Perioperative Blood Pressure Control and Management.

Blood pressure monitoring and management is a vital part of the perianesthetic period. Disturbances in blood pressure, especially hypotension, can have significant impacts on the well-being of small animal patients. There are a variety of mechanisms present to control blood pressure, including ultra-short-, short-, and long-term mechanisms. Several conditions can contribute to decreased blood pressure, including anesthetics, tension pneumothorax, intermittent positive pressure ventilation, hypoxemia, hypercapnia, surgical positioning, and abdominal distension. If hypotension is encountered, th

Where is the common ground between bone marrow mesenchymal stem/stromal cells from different donors and species?

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) feature promising potential for cellular therapies, yet significant progress in development of MSC therapeutics and assays is hampered because of remarkable MSC heterogeneity in vivo and in vitro. This heterogeneity poses challenges for standardization of MSC characterization and potency assays as well as for MSC study comparability and manufacturing. This review discusses promising marker combinations for prospective MSC subpopulation enrichment and expansion, and reflects MSC phenotype changes due to environment and age. In order to address animal modell

Potential Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Sjögren Syndrome With Human Chorionic Gonadotropin.

Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and Sjögren syndrome (SS) ameliorate during pregnancy, through dampening (immunotolerance) of the maternal immune system which protects the fetus from rejection. A large number of studies have shown that human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) contributes to this tolerance. Studies on animal models have reaffirmed that hCG treatment mimics the benefits of pregnancy. Based on the scientific evidence, randomized clinical trials comparing hCG with current therapies and/or placebo are recommended for RA, SS, and for other autoimmune diseases such as

B cell response and mechanisms of antibody protection to West Nile virus.

West Nile virus (WNV) has become the principal cause of viral encephalitis in North America since its introduction in New York in 1999. This emerging virus is transmitted to humans via the bite of an infected mosquito. While there have been several candidates in clinical trials, there are no approved vaccines or WNV-specific therapies for the treatment of WNV disease in humans. From studies with small animal models and convalescent human patients, a great deal has been learned concerning the immune response to infection with WNV. Here, we provide an overview of a subset of that information reg

Upstream therapy for atrial fibrillation in heart failure.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia that occurs as the result of various pathophysiologic processes. Heart failure increases the likelihood of AF. Several aspects of the morphologic and electrophysiologic alterations promoting AF in heart failure (congestive heart failure [CHF]) have been studied in animal models and patients with CHF. Under these conditions, ectopic activity originating from the pulmonary veins or other sites is more likely to occur and trigger longer episodes of AF. This article summarizes the impact of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II rec

Growth hormone therapy and craniofacial bones: a comprehensive review.

Growth hormone (GH) has significant effects on linear bone growth, bone mass and bone metabolism. The primary role of GH supplementation in children with GH deficiency, those born small for gestational age or with other types of disorders in somatic development is to increase linear growth. However, GH therapy seems to elicit varying responses in the craniofacial region. Whereas the effects of GH administration on somatic development are well documented, comparatively little is known of its effects on the craniofacial region. The purpose of this review was to search the literature and compile

Efficacy of antiamebic drugs in a mouse model.

Nitroimidazole antibiotics are the mainstay of treatment of invasive amebiasis; however, few comparative studies of applicable antibiotics are available. Evidence of sporadic clinical failure and rare reports of metronidazole resistance have led to the investigation of novel antiamebic therapeutics. The goal of this study was to examine drug efficacy in both in vitro and in vivo models of intestinal amebiasis. We studied six current and three novel drugs. Many drugs, including metronidazole, nitazoxanide, and nitazoxanide derivatives, were shown to be potently inhibitory in vitro. However, met

3-Nitropropionic acid as a tool to study the mechanisms involved in Huntington's disease: past, present and future.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an inheritable autosomal-dominant disorder whose causal mechanisms remain unknown. Experimental models have begun to uncover these pathways, thus helping to understand the mechanisms implicated and allowing for the characterization of potential targets for new therapeutic strategies. 3-Nitropropionic acid is known to produce in animals behavioural, biochemical and morphologic changes similar to those occurring in HD. For this reason, this phenotypic model is gaining attention as a valuable tool to mimick this disorder and further developing new therapies. In this r

[A rare case of fatal outcome due to extensive facial trauma caused by dogbite].

Statistically 10% of head and neek trauma is caused by animal bite, more often inflicted by dogs. More than 50% of victims are infants and small children. Generally, the result of dogbite is superficial trauma but there are cases of deep soft tissue defects with amputation and multiple bone fractures. In case described in this article, an elderly woman suffered a dog attack, wich resulted in extensive face and head injuries. In spite of receiving proper treatment, the patient passed away. It is highly probable that underlying Syncumar therapy caused complications which contributed to the fatal

Different aspects of peritoneal damage: fibrosis and sclerosis.

