New Alzheimer's drug expands your options in symptom management.

Gradually progressive memory loss is the keystone of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Other diagnostic signs include deterioration of language and perception, judgment losses, and behavioral problems such as agitation and paranoia. The clock drawing test is a simple in-office measure of spatial orientation. CT or MRI is recommended to rule out vascular injury; blood tests can exclude other types of dementia. Serial mental status exams can document disease progression. Drug therapy is appropriate for managing mental symptoms, including early depression and anxiety. Some patients may derive benefit fro

Long-term treatment of severe dysarthria: a case study.

This case study describes the long-term treatment and changing symptoms in a single subject with dysarthria secondary to basilar artery thrombosis. Initially, the subject was anarthric. Treatment efforts thereafter were directed toward modifying speech respiration, velopharyngeal function, articulatory precision, speech intensity, and speech intelligibility. A variety of treatment and measurement techniques are illustrated. The behavioral change resulting from each of the treatments was small. However, when combined, these small gains in conjunction with some neurological recovery resulted in

Neuroleptic treatment in the borderline patient: advantages and techniques.

A low-dose neuroleptic strategy is indicated in borderline personality disorder as an acute treatment for symptoms of anger, hostility and suspiciousness, referential thinking and paranoid ideation, anxiety and dissociation, depressed mood, and related behavioral dyscontrol. Medication effects are clinically significant although modest in magnitude. Recommended duration of treatment is generally brief (3-12 weeks), although continued pharmacotherapy may be warranted in selected cases. The risks of treatment include the well-recognized side effects of neuroleptics (minimized by low doses) and t

Pharmacologic treatment of eating disorders.

Increased research focusing on the eating disorders has put the clinician on firmer ground when choosing appropriate psychopharmacologic treatments. Recent studies of patients with bulimia demonstrate that treatment with antidepressant medications may substantially reduce symptoms of bingeing and vomiting. The efficacy of pharmacologic approaches to anorexia nervosa is more uncertain, in part because of the limited availability of long-term follow-up studies. The judicious use of appetite suppressant medications, as reviewed in the text, is helpful for mild to moderate obesity. In treating the

Organic brain syndrome. The psychiatric imposter.

Rapid differentiation of organic brain syndrome (OBS) from functional psychiatric illness can be difficult when patients come to an emergency department with predominantly psychiatric symptoms. Using four screening criteria-disorientation, abnormal vital signs, clouded consciousness, and patients older than 40 years with no previous psychiatric history-we detected 38 cases of OBS from 1,140 medically cleared patients. Twelve of these patients were subsequently admitted to a medical unit. Despite the presence of striking behavioral aberration, an increased awareness of the clinical manifestatio

Posttraumatic stress, anxiety, and depression in mothers after preterm delivery and the associated psychological processes.

BACKGROUND: Mothers of preterm infants report traumatic, anxious and depressive symptoms in the postpartum period. Many studies have focused on biological, social, and life circumstance factors to explain the emergence of these symptoms. The process model proposes to focus on psychological processes, which are mechanisms underlying mental disorders. However, the psychological processes underlying the onset of traumatic, anxious, and depressive symptoms in postpartum mothers of preterm infants had not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to identify the most common symptoms experien

Evaluation of Sensorimotor Gating Deficits in Mice Through Prepulse Inhibition (PPI) of the Startle Response.

Prepulse inhibition of the startle response enables measuring animal behavior and helps us understand core aspects of neuropsychiatric diseases. Prepulse inhibition is considered a translational indicator of sensorimotor gating deficits present in schizophrenia patients and is crucial in the characterization of animal models of schizophrenia-like behaviors. Hallucinogenic drugs acting through 5-HT2A receptors, such as psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and dimethoxyiodoamphetamine (DOI), produce symptoms in healthy subjects comparable to those seen in schizophrenia and can be used i

What role do nightmares play in suicide? A brief exploration.

The suicide rate in the United States has climbed each year for more than a decade, highlighting the need for greater understanding of, and prevention strategies for suicidal behavior. Nightmares have been shown to be associated with suicidal behavior independent of several psychiatric risk factors for suicide, such as symptoms of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The specific role of nightmares in contributing to suicide remains unclear due to the difficulty in delineating causal factors. However, the reporting, screening and treatment of nightmares continues to r

Evidence-based, parent-mediated interventions for young children with autism spectrum disorder: The case of restricted and repetitive behaviors.

Restricted and repetitive behaviors represent a core symptom of autism spectrum disorders. While there has been an increase in research into this domain in recent years, compared to social-communication impairments experienced by children with autism spectrum disorders, much less is known about their development, etiology, and management. Parent-mediated interventions have become increasingly popular in the field, with a surge of studies reporting significant findings in social communication and cognitive development in early childhood. Restricted and repetitive behaviors are often not specifi

Serum cholesterol concentrations in suicidal and non-suicidal male patients suffering from persistent delusional disorder.

