We studied the development of ball-and-socket deformity of the ankle by arthrography and radiography in 14 ankles of ten patients with congenital longitudinal deficiency of the fibula accompanied by various anomalies. The effect of two different types of functional ankle-foot orthosis on the gait of patients with spastic hemiplegia was studied. A gap was cut into the conventional stiff orthosis to allow a limited dorsiflexion of 10-15 degrees, while plantarflexion was blocked (spring type). This study attempted to develop a motor functional index, ankle stance angle (ASA), to assess rat sciatic nerve regeneration subsequent to autografting. ASA, 50 degrees in normal rats, is the ankle joint angle at the mid-stance phase of the gait cycle. The authors describe a rare case of fracture of the neck of the talus associated with talonavicular dislocation but no disruption of the ankle and subtalar joints. The fracture united after open reduction and internal fixation. The head of the talus revealed avascular necrosis but the body did not. A literature review retrieved one previous report of a similar injury, but it was open and became infected. The unique features of this injury pattern and its specific complication, isolated avascular necrosis of the talar head, are discussed.

Thirty-seven patients conservatively treated because of chronic lateral instability of the ankle were studied 18 to 23 years after their index visit. Twenty-two patients, 12 with unilateral and 10 with bilateral symptoms (32 of 49 ankles), still suffered from instability, but only three considered further treatment. Degenerative changes were observed in six of 46 radiographically examined ankles, with no correlation to age or persistent instability.

A series of 63 patients with fracture of lateral malleolus combined with deltoid and tibio-fibular syndesmosis tear is presented. The assessment carried out according to Weber's criteria at least 10 years after surgical reconstruction revealed over 90 per cent of good and excellent results. After failure analysis the authors conclude, that complex ligamentous injury needs to be surgically reconstructed.

Subjects in low socio-economic strata in underdeveloped countries are subjected to considerable adverse influences which may enhance age-related changes in the nervous system. We therefore assessed the presence of ankle jerks and the degree of postural hypotension in two groups, one from the upper socio-economic level (58 subjects) and the other from the lower socio-economic level (56 subjects). The reliability of popliteal sciatic nerve blocks was prospectively assessed in 625 blocks performed in 507 patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of compressing antiembolism stocking (T.E.D.) versus the ace-bandage in a prospective randomised trial.