Peritoneal sclerosis is very common in peritoneal dialysis patients. It can vary from the mild, clinically silent simple sclerosis always present after years of peritoneal dialysis, to rare but dramatic and often fatal cases of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. Their frequency, pathology, animal models, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, therapy, and prevention are reviewed. Peritoneal fibrosis and sclerosis is a complex phenomenon. At one end of the spectrum we have simple sclerosis: the mild, clinically silent sclerosis always present after years of peritoneal dialysis. At the other en

[Relevance of helminths in the prevention and healing of immune diseases].

The incidence of immune diseases has had a steady significant increase in the industrialized countries since the end of the last century. Epidemiological data suggest that prevention of exposure to helminths may be one of the factors promoting the rise in these diseases. Animal models of immune diseases support this concept by showing that these parasites can prevent and reverse developed diseases. Helminths strongly modulate the host's immune system inducing regulatory immune cells and pathways that afford protection from these illnesses. Helminthic therapy has emerged as a promising treatmen

[Potential application of stem cells in urogynecology].

Recent advances in stem cells therapy and tissue engineering techniques hold great promise for recovery of external urethral sphincter proper functioning and urinary incontinent patients treatment. Adult stem cells (ASCs) may be derived from striated muscles, fat tissue or as mesenchymal cells from bone marrow. These cells can differentiate in functionally normal smooth or striated muscle cells. ASCs injected to external urethral sphincter or bladder neck cause the increase in urethral closure pressure. Favourable findings of trials in animal models and in vitro encouraged to first trials in h

[Sudden cardiac death by commotio cordis].

Commotio cordis due to blunt trauma to the precordium is a rare cause of death in young athletes, occurring less frequently than all of the other athletics-related deaths. Commotio cordis is a term used to describe cases of blunt thoracic impact causing fatality without structural damage of the heart and internal organs. Death is attributed to ventricular fibrillation, which is often resistant to resuscitative therapy. In this article we discussed this catastrophic event, its historical development, epidemiology and clinical presentation, mechanisms for sudden death in commotio cordis, limitat

Hospitalization due to Pasteurella multocida-infected animal bite wounds: correlation with inadequate primary antibiotic medication.

Over a 10-y period, patients hospitalized with Pasteurella-induced cat or dog bite-associated wound infection were analysed retrospectively with regard to preceding antibiotic medication. In 10/14 cases, hospitalization was necessitated in spite of prophylactic or therapeutic administration of oral antibiotics. In 1 case, phenoxymethylpenicillin and flucloxacillin had been prescribed. The other patients received flucloxacillin (7 patients), erythromycin, or cefadroxil (1 patient each), agents that are not consistently active against Pasteurella. In conclusion, hospitalization due to Pasteurell

Fungal pneumonia in a captive black rhinoceros.

A captive black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) with a hoof abscess was treated with long-term antibiotic therapy. After 9 months of treatment, there was rapid deterioration, marked weight loss and reluctance to stand. Profuse, bilateral epistaxis developed accompanied by collapse and the animal was euthanased. Necropsy revealed pulmonary aspergillosis with concurrent Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. Though a well-recognized disease of black rhinoceros, fungal pneumonia has not been reported in this species in Australia. The cost and efficacy of treatment have been questioned, however, prophyla

Gene therapy and the brain.

In this article we describe the application of the emerging concepts of gene therapy to 4 different neurologic disorders. The first of these is Lesch-Nyhan disease, a genetically-determined neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a defect in the gene which encodes the purine salvage enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT). Two additional disorders, Parkinsonism and Alzheimer's disease, are both neurodegenerative diseases of unknown etiology which affect the elderly. The final disorder involves malignant brain tumors. In each of these disorders, basic research with in vitro s

The kidney and arterial hypertension.

It has been known for some time that a relationship exists between the kidney and blood pressure. The renal origin of arterial hypertension has been demonstrated in different animal models resembling human hypertension, with data from humans seeming to confirm this hypothesis. On the other hand, the renal vasculature also suffers the consequences of arterial hypertension, and renal insufficiency can develop as a result of elevated blood pressure levels. Antihypertensive therapy can prevent the development of renal damage secondary to hypertension. For example, calcium antagonists possess speci

Systematic control of dermatophytosis profunda of cattle in the former GDR.

Human occupational diseases orginated from Trichophyton verrucosum infection of cattle belonged to the most frequent zooanthroponoses since 1960. Morbidity peaks of this human dermatophytosis could be observed in 1970 and 1971 with about 740 cases of occupational diseases per year. The ecological properties of Tr. verrucosum (compulsory monoxenic parasite), the pathogenetic development of bovine dermatophytosis (rising immunity with subsequent elimination of the agent), systematic medical therapy and prophylaxis with griseofulvin and other drugs as well as the application of Tr. verrucosum liv

Lithium carbonate in the treatment of movement disorders. A critical review.

In this paper, the efficacy of lithium therapy in the treatment of tardive dyskinesia is reviewed. It is noted that most of the published papers on this topic are anecdotal and single case reports with contradictory results. The well-designed studies indicate that lithium is useful in certain tardive dyskinesia patients and that the red blood cell lithium level may be related to the therapeutic response. Therefore, on the basis of the available information, we conclude that routine clinical application of lithium in the treatment of tardive dyskinesia is not warranted. However, further evaluat
