PURPOSE: The formulation of relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for high linear energy transfer (high-LET) radiation treatments is revisited. The effects of changed production of sub-lethal damage with varying LET is now considered via the RBEmin concept, where RBEmin represents the lower limit to which RBE tends at high doses per fraction.

The presence of small cell carcinoma within the submandibular gland is an uncommon clinical entity. Primary orbital and primary breast lymphomas comprise very small subgroups of extranodal lymphomas. Clinical presentation at both these sites together is extremely rare. We describe a case of bilateral orbital and bilateral breast mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas with bilateral pre-auricular lymph nodal metastasis. The case history, staging and management for this unusual entity are discussed.

Pneumomediastinum may occur during marijuana inhalation but only rarely has pneumorachis (epidural pneumatosis or aerorachia) been reported. The usual mechanisms that produce pneumomediastinum include severe acute asthma, toxic-induced bronchial hyperreactivity, and barotrauma caused by Valsalva's maneuver (expiration through resistance). We report a case in which barotrauma resulted from repeated deep inspiration through a device with airflow resistance equivalent to Müller's maneuver. Inspiration occurred through a homemade apparatus resembling a narrow outlet bong with 2 piled compartments.

PURPOSE: Report of a case of acquired Brown syndrome caused by infestation of the superior oblique muscle by Cysticercus cellulosae.
METHOD: Case seen in a referral practice. A 20-year-old man presented with recurrent attacks of conjunctivitis and diplopia in upgaze. Clinical examination of ocular motility established a diagnosis of acquired Brown syndrome of the right eye. Computed tomography of the right orbit unequivocally established the diagnosis of superior oblique muscle cysticercosis. The patient was started on systemic steroids and albendazole in the prescribed doses for a month.

This study was carried out to define the post-treatment appearance of the chest radiographs in 44 consecutive patients with Hodgkin disease who received mantle irradiation with or without chemotherapy and to determine how the incidence and severity of post-treatment abnormalities relate to the radiation parameters and chemotherapeutic regimens. Radiographs of the chest in 44 patients, computed tomograms of the chest in 31 patients and of the abdomen of 35 patients were reviewed, prior to and following treatment, for mediastinal contours, pericardial status, cardiac size and pulmonary fibrosis.

AIM OF THE STUDY: To assess the validity of transcanalicular diode laser assisted dacryocystorhinostomy (TLADCR) in the treatment of distal obstruction of the lachrymal pathways.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Between June 1999 and February 2000, 29 TLADCR were performed in the ENT department on 26 patients. Surgical indications included chronic dacryocystitis in 19 cases and dacryostenosis in 10 cases. In all cases but one, the surgery was carried out under a standard general anesthetic. An overview is presented of the various therapy options in cystic and alveolar echinococcosis based on the recent literature and upon personal experience with chemotherapy over the last 20 years. In regions with an optimal surgical infrastructure and relatively small patient cohorts, long-term chemotherapy is practically limited to patients with inoperable echinococcosis, i. e. < 10 % cystic and around 70 % alveolar echinococcosis.

We report for the first time on a puerperal ovarian vein thrombophlebitis associated with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia type II. Two weeks after cesarean section with subsequent prophylactic application of heparin a thrombosis in the left deep femoral and pelvic veins and in the right ovarian vein occurred. Despite only moderately reduced platelet count a heparin-induced thrombocytopenia type II was diagnosed by heparin-induced platelet activation test.
