Influence of alcohol on the acoustic reflex and temporary threshold shift.

Blood alcohol levels between 0.09% and 0.15% were found to reduce the protective action of the acoustic reflex in five human subjects with normal hearing. Specifically, acoustic reflex thresholds were raised, reflex magnitude decreased, and temporary threshold shift increased under alcohol conditions. Stimuli consisted of a narrowband noise (500 to 1,000 Hz) and a 500-Hz pure tone. Measurements were made at blood alcohol concentrations from 0.05% to 0.15%. Temporary threshold shift at 1,000 Hz was determined three minutes after a ten minute exposure of narrowband noise at -5, +5, and +20 dB re

[Changes in the cortical neuronal dendrites in experimental alcoholic intoxication].

The state of the cortical neuron dendrites was studied in rats at various stages of alcohol intoxication; two categories of changes occurred in dendrites--destructive and compensatory. These changes depended on the stages of alcohol intoxication and individual peculiarities of the central nervous system of the animals.

[Several functions of the visual analyzer in chronic alcoholic patients].

The authors examined 615 patients with chronic alcoholism. The study demonstrated an increased number of individuals with myopia, presbyopia, amblyopia, angiomas and angiosclerosis among them as compared to that of the general population. The frequency of optical nerve atrophies in the patients was not high (0.32%). In 205 cases the function of colour sensory and darkness adaptation was determined. The highest frequency of colour sensory was in the group of patients with the withdrawal syndrome. Eventually this function had a tendency towards restitution. The velocity of darkness adaptation wa…

Alcohol influence on hemisphere differences and signal detection thresholds.

Six right- and six left-handed subjects were run in a repeated measures design to determine the influences of alcohol on hemiretina detection thresholds. Stimuli were presented tachistoscopically to the hemiretinae at blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of 0, 50, and 100 mg%. The nasal hemiretinae had higher thresholds than the temporal hemiretinae and this difference was independent of alcohol. Alcohol interacted with visual field and handedness. The results showed that the highest alcohol dose (100 mg%) raised detection thresholds more for the hemifield contralateral to the subject's preferr

Alcohol and road safety: Geelong experience 1967 to 1978.

This paper reviews the part which prior consumption of alcohol played in motor vehicular fatalities in Geelong and district between January, 1967, and June, 1978. There were 344 deaths of persons aged 17 years and older within four hours after the accident. Of 147 such victims who were aged 17 to 50 years and who were drivers of motor vehicles. 54% had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) greater than 0.1 g/100 mL (22 mmol/L) at autopsy. Of 35 male pedestrians, 60% had a BAC greater than 0.15 g/100 mL (33 mmol/L) at autopsy, and 80% of such accidents occurred between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. A high d

Alcohol drinking: abnormal intake caused by tetrahydropapaveroline in brain.

Tetrahydropapaveroline (THP), a dopamine-dopaldehyde condensation product, was delivered directly into the cerebral ventricle of rats automatically every 15 minutes for 12 days. The animals were given access to both water and ethylalcohol, the latter being presented in 12 concentrations from 3 to 30 percent. Within 3 to 6 days of the start of the infusion of THP, the rats, which normally rejected alcohol, drank alcohol solutions in increasingly excessive amounts; this was accompanied by symptoms that were similar to those of withdrawal and intoxication. These results provide evidence that an a

Lymphocyte cytotoxicity for isolated hepatocytes in alcoholic liver disease.

To determine whether an autoimmune reaction to liver-specific proteins occurs in alcoholic liver disease, the cytotoxic effect of lymphocytes on isolated hepatocytes was determined in 27 alcoholic patients. Cytotoxicity was demonstrated in 15 of 17 patients with a histological diagnosis of alcoholic hepatitis, but in none of 10 with other forms of alcoholic liver disease. The ability of a liver-specific membrane lipoprotein to block the reaction suggests that sensitization to this antigen is responsible for the cytotoxicity. The demonstration of cytotoxicity using T cell-depleted, but not B an

[Benign symmetric lipomatosis--symptom of alcoholic liver disease].

