RhoA has been recognized as an important protein for bronchial smooth muscle (BSM) contraction and hyperresponsiveness, and its activation is also regulated by geranylgeranyltransferase I (GGTase I). In the present study, the effects of repeated antigen exposure on the expression of GGTase I were determined in mouse BSMs. Male BALB/c mice were sensitized and repeatedly challenged with ovalbumin antigen. PURPOSE: To present midterm results and problems pertaining to nonpenetrating lamellar trabeculectomy (NPT) with mitomycin C (MMC) for Japanese glaucoma patients.
METHODS: Thirty-nine patients (39 eyes) with primary open-angle glaucoma or normal-tension glaucoma underwent NPT. The results were compared with those in patients treated by penetrating trabeculectomy (PT) with MMC. In addition, the NPT patients were classified into two groups (group A, 24 patients treated between April 1998 and April 1999; group B, 21 patients treated from May 1999 onward), and the results were compared.

BACKGROUND: Atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) and vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) are chronic inflammatory allergic diseases that are associated with some common conjunctival and corneal complications.1 The clinical corneal manifestations of both entities may include superficial punctate keratitis, macroerosions, corneal ulceration, plaque formation, corneal neovascularization, and lipid infiltration.

Primary meningeal lymphoma is a rare occurrence. We present a case of an immunocompetent patient operated on for a fronto-parietal lesion similar to a meningioma, which the histological examination diagnosed as a mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)-type lymphoma. BACKGROUND: Platelet-activating factor (PAF) seems to be implicated in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with associated renal diseases.
AIMS: In this study, we ensured the role of PAF in SLE patients without renal complications.
METHODS: Blood PAF and acetylhydrolase activity, plasma soluble phospholipase A(2), and the presence of antibodies against PAF were investigated in 17 SLE patients without active nephritis and in 17 healthy controls.

Ten patients, mean age 61 years, who presented with unilesional cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) were studied. Lesional structure and distribution were similar to disseminated CTCL. Ablative therapy was successful in all patients. The relatively benign behavior of unilesional CTCL may reflect the prognostic importance of minimal tumor burden. Locally ablative therapy in the management of localized CTCL appears effective.

We report a case of IgA-kappa multiple myeloma in a 68-year-old woman that was revealed by concomitant pleural and pericardial effusion. These effusions were found to be caused by myeloma and were verified by cytological examination of the pleural fluid and pericardial biopsy. The patient had neither osteolytic lesions nor Bence-Jones proteinuria. After a pericardiocentesis, her condition improved with a melphalan and prednisolone treatment. As far as we know, such a phenomenon is rare and has never been reported yet as a way of diagnosing multiple myeloma.

Hydroxyurea (HU) is used in suppressing the bone marrow and producing fetal-like red blood cells (RBCs). These RBCs are large in size and may theoretically disturb the microcirculation. In five patients with myeloproliferative disorders (MPD), the RBC geometry and deformability were analyzed before and after 6 to 8 months of HU treatment. In untreated MPD, the RBC geometry and filterability was normal. After HU, the RBC membrane area increased 24% and the cell volume increased 39% (P <.005).