Suicidal behavior is a major health risk in psychiatric disorders, especially in affective and psychotic disorders. The neurobiology of suicidal behavior is still unclear. Suicidality has been related to a reduced cholesterol levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum cholesterol concentrations in suicidal and non-suicidal men suffering from persistent delusional disorder and in healthy volunteers. Results showed that serum cholesterol concentrations were significantly lower in suicidal than in non-suicidal patients and healthy controls. Also, level of psychopathology (measured by Bri

[Asperger syndrome: an update].

Asperger's Syndrome is a pervasive developmental disorder that manifest itself at pre-school age. It is characterized by qualitative impairments of social interaction, deficits in empathy, motor disturbances, and restricted repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests and activities. A genetic etiology is assumed in context with brain dysfunctions and neuropsychological deficits which are all focused upon nonverbal learning, even though the general intellectual level is within the normal range. Treatment must take into account the individual aspects of each case and is based main

Natural History of Hyperphagia in Patients with Pseudohypoparathyroidism.

Background/Objectives: Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is a group of genetic disorders characterized by end-organ resistance to multiple hormones, short stature, brachydactyly, subcutaneous ossifications, obesity, and developmental delays. The tissue specific imprinting of GNAS in the hypothalamus may lead to different eating behavior phenotypes in maternally inherited (PHP1A, PHP1B) vs. paternally inherited (PPHP) variants. In this exploratory study, we aimed to evaluate differences in eating behaviors in a cohort of patients with PHP1A, PPHP and PHP1B. Methods: Assessments included caregiver-

Maternal, but not paternal, ratings of child preinjury functioning predict child posttraumatic stress.

Pretrauma internalizing and externalizing behaviors have been found to predict posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms (PTSS) in children following injury. However, child in-hospital self-report of pretrauma symptoms may be impacted by their injury and associated medical care (e.g., sedation/pain medications). Parental report of child pretrauma risk factors may be easier to capture; however, mothers and fathers differ in the extent to which they report, and agree on, internalizing versus externalizing behaviors in their child. The present study examined the differential utility of matern

Behavioral sleep medicine-The need for harmonization of clinical best practice outcome measures in children and adolescents with intellectual or developmental disabilities and restless sleep.

In behavioral medicine, sleep disorders, insomnia in particular, may be considered comorbidities and precipitating factors to intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). Nevertheless, sleep alterations have often been neglected in favor of daytime features and symptoms, albeit simple behavioral nighttime observations may disclose hypermotor features that characterize restless sleep. The root of most hypermotor restlessness is linked to central iron deficiency. The latter is often exacerbated by vitamin D deficiency (VDD), which interferes with both dopaminergic and serotonergic mechanism

INTRAPERSONAL FACTORS AFFECTING CONCUSSION REPORTING BEHAVIORS ACCORDING TO THE THEORY OF PLANNED BEHAVIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYERS.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of a sports-related concussion (SRC) relies heavily on self-report from the athlete; therefore, the true percentage of those sustaining an SRC is not readily known. Concussed athletes are at higher risk for permanent or more catastrophic injury, especially without a diagnosis. Limited research has been done to determine the factors associated with concussion reporting behaviors in high school athletes. PURPOSE: To determine the intrapersonal factors affecting concussion reporting behavior in high school athletes based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). STUDY D

Which Techniques Are Used in Psychotherapeutic Interventions for Nonparaphilic Hypersexual Behavior?

INTRODUCTION: Attempts to draw a distinction between excessive and so-called normal sexual behavior are discussed controversially. Although no consensus has been reached so far on how to label the phenomenon of clinical relevant excessive sexual behavior, Kafka proposed the term hypersexual disorder. There are only a few empirical studies on the effectiveness of treatment. In the recent systematic review by Hook and colleagues, the total number of subject-related studies amounts to only 14 studies. However, it might be difficult for mental health professionals to fully comprehend the intervent

Music therapy as a complementary form of therapy for mental disorders.

AIM: Music therapy is an important complement to the non-pharmacological methods used in the treatment of psychiatric and behavioral disorders. The paper discusses the mutual similarities between psychotherapy and music therapy, indicating the importance of transference, countertransference, resistance and contract in both methods. The differences in the tools used in these two treatment methods have been highlighted. The controversy associated with the process of educating music therapists and psychotherapist in Poland has also been discussed. The paper also reviews the latest research works

Early postnatal treatment with clomipramine induces female sexual behavior and estrous cycle impairment.

Administration of clomipramine (CMI), a tricyclic antidepressant, in early stages of development in rats, is considered an animal model for the study of depression. This pharmacological manipulation has induced behavioral and physiological alterations, i.e., less pleasure-seeking behaviors, despair, hyperactivity, cognitive dysfunction, alterations in neurotransmitter systems and in HPA axis. These abnormalities in adult male rats are similar to the symptoms observed in major depressive disorders. One of the main pleasure-seeking behaviors affected in male rats treated with CMI is sexual behav
