula across Spanish universities to understand how genetic and genomic concepts are incorporated. Using the "Qué estudiar y dónde en la Universidad" (QEDU) database, an official source provided by the Spanish Ministry of Universities, a systematic review of 4720 teaching guides from 118 university centers was conducted. Our findings reveal that 12 centers do not include any genetic or genomi…

"It's been a Process": A Multiple Case Study of Biology Instructor Efforts to Reform their Sex and Gender Curriculum to be More Inclusive of Students with Queer Genders and Intersex Students.

Inaccurate sex and gender narratives have saturated the political landscape, resulting in legal restrictions for people with queer genders. Biology educators can correct these false narratives by teaching scientifically accurate and queer gender and intersex inclusive sex and gender curriculum. Here, we interviewed four undergraduate biology instructors who were working to reform their sex and gender curriculum. Using their reformed curriculum to promote conversation in the interviews, we asked participants about their curriculum, their reform process, and the obstacles they faced in implement…

Fulfilling the Tripartite Mission During a Pandemic.

This commentary examines the challenges pharmacy faculty members have faced while working to fulfill their school's tripartite mission of teaching, research, and service during the coronavirus identified in 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It also outlines considerations that need to be made before moving forward regarding communication, collaboration, and culture. The pandemic has created opportunities for pharmacy educators to take instructional risks and attempt new didactic and experiential teaching methods and assessment strategies. Working remotely has not only altered pharmacy education, but a…

Adapted Picture Exchange Communication System using tangible symbols for young learners with significant multiple disabilities.

Practitioners need validated strategies for teaching children with significant multiple disabilities (e.g., cognitive, motor, and sensory disability) to use tangible symbols for expressive communication. This single-case experimental design study replicated the positive effect of an adapted protocol for teaching Phase 1 of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) using tangible symbols and extended it to a younger group (4-7 years old) of learners with multiple disabilities. It also tested the effect of an adapted protocol for Phase 2 of PECS to incorporate use of a single switch speec…
