A rare case of Proteus syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: We report a rare case of Proteus syndrome which presented with dysphagia due to unilateral tonsillar hypertrophy. CASE REPORT: Our case had involvement of multiple organs in addition to bony deformities, namely, enlarged right parotid gland and right testis, verrucous naevus, varicose veins and abdominal lipoma. The features unique to this case were a larger right optic disc and expansion of the inner table of the skull. DISCUSSION: A literature review revealed less than 100 bona fide, published cases which fit the revised diagnostic criteria proposed by Turner. SUMMARY: The E

Systematic review of factors contributing to penicillin treatment failure in Streptococcus pyogenes pharyngitis.

OBJECTIVE: Review the evidence for various explanations for microbiologic treatment failure following use of penicillin in group A streptococcal (GAS) tonsillopharyngitis. DATA SOURCE: Systematic review of the literature based on Medline and EMBASE searches, and review of reference lists of included studies. RESULTS: The explanations for penicillin treatment failure in GAS tonsillopharyngitis include 1) carrier state, 2) lack of compliance, 3) recurrent exposure, 4) in vivo copathogenicity of beta-lactamase-producing normal pharyngeal flora, 5) in vivo bacterial coaggregation, 6) poor antibi

Instrumentation and measurement procedures in orofacial myology.

The article describes measurements and measuring devices as they apply to assessment, therapy and research in orofacial myology and myofunctional therapy. Although the list is by no means complete, a wide range of items, their objectivity, complexity, applicability and accuracy is presented.

[Acute recurrent pharyngotonsillitis and otitis media].

BACKGROUND: In the more recent randomized clinical studies, the surgical procedures adopted (adenoidectomy and adeno-tonsillectomy) for the treatment of the effusive and the acute recurrent forms of otitis media have generally shown a relatively modest and not persistent efficacy. It should be pointed out, however, that the cases studied displayed no clinical elements suggesting the existence of any aetio-pathogenic relationship between the auricular inflammation and a possible pathological disorder localized in the tonsils and/or adenoids. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present investigation aimed to

Acute streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis: a review of clinical efficacy and bacteriological eradication.

This review evaluates studies published between January 1997 and August 2003 comparing clinical outcome and bacteriological eradication rates for patients with acute streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis treated with penicillin or other antimicrobial agents. Studies were identified using MEDLINE, and clinical outcome and bacteriological eradication at end of treatment and 2 weeks after end of treatment were ascertained. Any longer-term follow-up was also noted, along with treatment-related adverse events and compliance. Clinical efficacy rates between penicillin and comparator antibiotics were gen

[Isolation of FDC-lymphocyte clusters from human tonsillar tissues].

Follicular B cells and follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) form FDC-lymphocyte clusters and play a central role in events related to humoral immunity in the lymphoid follicle (LF). The secondary LF is divided into five zones, each of which exhibits functional differences. However, the distribution of the clusters across the five follicular zones remains unclear. We here report a procedure for isolating FDC-lymphocyte clusters from fixed tonsillar tissues and compare of the structure of clusters isolated from three follicular zones: the mantle, light and dark zones. First, the germinal centers (G

[Effectiveness of tonsillectomy, evaluated by acoustic rhinometry].

Hypertrophy adenoid commonest cause of nasal obstruction in paediatrics. The morbility can be try alteration in the respiratory physiology, as well as in the face development and function of the middle ear. We used the acoustic rhinometry to evaluate the surgical results of the adenoidectomy in children with hypertrophy adenoid, compiling the data on their clinic, and correlating them as well with the rhinometric results. The acoustic rhinometry is a relatively new method of exploration of the nasal cavity. We obtain space measures that are going to allow to us to prove it. These measures are

[Surgical treatment of adenotonsillar hypertrophy in children with sleep respiratory disorders: changes in polysomnographic patterns].

Adenotonsillar enlargement (ATE) can cause respiratory disorders during sleep in children. The treatment of choice for ATE is adenotonsillectomy and its efficacy must be assessed based on improvement in symptoms and polysomnographic patterns. We studied 11 children (7 boys and 4 girls, age 5.5 years) whose ATE symptoms were corrected by adenotonsillectomy. Two nighttime polysomnograms (SleepLab) were recorded, one at baseline and one 6 months after adenotonsillectomy. Polysomnographic recordings were analyzed by quantifying 1) only apneic or hypopneic events lasting > or = 10 sec and 2) all re

Computed tomographic findings in peritonsillar abscess and cellulitis.

The differentiation of a peritonsillar abscess from peritonsillar cellulitis, although difficult on physical examination, is required in order to determine the appropriate treatment. Peritonsillar cellulitis can be treated with antibiotics alone, while a peritonsillar abscess should be drained. Computed tomography (CT) of the neck is often performed to identify the formation of a deep abscess in the neck, but is rarely used to diagnose peritonsillar infections. We report a patient in whom CT was a useful diagnostic tool for distinguishing peritonsillar abscess from peritonsillar cellulitis.

Rationalization of peritonsillar abscess as an indication for tonsillectomy.

It has been widely held that peritonsillar abscess is a strong, if not absolute, indication for tonsillectomy, performed either immediately or after an interval of some weeks. A retrospective study of 48 patients is presented. It appears that age and the incidence of previous throat infections can be related to the likelihood of further problems and the need for operation.