Benign symmetric lipomatosis (BSL) leads to characteristic multiple lipomas of the neck and submandibullar region. Seven men with BSL, aged 36--65 years, were investigated with regard to alcohol consumption, clinical findings and liver histology. They admitted a long standing ethanol intake (x = 107 ml/day) prior to the development of BSL. The growth of the lipomas was irregular and occurred over a period of months. There was no correlation with overweight or hyperlipidemia. However, liver biopsy revealed features consistent with alcoholic liver disease in all subjects. It is concluded that BS

Thyroid function in depression and alcohol abuse: a retrospective study.

Admission thyroid function tests were reviewed in 115 euthyroid patients with depression (66), depression and alcohol abuse (30), or alcohol abuse (19). Estimated free thyroxine (EFT) levels ranged from 0.7 to 2.7 ng/100 ml (normal, 1.0 to 2.1). Levels above 2.1 ng/100 ml were associated with agitation and values under 1.1 with alcohol abuse. Mean EFT levels differed significantly among six diagnostic subgroups and paralleled rank order for severity of depression (none, secondary, reactive, single uncategorized, recurrent, psychotic). Alcohol abuse negatively affected EFT: there was a signific

The place of ganglion or root alcohol injection in trigeminal neuralgia.

Of 157 patients with trigeminal neuralgia, referred for neurosurgery, 81 underwent 85 ganglion or root injections. The results, which are analysed with regard to pain relief and sensory loss, compare favourably with results from the literature of other forms of surgery, particularly open temporal root section.

Effect of ethyl alcohol on sympathetic nerve cells in cultures.

Sympathetic chain ganglia of newborn rats were cultured in Rose chambers and their structure was registered, examined and photographed with a phase contrast microscope. When 0.5% (v/v) (86 mM) ethanol was present in the culture medium from the start of culture, the nerve cell bodies appeared similar to those in control cultures for at least a week and there was a normal outgrowth of a nerve fibre network. Higher concentrations had a progessively deleterious effect, 1% (171 mM) ethanol causing the appearance of degenerating cells and 2% (343 mM) ethanol killing all the nerve cells in 4 days. So

Inactivation of lipid-containing viruses by long-chain alcohols.

This report describes the inactivation of lipid-containing viruses by several long-chain alcohols. A striking peak in antiviral activity was found for saturated alcohols having chain lengths from 10 to 14 carbons. Viruses having different membrane structure showed different susceptibilities to alcohols having different chain lengths and structural features. Decanol, dodecanol, and tetradecanol readily inactivated herpes simplex virus and the enveloped bacterial virus phi6. The lipid-containing virus PM2 was susceptible to decanol and dodecanol but comparatively unsusceptible to tetradecanol. T

Alcohol withdrawal syndromes in the human: comparison with animal models.

Alcohol withdrawal syndromes in humans lie on a continuum of increasing severity, from the acute hangover to delirium tremens. Early mild reactions consist primarily of hyperexcitability phenomena such as tremor, insomnia, hyperreflexia and hyperventilation. In more severe degree, the same process gives rise to hallucinations and seizures. These early reactions are mimicked closely by alcohol withdrawal signs in experimental animals. Late reactions in humans are characterized by marked sympathetic nervous system overactivity, profound disorientation and hallucinations. Analogous reactions have

Studies of yeast alcohol dehydrogenase with 3-aminopyridine monucleotide.

3-Aminopyridine mononucleotide, a nicotinamide mononucleotide analog, was prepared by enzymatic cleavage of 3-aminopyridine adenine dinucleotide by a snake venom phosphodiesterase and isolated by means of ion exchange chromatography. The spectrophotometric and fluorometric properties of this analog were studied. Several anions were shown to quench the fluorescence intensity of this analog. pH was shown to have a pronounced effect on the fluorescence intensity. 3-Aminopyridine mononucleotide was shown to be a coenzyme-competitive inhibitor of yeast alcohol dehydrogenase. The 3-aminopyridine mon
