Circadian timing does not modulate human temporal contrast sensitivity.

Previous studies have reported diurnal variations in color perception and luminance contrast sensitivity, suggesting modulation of visual processing by the circadian pacemaker. To clarify potential time-of-day effects, we examined whether cone-mediated temporal contrast sensitivity is modulated by circadian timing. We disentangled circadian and homeostatic influences on human visual performance using a 40-hour forced desynchrony protocol. Twelve participants (five female participants, 24.4 ± 2.9 years, range 19-30) followed a repeating 3.75-hour cycle comprising 2 hours 30 minutes of wakefulne

Real-time high-throughput characterisation of the surface elasticity of suspended cells.

The intrinsic elasticity of the cell membrane-cortex complex, i.e., the cell surface, is a promising biomarker for cell status and disease and has widespread biological and biomedical applications. However, measuring cell surface elasticity in real time with high throughput has not been achieved so far. Here we develop a system and demonstrate that it can characterise the intrinsic surface elasticity of up to 411 cells per second, with a low latency of less than 1 millisecond per cell from an image to predicted elasticity. Our key innovation is to integrate a multi-layer perception (MLP) based

Prediction in action: Toward an empirical science of active inference.

Active inference has emerged as an influential theoretical framework in cognitive neuroscience, offering a unifying account of perception, action, and cognition under the single principle of surprise minimization. Despite its growing prominence, the framework is often criticized for the difficulty of extracting qualitatively distinct, testable predictions and its limited empirical grounding. This review addresses these concerns by systematically outlining and evaluating key predictions of active inference across decision-making in discrete time and motor control in continuous time. For each do

A Sudden Deprivation: Children's Experiences of Pediatric Intensive Care and Delirium Explored Through Photovoice.

Children cared for in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) while experiencing delirium are a vulnerable group, at risk of undergoing traumatic experiences that may lead to negative outcomes post-discharge. Little is known about how children remember and experience their time in a PICU during severe illness, complicating the implementation of child-centered care that could potentially help them cope with these challenging times. Utilizing the photovoice method, this study aimed to explore the PICU experiences of children who had experienced delirium. Post-discharge, children revisited the war

Beyond the scope: a global perspective on gender disparity among advanced endoscopists.

BACKGROUND: Women remain underrepresented in advanced endoscopy. Factors such as ergonomics, concerns over radiation exposure, and traditional family roles have been identified as barriers in prior studies. To date, no published study has surveyed potential reasons for this at an international level. We aimed to assess factors that may contribute to poor uptake of advanced endoscopy training among women on a global scale. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was designed by the mentees of the inaugural Women in Endoscopy Mentorship Program, including questions on demographics, endoscopy, family,

Striving for completeness: Women's long-term experiences of living with a reconstructed breast after breast cancer - an interview study.

PURPOSE: Breast reconstruction is often evaluated as a surgical outcome, despite evidence that bodily adjustment and satisfaction evolve over time. Existing research mainly focuses on short-term outcomes, providing limited insight into women's long-term lived experiences and implications for oncology nursing practice. This study aimed to explore women's experiences of living with a reconstructed breast 7-8 years after breast cancer surgery, focusing on how satisfaction, bodily perception, and meaning are negotiated over time. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was used, applying induct

Hypnotizability and interoception: Differential associations with accuracy, sensibility, and awareness.

Prior research suggests differences in interoceptive processing across hypnotizability levels; however, the validity of previously used measures has been questioned, and how hypnotizability relates to different interoceptive dimensions remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the relationship between hypnotizability and three dimensions of interoception: accuracy (IA), sensibility (IS), and awareness (IAW). Forty-two healthy participants completed a heartbeat counting task (HCT) and a heartbeat discrimination task (HDT) to measure IA. IS was assessed using the Body Perception Questionnaire

Vision-Based Detection of Large Coal Fragments in Fully Mechanized Mining Faces Using Adaptive Weighted Attention and Transfer Learning.

The unloading port of a scraper conveyor is a critical component in fully mechanized mining operations and is prone to blockages caused by large coal fragments. These blockages primarily result from the limited accuracy and insufficient real-time performance of existing visual perception methods used by crushing robots to identify large coal pieces in complex mining environments. To address this issue, this paper proposes a visual inspection method for coal mine crushing robots based on transfer learning and an adaptive weighted attention mechanism, termed LCDet. First, a lightweight backbone

DLR-YOLO: A High-Accuracy Lightweight Object Detector for Complex Underground Coal Mine Environments.

Object detection in underground coal mines is plagued by critical challenges, including low illumination, high dust-induced noise, extensive target scale variation, frequent occlusion, and fragmented target feature representation, which commonly result in severe missed detections and insufficient detection confidence. To tackle these bottlenecks, this study proposes DLR-YOLO, a high-performance lightweight object detector built upon the YOLOv11n baseline, with three core optimized modules. Specifically, a dynamic multi-scale global perception enhancement module (DMGPEM) is embedded in the back

Efficacy of a simplified photobiomodulation protocol in orthodontic patients: a randomized crossover clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Pain in orthodontic treatments results from an inflammatory process due to the application of forces. Despite photobiomodulation having shown effectiveness in reducing pain sensitivity, the method requires multiple sessions, which complicates its practical application in orthodontic clinics. OBJECTIVE: To test a simplified protocol of photobiomodulation with a single application in adults undergoing orthodontic treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This single-blind, randomized, crossover study evaluated 30 participants undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. Half of them received a

When rhythm guides speech production: Insights from Parkinson's disease and spinocerebellar ataxia.

Rhythmic auditory exposure modulates subsequent speech processing, yet its effect on speech production remains poorly understood. People with Parkinson's disease (PD) or spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) suffer from dysarthria, for which there is no treatment. Using a rhythmic priming approach, we investigated whether brief rhythmic primes modulate speech production and facilitate it in people with PD and SCA considered here as clinical models of basal ganglia dysfunction and cerebellar dysfunction, respectively. Fifty-eight native French speakers (20 controls, 24 people with PD, 14 people with SCA

From microstates to macroscales: A critical review of maximum entropy modeling and energy landscape analysis in functional MRI.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging has revolutionized neuroscience. Traditional analyses focusing on differences in regional activations and pairwise regional interactions (functional connectivity) cannot capture the collective nature of inherently time-variant network dynamics, which would be crucial to better understand the brain function at the systems level. This systematic review on maximum entropy models (MEMs), derived from statistical physics, critically appraises a principled framework that integrates regional activations and pairwise interactions to characterize patterns of dynami

Presence of ultrasonic noise in the housing colony affects behavior and physiology of adult Sprague Dawley rats.

Perception is dictated by our sensory capabilities which vary widely across species. Hearing in humans is confined to a relatively narrow range, thus the presence of ultrasonic noise, sound with a frequency >20 kHz, is often overlooked. Concerningly, it has been determined that the laboratory is rife with ultrasounds which may be a stressor for rats not only due to their extended hearing range but also their use of ultrasonic vocalizations to communicate. To understand the significance of ultrasonic noise in the laboratory, rats were exposed to no noise, broadband noise (2-20 kHz, 70 dB SPL),

The effects of gross motor exercises on perception and praxis in children with motor coordination difficulties-randomized controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Child psychomotor development is holistic, and pediatric rehabilitation increasingly emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches. Movement interventions can influence not only physical but also cognitive and executive functions. Midline crossing exercises may stimulate frontal-parietal networks, including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and superior parietal cortex, involved in praxis and executive control. However, their long-term effects in children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) remain unclear. METHODS: This study examined whether midline crossing exercises imp
