Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the most common congenital infection. Here, we report on a case of severe, refractory cCMV hepatitis resulting in end-stage liver disease. A male infant born at 37 weeks gestational age presented with petechiae, splenomegaly, and jaundice associated with a direct hyperbilirubinemia, elevated transaminases, and thrombocytopenia. Urine screen was positive for CMV, and he was treated with valganciclovir. He progressed to decompensated cirrhosis with ascites, hypoglycemia, and coagulopathy and was listed for liver transplant at 4 months of age. At 5 months of a

Neurologic complications after kidney transplantation are frequent and related to immunosuppressive therapy and vintage dialysis time, including comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a very rare and rapidly fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Kidney transplant recipients present with mixed and complex neuropsychiatric manifestations, which makes diagnosis challenging. This case highlights the importance of enhancing awareness of the clinical presentation and timely diagnosis of this rare, fatal neurodegenerative disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In patients with chronic kidney disease the risk of developing Tuberculosis is increased, while the presentation is often atypical making the diagnosis more difficult. The aim of this study is to describe the presentation of Tuberculosis in dialysis and kidney transplant patients, including the range of diagnostic approaches and the utility of different sample types.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, AND MEASUREMENTS: In this retrospective study, case records of dialysis and kidney transplant patients were reviewed, including all those treated for Tuberculosis between

BACKGROUND: Many efforts were made to determine the uncommon clinical complications after lung transplantation and treatment options to tackle them; however, many of these rare complications have not been mentioned in recent publications. Evaluating and recording adverse effects after organ transplantation can significantly prevent post-transplant mortality. This study aimed to examine rejection factors by examining individuals undergoing lung transplantation surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a prospective longitudinal study, we followed up on complications of 60 lung recipients post lung-tr

IMPORTANCE: Uterus transplant has been demonstrated to be a viable fertility-restoring treatment for women categorized as female at birth with absolute uterine factor infertility. Recent advancements, as well as considerations of fairness and equality in reproductive care, have now led to the possibility of uterus transplant being undertaken in transgender women.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the reproductive aspirations of transgender women and their perceptions of uterus transplant.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional survey study used a 27-item electronic questionnaire to

Tracheal transplantation has been envisioned as a viable option for reconstruction of long-segment tracheal defects. We report the first human single-stage long-segment tracheal transplantation. Narrow-band imaging and bronchoscopic biopsies demonstrate allograft vascularization and viable epithelial lining. The recipient was immunosuppressed with Tacrolimus, Mycophenolate mofetil, and corticosteroids. Six months after transplantation, the trachea is both functional and the patient is breathing without the need of a tracheostomy or stent.

Cardiac amyloidosis is a rare infiltrative cardiomyopathy that portends a poor prognosis. There is a growing recognition of co-existent aortic valve stenosis and transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis, with some studies suggesting that dual pathology may be associated increased risk of complication and mortality during surgical intervention. This review aims to evaluate the available literature on non-transplant cardiac surgical interventions in patients with cardiac amyloidosis, with particular focus on diagnosis, high surgical risk and areas of uncertainty that require further research.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination is considered one of the most promising and socioeconomically sustainable strategy to help control the pandemic and several vaccines are currently being distributed in nationwide mass immunization campaigns. Very limited data are available on benefits and risks of COVID-19 vaccination in immunocompromised patients and in particular in solid organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients as they were excluded from phase III trials. This review summarizes current knowledge, international guidelines and controversies regar

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has become a conventional and potentially curative treatment for various hematological diseases. As more sophisticated procedures have been developed and mortality rates have decreased, attention has shifted to the psychosocial challenges associated with transplantation. The psychosocial difficulties accompanying transplantation are addressed in the context of both quality of life (QOL) and psychopathological research. Among the psychiatric comorbidities of HSCT, anxiety, depression, sleep and sexual disorders, delirium and post-traumatic stress d

Renal allograft strangulation is a rare complication following simultaneous kidney pancreas transplant, often causing graft loss. This case report represents the first documented case of a 35-year-old female who developed renal graft strangulation around the left fallopian tube. Our case outlines a new complication that contributes to graft loss concerning iliac fossa anatomy and variations in female patients, as well as surgical considerations that need to be made prior to transplantation. We recommend measurement of the grafted renal vessels within the iliac fossa and respective surroundings

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients remains a major challenge for physicians and surgeons. Active tuberculosis (TB) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in SOT recipients. MTB usually develops after transplantation in a recipient with latent TB infection (LTBI) before transplantation and may also be transmitted from the donor or acquired from the community. Therefore, screening for LTBI in donors and recipients before transplantation is very important in preventing active disease after transplantation. This review article is bas
